Why do people like companions?

I just do not understand companions and by extension companion mods... I am not trying to troll here.. I would like serious answers...

Why would anyone ever want a companion in Skyrim? My experience of them is that they get in the way, charge in and agro stuff, break immersion and generally greatly reduce my enjoyment of the game. I've tried a few of the "top companion" mods, but I seriously do not get it. I mean what do people like about companions, and why would you ever use one?

Also the mods. There are so many, is it just cause companions are easy to make.. autonomous (kinda) objects you can place in the game that require only a single mesh base then is is all coding, rather than a massive dungeon and wot not? is that why there are so many companion mods... cause it is a achievable goal for a single or 2 man team?

I just seriously am at a loss here.. I feel like I am missing out on some aspect of the game.. btu I just can nto for the life of me see any merit in companions.

There doesnt seem to be much utilization for them in skyrim compared to other games. I use a follower to make the big battles effortless and have something easy on the eyes.

In fallout 3 and new vegas, followers were vital to carrying all the crap you would find throughout the wasteland. Money (caps) were a lot harder to come by in the fallouts than the elder scrolls so you had to pillage and sell everything you found. Having a follower doubled your carrying capacity, which in the fallouts, was limited.

Skyrim, not so much.

I use Atvir Dres. He is the only companion I will use unless I'm forced to use another by the game. He does not have idiotic AI, his banter amuses me, and I tend to feel a bit lonely when I'm adventuring without him. He is a tad bit overpowered, but cranking up the difficulty is enough to remedy this.

He will charge things, but only when my character has been detected. He has light foot, so he doesn't set off all the traps. He has a relax mode, and can have his home set anywhere, as well as a few hangout locations. He does not require any other mods to work. I don't use him as a pack mule unless I'm desperate and really have a need to be carrying 300 lbs of ore.

With dungeon and quest mods.. unless the rewards are really nice (while not being god objects), I tend to just play through it once, then uninstall. The esp based mods that I keep generally have some effect on gameplay, either adding things to it, or removing annoyances. Frankly, I don't see a dungeon mod as really being a significant 'gameplay addition'. Woohoo, you cleared this dungeon. Yay? Unless it grants me a new thing I can use every day afterwords, I don't even care.

My first 10 or so playthroughs were solo (except for when I had to escort Farkas or Vilkas, or Esbern, or Delphine somewhere, and yes, they were annoying to deal with). I don't see the point in adding more companions that use that exact same system, same voices, ect while 'looking prettier', but for companions that actually have a new voice and personality, there is definitely a point, and they add far more enjoyment to the game than a new dungeon would. That's just my two cents.

lets see.

Companions will steel your kill, taking your experience away.

The will kill friendlies, making sure you get a bounty.

if you are in sneak, they will make sure you get detected.

so why not have one :P

They do look nice, and it is fun sometmes to watch them kick some serious behinds.

Companions that are awesome in combat and look good, Calypso, Tauriel, Jordis (give her the Giants mace and have some laughs).

Frankly I agree with you. I have no idea. As I mentioned somewhere else, it's a single-player game. If I wanted help, I'd get into MMOs or something.

Companions and followers have always been a nuisance to me. Actually, l find they break immersion for me, because they don't really interact properly with the world. When Lydia saw me enjoying Namira's feast and didn't care I knew I didn't want them anymore. Maybe mod followers who actually have real personalities are better...

I use if for RPGs feels sake. Making them mortal also enhance the games difiiculty and tactical aproach especially because I use SSS :D But you're right a companion is not a wonderous fighter on his own but i even prefer this.

//Btw: I often prefer to let them stay at the beginning of a dungeon.

Not tested it myself but there are companion who will not break your sneak.

Followers, I used to use 'em cause I thought it was required after all Lydia is given to you. But after killing her and others time and time again just cause they took my arrow in their arse. I decided not to use them. But I leveled faster as a result and so I have to use the Uncapper mod to slow things back down. I took care of the "mule aspect" by using a bag of holding (and then making my own). I have no reason to use them now. Maybe if I played the game on the hardest settings and had all those mods which add tons of enemies, then UFO with lots of followers would make sense. But the standard game doesn't really need them.

I have no use for them either. Serana is competent but she was useless for my stealthy style until I got the Stealthy Serana mod.

Maybe some people like to be followed around by a gaggle of good looking gals or guys? Eyecandy reasons?

yeah i play a stealth character as well and the followers are completely terrible.. even with mods to make them invis when you crouch.. it still just looks stupid with them crouching in full view and not being seen.. and if you get scene they go agro on everything and all your tricks to loose aggro are meaningless.

As for carrying capacity.. i really like "Midas Summon Walking Luggage".. I like the middas spells as you need to work for them by getting ingredients.. you can not just buy them... so it doesn't feel like it is breaking the game. Most spell collections have OP stuff in them.. you just need to use self control to not use the game breakers.

I dunno.. i'm gald I am hearing this... most posts seam to echo my thoughts as well... so why are there so many mods that add more?
