Over penetration?

Hey Everybody!

I'm sure that some of you have seen some of your VATS shots, where bullets from ballistic weapons will fire through the target, and impact into whatever is behind them. And granted, it's next to impossible tell, because of camera angle and how fast it all takes place.

But, does anybody know if that can happen outside of VATS?

I am very seriously wondering, if a shot could kill two birds with one stone, or in this case obviously....bullet. If the targets were lined up right, and the trajectory was good.

And/or has anybody seen a double kill from one shot, from a VATS shot? Due to bullet pass through, not explosive rounds, or anything like that.

Cheers!

In real life, without doubt it can happen. Even a .22 LR round can pass through a human body. I just watched a very demonstrative video of that the other day. Several layers of blanket, followed by a rack of pork ribs, followed by a watermelon, followed by another rack of ribs followed by more fabric...and each shot passed right through the whole shebang (and did quite a bit of damage to the ribs on both sides and melon along the way) Made me confident in the power of my personal protection, even if it's considered a pea shooter by the macho boys.

(the arrangement noted above was made to simulate a human body wearing a thick coat and garments)

Bump that up to a larger hunting or military grade round and I'd suggest that it'd be easy to kill two birds with one stone.

fwiw.

(I have no idea what VATS is, just saw this post in my forum feed)

Heyas Anjen! Thanks for the reply. VATS is an alternate aiming system in Fallout 4. Kinda like a computer assisted, aiming...if you will. It also plays injuries and fatalities in a cinematic slow-mo mode. So yeah, definitely talking about a shooter game ;)

IRL, I grew up on a farm, about 15 minutes outside of a lil town 30 minutes on the west side of nowhere. Ya know the kinds of places. Where every household has at least 3-8+ guns around the house. Every boy gets a BB gun about the same time they get rid of the training wheels on their bike, and has their hunting permit by the time they hit their teens.

Had a LOT of fun with those "pea shooters" along with various other calibers, and shotguns. Interesting fact, a .22 will shoot right through both sides of the bowl of a porcelain toilet. Bathtubs are NO defense at all against one, aside from obstruction of Line of Sight. A very fast, very small round, the .22.

Pretty sure that I've seen that one. It was impressive.

Tho admittedly, where a 22 gets the best results is if it gets through one side, and starts bouncing around inside ribs. That, well.... it's nasty.

Really odd tho, is possums. Opossum, some call them. Those little buggers can shrug off a .22 pretty easy. Even a light load from a 20 gauge. Both of those being body shots, of course. Tough, UGLY little turds, those things. Heh, and they really do play dead. And hang from their tails.

There's a tube on youtube where they were firing 380's through common household appliances. It's kinda surprising that a 380 from a subcompact with about a 3 inch barrel can shoot through a refrigerator.

Dammit, you're really making me regret moving to New Jersey at the moment (well, I regret it every day, but especially now, talking about guns!) The gun laws here are just.... well........ insane.

LOL Anyway, nuff nostalgia.

  • 4 weeks later...

Early this morning, I made up a new character, and started trudging my way down to Concord to try out a theory that my very sleepy brain concocted involving the settlers with Gravey.

(that's not a typo).

Just past the Red Rocket Station, I ended two giant mosquitoes having and (Ok, THAT was a typo!) afternoon snack on a dead brahmin.

With one shot.

As I said, I was tired, I was sleepy, and my mission was to test a theory. I come around the corner, and vats target them both. The one closest to me, then the one on the other side of the dead cow. Pull the trigger. Gun only fires once.

Wtf? Did I lag? Ammo counter shows 19 rounds. (20 round mag).

Vats again. No targets. Wtf?

I walk down, both bugs are dead.

*Big wolf grin*

So. Yeah. We actually CAN kill with over penetration in the game, if the line on the targets is right :D

I see that happen with ghouls outside of vats fairly regularly. I can't say for sure it is 'one shot, two kills' though, as most of my weapons are full auto, and firing just a single round is pretty rare. :) But, I HAVE dropped two ghouls standing in line with one short burst. I think when the first ghoul dies, their collision dies with them, so the second round simply passes right thru them.
