WrathOfDeadguy
The conditions- I entered the Republic of Dave after taking on "You Gotta Shoot 'em in the Head" from Mr. Crowley. Exhausted conversation options with Dave, which resulted in me being banished (I didn't have a high enough speech and failed a skill check). Went back in, begged forgiveness (and parted with 250 more caps), and offered to help with the election. I convinced both Bob and Dave's older wife (forgot her name) to run for office, then rigged the election so that the wife won. Afterwards, Dave left town (as expected) and I followed him to pickpocket his key. As soon as that was done, I went back to speak with the wife, who told me I could have 'Ol Painless. The safe unlocked, but it remained "owned"- when I took the rifle from the safe, the very same lady who had not fifteen seconds earlier (I waited to see if she'd walk over and open it) had told me "help yourself, it's all yours" saunters over, snatches the gun from my hands, and pegs me with a karma penalty for stealing. I reloaded and tried again; same result. Another reload, this time using the wait function for several hours- same. I ended up just spawning myself a fresh copy of the rifle through the console, not wanting to kill the silly woman and eat bad karma for the murder and the theft, since she absolutely refused to leave the room (yes, even to go to bed). I've moved on to other quests now, but it was still somewhat annoying. Did I screw a trigger somewhere, or is this a known issue?
FutureVisions
Im also havin a bug in the republic of dave. Basically i talked to every one after i accepted to help with the election. I also convinced dave's wife to run for office, (didnt manage to convince bob). The problem is now, both Bob and the museum girl (Shawna i think), are stuck in front of the voting booth. I've already passed several in-game days and they just wont leave their positions and wont vote (when i talk to dave, he just says the election is still going).Anyway when i went there the other day to check if the situation had changed i saw that, for some unknown reason, there was new dialogue available with the museum girl (cant remember exactly what is was, but didnt seem imporant anyway), but even after i had that new talk with her, everything stayed the same. I had a similar bug in a quest in Rivet City where the Doc wasnt showing me all the talk options he should (only found out it really was a bug when i went there there with another character -.-). Im thinking in all these cases the problem might be in the order u trigger the conversations. im gonna try some console commands to reset nps or conversation flags to see if its possible to solve these bugs if u dont have a previous save to go back to. P.S.: your problem might be the fact that u have the key for the trunk with you. if she's offering u the rifle u can probly open the trunk without the key. but if u have the key in your inv, the game may assume u are opening the trunk with it, and make the npc think your stealing since the trunk is still "tagged" as owned. so she reacts to the stealing like all other npc's. macmert
How do you rig the elections? I tried but the vote box is locked and it can not be opened, it says is requires a key... Where did you find the key for that? Dave didnt have it on him... I would be glad if you tell me how to rig the election... I managed to have the lady run for election, also bob... If you tell bob that he is too young to run for election, he gets mad and decides to run for election :)
FutureVisions
I solved my bug. Reset all dialogue flags (rdf in console), kill bob, kill shawna, resurrect shawna (let her vote), resurrect bob. @macmert dunno haven't rigged it either. if u guys just want the rifle u can simply pickpocket Dave and raid his safe when no one's looking :P (thats what i did)
mikekearn
You rig the election by stealing the votes right as Dave opens the vote box. It's flagged red as stealing, but nothing happens and you can take the others' votes right out of the box in front of them. The only problem is you have to be quick on the timing to get it to work, since it's only a split second after Dave opens the box and before her starts reading votes. If there is another way to do it, I don't know what it is.
vashts1985
OP: it prolly had to do with you stealing the key off of dave. i do believe at the point she says "help yourself" she does give you a non stolen flagged key for the safe. maybe you did not get that key because you already had the flagged copy in your inventory.
