Hey guys! I am the creator of the "Musical Lore" mod for Fallout 4 and Skyrim, I am currently playing the game with mods to test out my mod and enjoy the game however recently I cannot add any mods due to the recent update to Fallout 4 that changed the way plugins work, whenever I finish a modding the game I tend not to update it other than weapon or armor mods, is it safe to update? have you guys encountered any issues with your modded games after updating to the latest version?

Heyas Fustru!

As unstable as the Fallout 4 game is, I dunno if it's ok to call Any version number of it "safe". However, yes... the last two releases did make changes to the way that it reads the file headers for mod files. If it detects a header with .9500000 (I think that's the right number of zeros) in it, rather than a header of 1.000000 it can sometimes refuse to even recognize that the file exists.

You can try this https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/42497 which makes the game skip the header check. That's been working so far with me, since I have an older version, and so far have not had any problems with newer mods released since the update.

Otherwise, you're stuck with manually changing the header version in either the CK or Xedit.

Hope this helps :)

Thanks for the replies!

Actually my build is very stable and I have never crashed once .. but I just want all my mods to keep working .. I have mostly weather mods, more NPC's weapons and armor .. housing as well .. mostly cosmetics but nothing game changing ... I would like to update though to make sure all my mods are released and are working with the latest versions.

Hey Again fustru!

I'm glad to hear that your game has been working really well for you. That's actually really good.

First thing I would recommend doing before you update, is make a backup of the following folders.

Your game installation folder. That can take up some real estate on your hard drive, solid state drive, or a usb stick. But it's very much worth it.

If you have a mod manager, make a backup of all of it's files too, as some of the managers don't install the mod files directly into your game folder.

Make a backup of your fallout4 documents folder.

C:\Users\YournameHere\Documents\My Games Now, most likely, your computer's login won't be "yournamehere" But it's easy to find, you just click on your computer icon, then click into your documents folder.

Also make a backup of your appdata folder. C:\Users\yournamehere\AppData\Local\Fallout4\

As this contains your plugins.txt file, which is what the game uses to know which plugins you have, which ones are active, and which ones are not active.

There are gonna be 4 files in your game folder that get updated, when you update via steam. There is also another file that can optionally get updated, which is the CK 64bit version.

As for mod compatibility. You can still maintain compatibility even with an older version of the CK. The only change the new CK makes, is that it writes a header version of 1.000000 instead of 0.950000

(Which is the cause of so many mod conflicts between versions of the game!) If you are still using the older CK or Xedit, all you have to do before you save the file, is edit that header version number to the version that you are wanting to publish for.

So if you want to release a mod that is compatible with .162~ you have a header number of 1.000000 for version ~.138 you have header 0.950000

Hope this helps :)

Thank you for the extended explanation, I will make sure to do that, but scouring through all the comments on the nexus on various mods I see not many people seem to have issues so I guess it's safe to update.

Thanks for the help!

Heyas Fustru.

No problem at all. :)

I would definitely make that backup copy of the folders that I recommended before.

I dunno, maybe it's just my frame of mind at the moment, cuz I'm really tired and need to get to bed. But reading through some of the problems that we've got threads about in the support sections, and the their problems being so darned hard to figure out.... I dunno if it's a safe bet to upgrade this game right now.

I'd recommend looking through some of those threads, looking at the problems that people are having, and how much trouble we have in trying to figure it out and get it fixed... so that you can make an educated decision for yourself.

Tho I will go ahead and say this. I had backups when the updates hit, and I'm really, really, really glad I was able to reset mine. I don't think I'd have the patience for some of this stuff that people are getting hit with.
