I screwed up my install; game is crashing when I try loading a save. I have a backup of my SSE folder from 4 days ago when the game loaded just fine. I replaced the entire folder with my backup then opened Vortex.

I manually uninstalled all the mod I had installed from the old screwed up folder so that my SSE folder within Steam would match what Vortex has installed. I hit Deploy and I see the pop-up asking about which changes I would like to save. I choose SAVE ALL CHANGES and then confirm.

I've let Vortex sit for over 3 hours waiting for progress but I can't tell if anything is happening.

How can I fix this?

Version 0.18.9

Most straight forward way is:

Click Purge in Vortex. That removes any hard links in the game directory.

For each mod you show as Enabled, click the drop down that says Reinstall. That cleans up the mess you made by merging changes back into the staging folder.

Stop Vortex - so you don't worry about it.

Clean up your Game directory. Delete anything not installed by Bethesda. Probably includes the Textures, Meshes, and Scripts folders.

Run Steam Verify. That restores anything you were too exuberant in deleting.

Run your game. Verify vanilla is OK.

Install SKSE64 manually. Follow directions.

Run your game from skse64_loader.exe. Make sure it runs.

Start Vortex.

Click Deploy. You should be good to go.

Probably should've PURGED, then restored the old folder.

So you're saying Vortex can't handle recognizing there actually is no change? There's no point in using this program anymore.

No, what I'm saying is what you did screwed Vortex up, because there was a TON of changes, because you restored an old backup of your mod folder, and you're forcing it to do something even NMM couldn't do.

But, feel free to go back to NMM, just click on the INSTALL VORTEX button and scroll down the page until you get to the area where you can download the github version of NMM
