upgrading from old program to Vortex

Just wondering. I have Fallout 4 installed with a ton of mods, and I hadn't played it in years, but then I went to see the mods and got a notice to update to the new program Vortex. I did, but now, it doesn't show any of the mods I have installed on Fallout 4. What happens when I want to uninstall a mod, or one of the mods doesn't work with whatever version Fallout 4 is now? Am I assed out? Thanks for any info or help.

As you've not played the game in a while, there is a good chance that your mods are out of date. Some out of date mods won't play on new versions of the game, and it's a PITA to diagnose these and correct them. A new broom sweeps clean, or so they say. To that end, this is what I would do if I were you.

1. Go into your fallout 4 folder and delete the Data folder.

2. Have Steam verify local files and replace any it thinks are missing.

At this point, you have a brand new, unmodded fallout 4 game.

To make sure it works, fire it up. You should get the Fallout screen, it will check your graphics settings and the game starts. If you get this far, you're golden.

3. Install a mod, using Vortex. I would suggest the first mod you should pull down and install is the UFO4P unofficial fix patch. If you don't know how to install a mod using Vortex, there are a ton of resources in these forums and built in via the knowledge base. UFO4P is a painless mod to install.

4. If you install (and deploy) UFO4P, start Fallout 4 again, and make sure the game starts as you did above.

Then it''s simply a case of pulling down and installing the mods you want, and making sure your game starts. Takes a bit of time, but once you've installed a couple of mods with Vortex, it becomes very intuitive.

So then I am assed out...would have loved for it to have just recognized it, as the old app had it all. So you are telling me, I would have had to uninstall mods and maybe reinstall the game when Vortex showed up? kinda crappy...glad I got to it now, and not when it was changed to Vortex, cuz then I would have been really pissed...oh well...luckily it's the only game I had mods on, I can't imagine if I had a bunch of games...

you don't need to do any of that. you can just simply fire up your game and see how it goes.

my reply to your post was what i would do given that your mods are all probably out of date but you pays your money, and takes your chance.

If you already have a working modded setup, you can play it as-is, UNLESS you updated the game and use mods that use a script extender like SKSE, F4SE etc, then you'll need to update those AND the mods that rely on them.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

So, if you have hundreds of mods installed and want to play, DON'T TOUCH ANYTHING, just run it like you always have with whatever Mod Manager you were using at the time to install them.

The easiest transition, and happiest transition to Vortex, is by modding an unmoddded game, rather than trying to import an already heavily modded game.
