GunNutMerc
I'm talking about the maximum frames per second the game can run stable with without any physics breaking and such. Most common I've heard in other threads is the usual 60 frames. Others even said up to 62-63 frames because the engine limits it there (not sure if true). Only a few have said that around 80ish is fine which I'm the most curious about. Stutter Remover even comes with a Frame limiter that allows you to run the game up to 84/85 frames per second. With that, what is the definite FPS limit? Edited June 25, 2019 by Spooderdude
dubiousintent
There isn't a single number that is the "definite FPS limit" all systems are capable of achieving. It is highly dependent upon the combination of graphics card GPU, bus speed and bandwidth, buffer size, VRAM, and system video pipeline combination (including the monitor limitations). But the game itself was designed around a maximum of 60FPS. It can run at a higher rate (even over 100 FPS has been reported), but you can run into unintended consequences. You might want to read a primer on FPS before bashing your head trying to squeeze out the very last frame per second you can. Higher numbers do not automatically equal better performance nor even a normal visual difference. -Dubious-
Radioactivelad
You can technically play the game with appropriate physics at any arbitrary framerate; it's all dependent on the value of the Fmaxtime setting. The problem is your fps dropping will cause the game to slow down. This is a well known behavior of the game, but it's significantly more relevant at 60+ framerates (and concequently lower fmaxtimes), which are drastically more variable han 60- rates. (Which for a Beth-Gamebryo game, is saying a lot.) There is slowdown during any drop in fps, but the slowdown from -30fps is a lot more noticable than the slowdown of -10 fps.In fact, if we're defining a "Stable Framerate" as one you will under no circumstances drop below; 60 fps just barely cuts it. I have an 4790k @ 4.4 and a 1070ti, and my purely vanilla/dlc worst-case scenario is 50fps It can also theoretically cause bugs with the games scripting. (Granted in my longterm testing that was never a tangible issue.) If you just want to play some mods and aren't worried about long-term stability or the potential slowdown issues, I'd say 90fps should be pretty doable (Set Fmaxtime to 0.0111). For a full playthrough of the game, I'd say it's not worth the potential hassle. Edited June 26, 2019 by Radioactivelad
JimboUK
I would keep it locked at 60, odd things can happen above that, get up to 100 and above and the player character starts running visibly faster and looks quite comical. You'll also get a more consistent experience, the frame rate jumping around between 40 and 60 is bearable, it jumping around between 40 and 140 not so much. CursingNash19
Playing this game at 165fps is unbearable. I'm gonna try to find a mod to cap it at because frankly. I don't want to be Sonic the crack snorting hedge hog.
dubiousintent
There are several places where you can set the frame rate to a maximum cap level such as 60FPS. If you are using the "FNV Tick Fix" mod, it has settings, as does the base game INI files. However, you only want to set the frame rate in one place or you will get problems from competing settings that can be a major problem tracking down. -Dubious-
