"Access error" on startup every time.

Hello.

I recently removed some old hard drives and installed new ones. In the process, a drive formerly known as J: where my old steam installation was kept was removed.

Every time Vortex starts, it gives me an error that this drive is not available, and therefore cannot load New Vegas or Neverwinter Nights. NOTHING in vortex leads to that location any more. I have tried to reinstall vortex, but the errors persist every time I open it.

These two games are obviously not installed, nor is there a J: drive any more for vortex to find them in. I have set the game directory under settings to my new steam installation, but it has not helped the errors in any way, every quick-scan brings the errors up again. I have also deleted the vortex folder in the %appdata% directory, the errors still persist. Evidently removing a drive with games installed on it is something vortex simply cannot handle.

The pop-up errors say to "not contact anyone because it is a user issue", but I am forced to regardless as I have exhausted my options short of just not using vortex period. I simply cannot understand why this is even an issue.

Here's hoping someone can shed some light on how to remove these errors.

Because you moved the entire hard drive without Vortex knowing it, and it's trying to find it again.

Any other shortcuts and/or start menu links you have that links to any program on J also does not work now.

Stop blaming Vortex for something YOU did.

This is like the 5th thread asking for help because somebody moved or removed something OUTSIDE of Vortex and then blamed vortex.

If Vortex opens, and you can get into the Interface, simply go to SETTINGS---->GAMES and remove the Drive from Vortex,by clicking the symbol for Flat Head Screwdriver

to remove the drive from possible searches. (ignore the thing I drew a box around)

Vortex-Game-Search.jpg

Then...go to GAMES------>MANAGED, click on the plus sign on each games, click MANUALLY SET LOCATION, and navigate to where your game is currently located.

You cannot blame Vortex for something you changed without Vortex knowing about it, all it's trying to do is it's job, and going by the information it last had before you changed everything

I can and will blame Vortex, because this should clearly not be happening regardless of what I do with my drives. I cannot be responsible for what I can only interpret as a coding issue. Something like this should have been anticipated. So please can the condescending attitude.

When I went to settings, the drive I once used was NOT on the list. The list was, in fact, empty. As there were no directories listed, I added the steam folder on my new drive.

Then I went to games, and the managed section is empty. I cannot make any changes to either of the two games it complains about, as they are not installed and the drive on which they were placed no longer accessible.

I would very much like to follow your guide, but I cannot because it does not apply to the current situation. Which is why I am asking for some insight in what to do about it.

All I want is for vortex to stop trying to access drives that do not exist, but despite having looked up everything that seemed even remotely relevant I still cannot find any way to stop it from doing so.

If it is possible to do a complete and clean reinstall of vortex and ALL associated files to make it forget about non-existent directories, I would be very happy for any directions.

I will offer you the help you desire as long as you keep things cool here.

We are benevolent to give our time to assist.

First . you need a better understanding of what you need to do to accomplish the tasks required DUE to what you have gotten your self into.

Windows and the uninstaller lack ---both lack complete removal characteristics to remove data completely.

  1. https://www.revouninstaller.com/revo-uninstaller-free-download/

install the free version and then locate Vortex, uninstall it, during the uninstall process, choose advanced so it cleans up all of the left over junk.

Junk because clearly it's not helping you currently.

Next.

  1. https://www.ccleaner.com/ccleaner/download

Get the pro. run int several times , windows has a bad habit of locking things in place due to usage, but after several passes it goes bye bye.

Reboot and re-run CCleaner again to make sure there are zero entries to vortex.

now close the program and download a fresh copy of the manager program if you so choose.

you install this program carefully to what ever drive it allows you to install it too.

Please take your time. at any point you see any opportunity to make changes it allows you to, take advantage of it.

Select the drive, once installed, Follow the guides here on the nexus as directed.

If your satisfied. reply.

Never mind...

Um, this program "cleaner" has the only clean registry cleaner available that actually works.

No body needs to keep the programs installed either, but a user needs tools t do a job that is friendly and accessible .

There are other things too I could recommend as well using the OS but then I would be teaching people how to use windows tricks and that is a complete waste of time on all parties involved.

tell me ? what do you know that's bad about a simple app that does a good job in this situation?

I use the portable paid for program and I use on out others systems to clean up big fat messes that otherwise would force a user t reinstall the OS.

My methods are known to be very good and have no failures. I also offer remote assistance too on discord.

Keep in mind, I have E-mail and it shows me notices of things I follow here.

I try as hard as I can to keep track of all those I intend to help here.

My profile signature holds a host of all the correct gaming methods and links to tools used in gaming.

Any thing I recommend is not permanent.

It's fast , clean, quick and efficient.

As I said before

Never mind

Ok, no problem. I am aware there is a mod also called by this name.

we Just need to help others get an answer to an issue that helps them in the best way possible.

There are so many ways people use programs that are just crazy ! Unbelievable setups can be seen as incredible.

Expectations of software are not always what they may seem to be.

This should fix the problem in this situation so we can do other things.
