So I am new to modding and wanted to mod my skyrim. I downloaded Vortex and as soon as i boot it up it says there is an antivirus problem stopping Vortex from accessing vortex_canary.tmp I have tried giving it permission as it asks and that doesnt work. I then went and did the controlled folder access as i only have windows defender on my pc. After i allowed access to the Vortex.exe the error is still the same. Ive went and tried to locate the vortex_canary.tmp in the location it stated and i cant even see it there. Just wondering if anyone knows the fix to this or if this is a unique problem.

We are going to need more information, so you may as well start here:

Especially, what version of Windows is this, and did you use the Vortex custom installer? Did the Vortex install complete successfully?

If the installer itself did not complete, run the installer as Administrator. Do not run Vortex as Administrator though.

Did you shut off the Ransomware option in Defender?

Yea, that's the Ransomware option.

Do you have it OFF?

Yea i have it off. Ive tried with it both on and off cause i saw some things saying that may be the problem but nothing changed for me. Does anyone know what the vortex_canary.tmp is? cause i have no idea and i dont think i have that file anywhere

Did you ,as rmm200 suggested, run the Vortex Installer as Administrator?

  • 3 months later...

So I want to bring this to light here. I am having the same issue as stated by op. I am unsure of what is causing it to happen, but I cannot use Vortex at all even with following all the steps provided here. There is a Vortex_canary.tmp file causing this issue to occur, and I have gone through the steps in addressing the situation with Controlled Folder Access through Windows Defender, and the Anti-Virus is still refusing to accept the changes. I have made the changes and closed Vortex, then re-opened only to come back to the error being displayed again. I have tried to uninstall and reinstall multiple times, and still this persists. UAC is active, and it doesn't provide the permission to whatever it is. This is all happening while on the November update for Windows 10.

All I am going to at this point is revert back to the previous version of Windows 10, as I have now lost my F4 saves and beyond agitated with this Windows "update."

If this has been addressed elsewhere, I may have overlooked the forums while trying to find something to getting things back to normal, and I apologize. However, right now I am done with this update for Win10... again...
