NatePwnsAll
I try to start up SKSE through Steam, the window opens and is black for a couple of seconds, then crashes. I have already tried starting up SKSE with all of my mods disabled, to no avail, I am using the latest version of SKSE available, and running the game from Vortex has the same issue. Mercury71
What do you mean by "start up SKSE through steam"? Steam should be running first, then run the skse executable from Vortex dashboard or from your desk if you have made an skse.exe shortcut there (so you dont have to start up Vortex to play). I'm pretty sure I had both Steam and Vortex running when attempting to open SKSE.
wfandrews
Trying to start up skse64 through Steam is probably the problem. Try starting it by the skse64_loader.exe. I have been playing games on Steam for going on nine years and in that time have formed the opinion that when I have a problem with a Steam game Steam is just as likely to be part of the problem as part of the solution. JimmyRJump
Always start skse from your desktop. Make a shortcut for the skse64loader.exe and start the game with that.
wfandrews
Do you need Vortex running in order for skse64 to run?
NatePwnsAll
Do you need Vortex running in order for skse64 to run?skse crashes regardless if Vortex is running or not. Trying to start up skse64 through Steam is probably the problem. Try starting it by the skse64_loader.exe. I have been playing games on Steam for going on nine years and in that time have formed the opinion that when I have a problem with a Steam game Steam is just as likely to be part of the problem as part of the solution.I already tried that, neglected to mention that in OP. Oops. Always start skse from your desktop. Make a shortcut for the skse64loader.exe and start the game with that.Unfortunately, that did not work. anjenthedog
Do you need Vortex running in order for skse64 to run? No. In fact, I often shut down vortex prior to playing, because it's a bit of a memory hog. Steam must be running, but Vortex doesn't. I run Skyrim using a shortcut to SKSE64 like Jim, wfandrews, and Mercury71 suggested. As long as Steam is running, the game boots just fine. With that said.... loading a savefile is another question, and while you didn't suggest that, and it isn't technically germane to whether SKSE will fire up the Skyrim outer shell (aka startup screen), but fwiw, a bad save will often fail the game back to desktop (ime)... (in case you're experiencing those symptoms)
JimmyRJump
Are you sure that the skse launcher doesn't get blocked by your anti-virus software? Some AV does that because skse makes 'changes' to system folders (that's what the "My Games" folder is) by adding saves and back-ups.
NatePwnsAll
Problem is solved, turns out it was a mod after all, specifically the file that remains in the game folder when the mod is disabled. Thanks for the help.
