Using New Version of File Problem

So, I am working on a mod. Made a few things to test, saved the file, did NOT swap Vortex Game Profiles.

Load up the game, tested a few things, worked fine. exited the game. shut down vortex, did more work on the file. Saved the file again. Loaded CK again to make sure it had saved, it did, everything was there.

Opened Vortex, swapped to my test profile, incase something went awry, and remembering I had forgotten to the previous time. It detected there was a new version of the file I had worked on and saved, of course, and asked if I wanted to use the new version. I clicked OK, enabled the plugin file, as Vortex disables it by default when the file changes.

Loaded up the game, none of my work was there. Exited the game, shut down Vortex, loaded up Creation Kit, loaded the plugin, the 327 recipes I had made for the new skill line I am working on, were nowhere to be found.

WHY is Vortex overwriting the new file, with an old one, but saying its using the new version???

That just cost me a day of work, and seems like a pretty sloppy oversight on the back-end.

You should be backing up your work before relying on a mod manager to back it up for you.

I know that when I update an esp with Xedit or the CK, I don't write it to the Data Folder without backing it up first.

I am not relying on Vortex to back up anything. However the fact that it edits/overwrites discretely is a problem, it shouldnt be doing that.

Also, unless it is a brand new plugin, CK doesnt allow you to write it to anywhere else as it will ONLY read from the data folder, and will ONLY save to the data folder unless its a brand new plugin, this giving the ability to save elsewhere.

It only does that if you tell it to.

As I said, When working on a mod or esp where I make hundreds of edits, I always backup my work.

If you had backed it up, you could've easily just said "Whoops, picked the wrong option" and restored the backed up file.

I mean, it sucks that it happened, but always backup your work first.

I can't tell how many times I've made hundreds of Edits in Xedit, hit the X to exit, then get the dreaded message that Xedit couldn't write the files to disk

That isnt the issue. It asked me if I wanted to use the new version of the file. I said yes. So it should have used the new one, and it didnt.

Whether I backed it up or not, doesnt change the fact that that particular thing, is a problem.

Hmmm, I wonder if the Revert and Use Newer got reversed, because a couple of days ago, I had an easy change I did in Xedit, I saved the updated ESP to the data folder as usual, along with the BACKUP checkbox ticked.

When I loaded it up in Xedit again, the changes were gone, so I restored the backup, and then Vortex asked about the changed file, and I told it to Revert, and then loaded it up in Xedit again, and the changes were there.

Try doing that for the sake of experimentation.

Either with the CK or Xedit, make a couple of simple changes to an esp that would be super obvious, and only take a minute or so.

Then save it, (copy it somewhere else too) then load up Vortex and when it asks to use NEWER say YES, then check the ESP and see if your change is there.

Then copy the copy over, and when Vortex notices the change, tell it to Revert, and see if the change is in the ESP

Because now I'm getting worried because I just made changes to several ESPs while I was waiting for a response, and I know the Use Newer, Save Changes, Revert is going to pop up soon

For sure Ill take a deeper look, and yeah keep an eye out incase its some odd bug or something. Ive never had it happen before today, so not sure whats going on =/

Also going to see if it has anything to do with swapping game profiles in Vortex. I have a sneaking suspiscion it has something to do with the way Vortex manages profiles and save-states.

Update:

It has EVERYTHING to do with how Vortex manages profiles and the games save-states.

I made a simple change, moved a copy to desktop. Loaded the profile it was on, worked fine.

Swapped profiles, it asked me if I wanted to use the new file, clicked yes. Loaded the game, it reverted the file to the old version on the loaded profile.

So it is over-writing the changed file, with the version on the loaded profile, even though its not actually new. Its very very odd.

It shouldnt be over-writing with a past-dated file, and it shouldnt be housing multiple file copies between profiles...

There are a lot of things that can go wrong there and losing work isnt even the worst of it, Devs need to take alook into that.

To continue, told it NOT to update, didnt matter. Still reverted to the older file version.

Ok so

1. changed file in one profile, the "Use newer file" worked

2. change profiles, the "use newer file" restored the OLD file instead

Did you then switch BACK to the other profile and check if the changes were still in the newer profile, or did Vortex restore the OLD one for BOTH profiles?

I did change back to the previous profile, and it had restored the OLD file. =/
