Luckily (or not?) the log is very short. I don't believe it is related to any of the mods really - because I did not change anything in my load order and it started to crash consistently with some things pointing to Creation Club (probably). I tried to disable mods which somehow appear in the log as there are only a few of them there but it changed nothing. I start the game with F4SE obviously and it is the older version game: 1.10.162 with F4SE 0.0.6.19 Any ideas on how to understand what causes the issue? Why is it just appeared out of nowhere when it was working perfectly fine just yesterday and I did not change even a single thing? (and I did not have CTD in a very long time - months or so?) Can any CreationClub update really break the game? EDIT: Woops, funny title. Whatever, it happens. UPDATE: Tried to update the game to 1.10.163 (+F4SE and all the mods that were necessary to update for it). No difference, still CTD in main menu after several seconds into the screen. StormWolf01 Posted February 1, 2020 Share Posted February 1, 2020 (edited) Heyas Dellacross.The short answer to the question in the title, is: Yes, very much so.There are two dangers from creation club content. 1) is that darn near every single one of them is scripted. And nearly every one of them starts the scripts as soon as the game starts up, after it's been activated. Why is that bad? Because A) This game doesn't handle scripts well, (which is why we have F4se) and it's been known to break them, with a long, long list of bugs, B) It means that once you start a game with the CC stuff active, you canNOT deactivate that plugin, without orphaning the scripts in it, because they bake into your save game.2) is that they are all esl files. ESL files don't count against your plugin limit, but they do have their own limit. It's just figured up differently and isn't totalled up by the actual number of plugins, but rather by the number of entries IN those plugins, all counted up and totalled together. The first thing I'd try, is to download and install this https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/42497It's very possible that the CC stuff that you have, was made for version .138 and isn't compatible with your newer version of the game. It's very possible that you've hit the esl limit. Cut and paste several of the esl files out of your data folder, deactivate them in whatever manager you're using, and see if the game will survive booting up. It's also possible that this is a prior issue that's been going on before, but just hasn't stacked up to the point of crashing. It could also be that those plugins aren't in your load order anymore, and the orphaned scripts are causing the crash. In summary, Butthesda really needs to do a better job of telling people that they need to be very careful with esl files.Oh wait. They don't care. They just wanna sell stuff. The crash happens in main menu (I can also try to load the game or start a new one - I have time for that since the CTD happens ~10-15 seconds after game start, but it does not matter if I do so - CTD is still there) I tried the version check patcher. Well in fact, I was running with it all along since that is needed due to 1.10.163 update behavior change. But just to be sure - I tried both with and without it. Same thing happens.I did not hit the esl limit for sure: how else was it working with the same mod list yesterday? Again, to be sure, I checked: nope, not even close to the limitNot sure what the "stacking" issue means. If that would be about a save file - yes, I do get the point. But the game crashes way before I even do any action (load game / start new game)Also not sure I get the point about orphaned scripts. If I did not change anything - what could make them to be orphaned? The way I was thinking CC content broke something for me is that they roll some news / updates to CC sometimes. But that's why I wasn't sure and asked - can it break anything for me if I never used anything from there, never logged in to there etc etc etc. Was trying to disable mods that are anyhow mentioned in the logs. Disabled 15 or so mods, no luck. At this point I guess it's probably something that log just does not show. An ultimate option maybe to try starting the game without any mods, but then it will never allow me to get what's wrong. You've got a mod that is trying to access creation club stuff, that you've never had. (Which is good for you, that CC stuff, strictly in my opinion, is just bad news).That however, doesn't make it any easier for you to track down, other than reviewing the mods that you've got, and checking on what they alter or what they require. The reason that I mentioned the esl limit was that there is an issue going on right now, where some of the mods are not loading active in the load order. The newer version of the game will literally skip over some mods that aren't compatible with the new version. My mind was thinking that it was possible that your game Had been doing that, and now is not. What I meant by stacking. That was bad wording on my part from being really tired. What I meant, is that a problem can start out, but start out small enough that it doesn't cause any game breaking problems. Then it just get worse, as time goes on. Until It snowballs (which is what I should have said) to the point that it does start to cause problems. But, my apologies, I didn't mean to confuse, there. :sad: Ok, I see what you are asking about, I think. You're talking about the notifier that pops up about the new releases, specials, freebies...basically the spam from bethesda. No, that doesn't actually make any changes to your computer. Its more like an advertisement more than anything else.I had thought that there was actually a mod that gets rid of the advert, but now I can't find it again :sad:It's basically a UI tweak, I think. You might also start checking at any mods that are just f4se mods. Those don't show up in your load order, if they don't have an esm, esl, or esp file. And as such you can't just activate or deactivate them, you have to actually remove them. Cut and paste works well, there. Gah. You've already covered a lot of the usual suspects. I mean, I would definitely recommend trying a fresh game, with no mods active, just to see if there is a mod that is causing it. Which in my mind, has to be the case, because the game itself wouldnt be looking for items that it doesn't have, without a mod doing it. One last thing that I did want to mention, cuz I know that this is getting pretty long. But the papyrus logs, while they can be helpful, they don't actually point out the actual script that causes the actual crash. Because the logger dies, right as the game crashes. Which is... problematic in my case of 250+ mods. I played around, got to 50 mods but it's getting nowhere. And if I imagine that there could be more than one mod causing the issue - it's basically a nightmare (if consider just 2 mods that's more than 30k possibilities for 250 mods.. duh) I'll keep digging but looks like I have to say goodbye to my hand-crafted setup which I polished for so long. If you are using a mod manager, it *should* highlight mods with missing masters.......I do indeed use the mod manager. And it will highlight if I am missing a master module. Just in case - checked that, worked as intended. But then again - how else could one load order work one day and fail another? Regarding CC folder - where is it and what should I remove? Which is just the textures and meshes that butthesda forced on everybody in the last updates.(Gee that's real smart of them, isn't it? Provide a modder driven game with everything for your paid mods, except for the esp/esl files to make them work?)From the boards, there's at least 2 other members who have come here just this week with a similar issue. Missing creation club stuff that they don't have on their machine. While I'm really not trying to make light of the situation that you have going on here, I'd advise breaking away from the notion of "Well it worked yesterday, why isn't it working today?" We are talking about Bethesda here. Their reputation for reliability sits somewhere in the pipes below your toilet, and just about into the septic tank. So you have only four mods to examine, than 250+ :wink: On the other hand, you say the game crashes before you load a savegame or a new game. At this time, these mods are not loaded. Check your installation via steam. Perhaps some files of the basegame are corrupted. Last but not least, that's just the papyruslog. So of course I disabled the mentioned indexed mods in my first try. Alas, to no avail. I could agree with the part about graphical engine albeit there is literally nothing for it to render for the crash is happening in main menu. As you can see it only contains CC related things from start to end (with the end being "aaaBSTestSpecialScript" which I presume stands for "aaa, bullsh*t test special script!")Since I understand - the log does not necessarily contain the relevant information for the crash reason(s) - if at all, that's why I mentioned the nightmare of trying to find the mod(s) causing an issue when I have 250+ of them installed. EDIT: I already did the integrity check via steam - when updating from 1.10.162 to 1.10.163 (it downloaded me the updated .exe and reported that "1 file failed the check" - which is indeed the .exe file).
