Cannot get OBSE to work with MO2, even following guides...

Greetings, here is my situation/setup:

- Fresh Steam install of Oblivion (Only the 3 Unofficial Patches have been installed).

- Both my Steam library and MO2 are installed on a dedicated gaming drive (F:)

- Using only Mod Organizer 2 (No other mod management tool is installed at the moment).

- Installed OBSE v21 as per the Readme instructions.

- Oblivion starts up normally from Oblivion.exe and OblivionLauncher.exe without issue.

When attempting to start Oblivion from MO2 (either the oblivion.exe or oblivionlauncher.exe) I get a CTD after the starting logos play. The error is a generic Windows error message "Something has caused this program to stop working. Please close the program."

To try and resolve this I found these 2 guides online:

https://github.com/ModOrganizer2/modorganizer/wiki/Running-Oblivion-OBSE-with-MO2

and

https://github.com/ModOrganizer2/modorganizer/wiki/Executables-window

They seem to overlap but in either case when I get to the part in the first link that says,

"Select Oblivion.exe, Check the Force Load Libraries and click on the Configure Libraries button. Check the checkbox on the line that says Oblivion.exe and obse_1_2_416.dll."

That simply wasn't possible for me, as the box with those options was entirely blank. There was no "Oblivion.exe" or "obse_1_2_416.dll" for me to select. So, I manually added both of those files using the "Add Line" option then made sure to check the checkbox next to the lines with the file names and ensured "Force load libraries" is checked as well. The results are the same CTD message upon startup.

I tried shutting down and restarting MO2, no change.

I re-verified that I installed OBSE according to the Readme for the Steam edition of Oblivion, I did.

I tried deleting my Oblivion startup folder under /Documents and launching the game (bypassing MO2) to recreate the folder and oblivion.ini file, no change.

I tried rebooting my PC, no change.

I'm at a total loss for what I can do to move forward. sad.png

Commenting for a solution as well.

I'm in the same situation as you!

I never found a solution to the problem, however I did find a workaround. Its not the desired way to handle the situation but I tried every avenue to no avail (I actually read someplace that in my situation it might be impossible to resolve), so the only way I found to get OBSE to work with MO2 is to purchase a second copy of Oblivion at GOG.com

Not kidding, if what I read is true (I don't have a link unfortunately, it was a week ago now) OBSE simply won't work if you're using a Steam and MO2 combination (presumably due to the DRM layer that Steam imployes).

I bought a GOG copy and started over and it works fine now. That's the only suggestion I can give, unfortunately.

  • 10 months later...

To others reading this thread, I have been using Steam Oblivion, with OBSE for nearly a year. I use MO2 (v2.3.2) and had not heard of "GOG.com" until I read these comments. So, a second copy was NOT essential to get it all to work for me. I also use vorpX and once tuned, that works great too.

Per MO2, once OBSE is properly installed, the launcher is no longer needed. Just run the Oblivion program. If I try to run the OBSE launcher, I get a "you have a steam version of Oblivion, run it directly" sort of message. I believe it's because MO2 force loads the OBSE library, though I'm not totally sure.

The only issue I have is the first time I run Oblivion (each day), that run is essentially a Steam login. OBSE does not appear to load, but the game does. However, once the game is ready, at the main screen, I quit the game and rerun Oblivion again. On the second run (once I'm logged into Steam) the game runs fine, including OBSE. If I quit the game and come back hours later, Oblivion will run, with OBSE, right away again (no double running).
