Asking me to upgrade for every single file downloaded ?

Let me see here. You all are complaining that you have to choose where to download from, as well as whether to remain a free user or become a premium one? It is really a choice you need to make for yourself, and not complain about. Either stay free, or become premium. Premium does have a few perks to it, like no ads, faster, and uncapped, downloads, and you are supporting not just the site, but also the mod authors. The money that the site generates on ads alone keeps the site running. You paying for a premium membership does a bit more. You could try elsewhere for some of the mods here, but I do know that a lot of other sites are either as "bad" or even worse than Nexus. So, the choice is yours, either put up with what's going on, and just keep doing things, or start paying for premium. I know which way I chose, and I have had no complaints about the speed, or ads. As to site design, well, let's just say I like the old Nexus layout better than the new. But hey, I'm not complaining, just stating what I like, and leaving it go at that.

Getting badgered to get premium every time I download a file as an extra added step when just yesterday all I had to do is click the mod manager button and be done with it, this is a problem. We get enough of out-of-touch morons thinking adding inconveniences to the user experience is a good idea in the gaming industry when it comes to DRM, we don't need more of the same on the modding scene. I was never going to get premium in the first place. But now, I'm not even going to give Nexus my BATs anymore.

Besides, this was clearly a rush job. The UI for this nonsense looks half-finished, it pops up even when it shouldn't and well... I'm not premium and just downloaded a file at 14 MB/s. Seriously, this is a train wreck, just change it back Nexus.

You assume that everyone has the financial means to afford that. Not everyone does. I went with Supporter for exactly that reason - I'm on a tight budget as it is, and cannot justify the expense.

Nexus staff,

I completely understand websites are exceedingly expensive to host and maintain.
I also am 100% for a premium per-month feature set that people choose to get to support the site (and the other available options to provide support.)
While annoying, I was fine with the odd banner the past little while reminding me of the download cap.
The way I see it, at the very least that can answer questions newer users may have concerning the speed.
I would also be alright with that banner mentioning premium. Still very mildly annoying, but I see no issue with it, and could fully support this change.
I also firmly believe I would get used to this after a while and not be bothered by it, same as the other changes to the website I've seen over the years.

However I am not, in any way, shape, or form fine with an obtrusive redirection that reminds the user with every single download that they're a free member.
More-so that this is quite intrusive, and you have to go through more steps to download multiple files.
Then there is the issue of how this information is presented.
As soon as I saw this, I felt like I was on a questionable file-hosting site.
To be honest, this shakes my trust in the Nexus staff due to this association.
I'm never comfortable with those sorts of sites, and with very few exceptions, I avoid them.
Now with this feature in place, I get the same uneasy feeling with each download.

Again, I understand you need money to run the website, and to pay your employees a salary.
Please though, reconsider this change.
I rather strongly feel that this is objectively in poor taste, and makes the site less user-friendly.
At the very least, if you must do this (and I certainly am fine with a better implementation), I feel it would be far better design to, for instance, utilize the existing prompt system to offer these same options/reminders.
Staying on the files tab, especially with some mods with close to, if not more than, 10 different files, is all-around more fluid for the end-user.
I also feel that the information presented should do its best not to associate with the aforementioned sites.

Bottom line, with the sort of resources you have at your disposable, I believe that this particular change could certainly be done in numerous different ways that makes the end-user more comfortable with the info presented.

In closing, I mean no disrespect with what I've said, so my apologies if it has seemed that way.
This change has just gone too far in my mind, and I would like to have my voice be heard.

Thank you, Nexus staff, for maintaining this website.
There are quite a few reasons The Nexus has become the go-to place for sharing mods.
I only wish that you'll reconsider the implementation of this feature.

With respect,
-Matthios

PS: To the forum members that read this, please don't say anything something similar to if I can afford internet, I can afford premium.
That makes little sense as this is an additional cost, and not rolled into and covered by my internet bill (as I've seen some argue in other posts.)
Furthermore, I am unable to support The Nexus on a per-month basis due to a very tight financial situation (IE most months I have difficulty having enough money, after bills, for groceries.)
That being said, I have no issue making future one-time donations when I have money that needs to go nowhere else.
I don't expect any of this for free, so please don't assume that, and given a more lenient financial situation, I would certainly be investing in premium, and the site.
That is certainly reasonable and I feel that those who have that kind of money, and use the site often, should seriously consider some form of support.
I do, however, at least expect user-friendly design and implementation on a professional website (which I don't feel is at all unreasonable considering this is an expectation most have when going to a reputable site.)

Quite well said, Matthios. Kudos given!

SirTwist- Please allow me to play the referee here. And that's all that I'm doing. I totally GET where you are coming from, and I do not disagree with what you're saying. I'm not.

What I Will say tho, is that it IS different for the premium members, in the fact that some of you don't even know what the new screen looks like. So, you've never had to endure it. Not having had to deal with it, you don't know, yourself, the kinds of thoughts that go through your mind, when most of your screen gets taken over.

I'm not saying that, to accuse anybody, of anything. Only that it's very difficult for a person to understand what others are going thru, when they themselves don't ever experience it. EX: I can highly sympathize for somebody who is starving. I've never been that bad off, so I dont understand the full depth of it. EX: I have severe insomnia, and sometimes go for 36 hour or more periods of lack of sleep. People who haven't experienced that, don't understand that "Oh just take a pill and get some rest" doesn't work.

This is all I'm saying. Yes, some people ARE acting childish, in response to this change. Yes, some people ARE acting like spoiled children throwing tantrums. Yes, some people ARE saying that they're so ticked that they're not ever coming back, they're done with this and that.

Ok, the tantrums are both annoying, and comical. The crap being said about the site, and Robin, are not. And yes, a few of the people saying it, really don't contribute a lot. Or try to make themselves good, active members of the community around here. Some of them, quite the opposite.

But, the concern is real. Especially for those of us who really, really DO respect this site, and appreciate all of Robin's hard work, efforts, and hardships that are associate with owning this site.

The large majority of people that come here for the first time, aren't going to buy premium the first time they come here. But instead, they're going to be greeted with half (or more) of their screen that looks like a shareware or pirate fileshare site.

I've said it before, now I say it again. I believe in Robin. I have so much respect for all he does, and goes through, to make this happen, and keep it going. It's his business, it's his home. He can run it as he sees fit. He's done a great job of keeping the place going.

I simply don't agree with this new step. As you said, some changes, we just don't like.

This just makes downloading from Nexus feel like one of those dime-a-dozen file hosting sites. Making the site less user friendly does not incentivize premium membership, this is the wrong way to go about things.

Exactly. The in-your-face-buy-premium stuff made me un-whitelist the sight from my adblocker. So now, the site is getting zero revenue from me rather than some.

It's extremely gross. I think the thing I like the least about it is the feeling of detachment.

Like, whoever signed off on this decision must be pretty detached from the userbase to think that this is cool.

I'm in the boat with the users who turned adblock on for this site now.

This is ridiculous. It actually makes me want to get Premium less, and I doubt people are going to continue to disable their adblockers on the site.

You've been a member for 8 years, and still don't have premium, I doubt very much that you're ever planning on getting premium, and only say that when Nexus changes something you don't like.

and that bit i highlighted is exactly why this new page exists.

I think this will make me get premium, darn it! All they have to do is make the extra prompt be in a modal popup instead of a slow redirect to a new page. That would be much less annoying, and still get the job of selling more premium memberships done well enough.
