I am an idiot...

Hello,

If anyone would, I would really appreciate your help with a quest I am trying to mod using TES.

I am trying to alter the 'Purification' quest, which is Dark10Sanctuary.

I have made a book which I want delivered to the player after he visits Lucian and is told he is to complete the purification. I want it delivered when he returns to the Cheydinhal Sanctuary to begin the purification. I would like it to trigger when he enters the Sanctuary and then activate so he reads it. A message about delivery would be nice too.

Then, all he does is go back and the quest will complete.

For some reason, I can't get it to work! I have used Getincell and it never triggers when he goes back to Cheydinhal.

I have added to the Dark10Sanctuary script and uploaded the mod to RapidShare.

Thank you very much for any help on this. It should be really simple but I just cant get it to work!!

There are a couple of things I'd like to say

first, referring to yourself as an idiot is a terrible habit to get into, repeat it enough and you will start to believe it. Using that as a name for your thread tells any serious modder not to bother reading your thread.

second, I think you will need to rework the quest in order to get that to work. With patience you will get a response to your question. I would love to see you accomplish this because killing everyone in the sanctuary is my least favorite part of the DB quest. It would be nice to finish the quest and still have all the dark brotherhood members in the sanctuary. Anyone who can come up with the idea and start modding it isn't my idea of an idiot.

good luck with this mod and my apologies for not being able to offer more advice but I am learning scripting and quest writing myself.

Hi Bosphorus670.

There is wisdom in exanimis words, and I make them mine too and like him I mean no offense and just pass ahead forum's experiences. This one, for instance, could have the topic title something like: Need help trying to change the Dark Brotherhood quest. Although not going directly to the point is likely to get attention from skilled quest modders.

Changes in existing cells may be dangerous and may affect someone game even if the mod is just open in CS and never actually played (most like myself keep the default autosave feature). Reason some people are cautious about getting unknown esp known to change vanilla cells and quests and to be not functional.

Albeit you didn't say it explicitly seems some NPC will have such book and walk toward the player and give it to him/her. I would do it before the player actually enters the sanctuary unless said NPC is one of the fellows or have a plausible reason to wander it. Another thing you may want to verify is the getdistance. Remember gamers may do 'unexpected' things, like leaving the scene before it completing and the NPC would chase the PC for all cyrodiil, not a bad thing itself, just more complexity.

For the Getincell not working I can think the quest stage isn't activated, but may be just something else not working too, so... The better to track down such issues is using the printtoconsole script function and place meaningful messages at strategic points to at least show they were reached. You may want to type the getstage command from the console into the actual game to verify things are as expected (using PrintC implies using OBSE and if you don't want the mod being OBSE dependent all references to it must be erased before the final release, yet this function is a so powerful debugging tool which compensates the extra work).

The procedures above may be enough to give you some lights about what is going wrong.

Come again when having more specifics you can point and say: this or that feature isn't working. As it is, really the only way would be downloading the whole mod and actually 'making' it for you.

PS: Whenever scripts become large may be good idea copying them on more powerful text editors like the excellent Notepad++ (not to be confused with the poor MS notepad). This wonderful editor can be download even from here, the nexus, already with the Oblivion (and even OBSE) CS script language feature. The CS editor is so much limited. Blessed be the Free Software community
