Gawin
I have played Skyrim for a long time now but I have only recently heard of this bloated save problem, where save files become very large and the game will freeze so much that it becomes unplayable. Luckily I am at level 61 and the game runs fine except for some very occasional CTDs and freezing, which I believe is normal for most gmaes. However, this does concern me a little. I did some Google searches and found that some people bloat at around 20 meg and some other at larger sizes. I also found that someone claimed his save file shot up over 100 meg! I took a look at my own savegames and my most recent ones are at around 12 meg. I decided to monitor the file size for a few days and found that the size increases and decreases over time but the general trend is increasing. The size increase is about 100kb every 6 hours of gameplay. Is the steady increase in file size normal? Edited September 18, 2012 by Gawin
Brandy1123
It is normal, as the data it stores continues to be specific to that game load. Note that when you add and remove mods, that data, although is removed, still has remnants pitted throughout your save file. Also, poorly written mods can leave orphan bits of coded scripts and other fun little things inside the game save. When your game is between 12M and 15M in size, just monitor it. If it starts to jump into the 20's, the only help is to start a new game. Some of the mods, like the wwonderful sounds of skyrim series, ended up having issues after a game patch. Some mods are dependant on things Bethesda changes in upgrades or DLC's. A good mod today might not play so nicely tomorrow of after you load a few incompatible mods. You mod load order is a huge issue. a lot of gme problems can be solved by understanding what a mod does , what it changes, and how much support it gains from its creator. The larger the mod you load and the more mods you load will affect your gave save size. I hope this helps somewhat.
Gawin
Uh oh, I did install (but uninstalled later) Sounds of Skyrim at some stage but it didn't seem to have caused much problems. But in any case I guess I should just be content the game works fine at the moment. I better finish Dawnguard before anything bad happens lol. Thanks by the way. Brandy1123
The best thing to do, is as you stated. Just keep your eye on your save game size and if youget to an area where you start to CTD predictably, just avoid it. Most places in the wilderness are just superficial and have no bearing on the game world. When you do decide to start a new game, remove the mods you no longer like or require. After your next start, remember bits of the removed mods could be there and start to build up again. Start the game fresh and clean with what you now know are ones that make your game enjoyable to you.
SFBryan18
Worst case scenario... You delete what causes it and start a new game. Best thing to do is just be safe about trying new mods. If they seem shady, don't trust them. Check the comments for a little while after you start using them, and always have a backup, just in case. When I found out about SoS, I started over right away. I can't stand bugs. I spend too much time making my character perfect to ignore them. One rule I play by, which is strict and not necessary but definitely helps, is to only use mods that I plan to keep for good. Removing esps/esms can be very bad for your data, depending on their function. Anyways, that's just me.
Gawin
Thanks for all the advice, people! I just checked back and turns out the old version of SoS was okay. It was the update(s) that caused glitches. I was lucky that I am too lazy to update mods/patch for most of the time and I never got the update. And yea I stopped downloading mods that come straight out the oven, read comments first and wait a while for the author to fix any bugs. By the way, does hoarding stuff in houses increase the file size much? I have a bad habit of doing that lol.
clipfox
I had that problem. My savegames were growing by megs each time I'd save, and I was up to more than 120MB savegame files before I figured out what happened in my case. I installed a mod in which I didn't read the description carefully, and the mod just kept spawning more and more NPCs which was causing the bloat. When I disabled the mod, my savegames returned to about 10-12 megs each. More NPCs mod was the culprit:http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/19892 Edited September 20, 2012 by clipfox
