scottym23 Posted September 6, 2012 Share Posted September 6, 2012 The title pretty much says it all. This question was sparked by me seeing a commercial for the show Long Island Medium. My belief is that she's fake along with every other medium. The sad part is there's no way to prove it because mediums usually say beforehand something along the lines of I can't interpret what i'm seeing so you have to. In other words it's basically like saying just grasp at straws with whatever she says that has any general correlation to something in your life and run with it. I'm going to ask them to provide some substantial evidence to support this extraordinary claim. Otherwise I cannot find a reason to believe them. The medium however would probably make up an excuse that someone you knew who was that same name died and she was talking to him or her by accident. They're usually quite good at coming up with bulls*** excuses on the spot, probably because when your profession is based on lies you need to have really good excuses for everything :P. The harsh reality is that if ANYONE actually possessed some sort of ESP or unique ability, they would likely be taken in by their government and forced into service or dissection. If someone really could get a reading from talking to the dead, they could obtain a ridiculous amount of sensitive data just by walking around a room filled with foreign dignitaries. The US and Soviet government were playing around with these sorts of things back in the 50s-70s, and almost all of their experiments failed completely. There is also a fairly large prize up for grabs by the Skeptics Society that is open to anyone who will agree to subjective testing of any psychic ability. Most "psychics" have refused this test outright. Everyone who has taken it has failed. While neither are conclusive proof that there aren't people with some sort of special ability out there, given the above those with such an ability would not be showcasing it in a public setting, or signing a TV contract for a small amount of money when a greater amount of money is just sitting on the table. People have always believed in this sort of thing because they WANT to believe it. They WANT to have this feeling that their loved ones are still around in some form, and still have a connection with their lives. The problem is that you have a collection of douche bags running around using scam techniques to try and "ease" the suffering of those who can't let go of people who have died. You have people who fully believe that they are doing a GOOD thing by twisting and distorting memories and giving baseless hope. In an age where audiences are pre-screened, deaths are dutifully recorded, and microphones and earpieces can be made virtually invisible, the scam artist doesn't even have to be good at doing a cold read, they just need to have a crew in back feeding them information.
