The 200 year old weapon rant

All this talk of things having to be rusty, chipped and the whole "after 200 years old you get, look good you will not" I have a bayonet that went belonging to my Great, Great Grandfather that was used in Two World Wars and apart from one tiny chip in the blade is in mint condition. I also have a pair of flintlock pistols with spring mounted bayonet from 1753 and a horse pistol from 1801, again all in mint condition and all shiny, nothing wrong with the springs, the wooden furnishings or anything. If a weapon is cared for it will survive centuries with only the most minor of cosmetic wear and tear, so please can we stop all the argueing over texture being "too clean"

well, that was cathartic  had to get it out of my ssystem

Yes, that is true. But these weapons aren't well cared for. There's no way a gun can go that long in mint condition in a nuclear wasteland. If it was locked up, sure. But what about the guns the raiders have. Most likely, they didn't get it handed down through generations, they got it from a person they killed. And that person probably got it from a person they killed. Then they got it from a super mutant who got it from another person who got it from the original owner. All this while travelling through the wasteland, in constant use. So while I agree that it can be cared for that long, not here.

There should be a mint condition version of all the weapons. So if you look in a place where there should be a perfect condition weapon, like in the vault where you start it will be all shiny. But if you get a gun from a supermutant it will be all beat up and dirty.

Prehaps prehaps not. surely even some raiders look after their weapons or they could in cases be like family heirlooms, handed down from generation to generation father/mother teaching son/daughter how to care and mantains something that will bring them food, protection and explosive entertainment  what I guess I meant in my first post is that weapons CAN be in good condition aswell as in poor condition. Prehaps someone can mod the weapons like in Obliivion so that you get rusty, normal and fine varients of each weapon.

edit:well Speedy beat me to this posts point there

I really don't think any of these weapons would be in use at all after being passed around for two hundred years if they weren't taken care of. Taking the utmost care of your weapons would be a necessity of survival and it would be something that would be taught from a very young age in order for your offspring to survive.

Blah blah rant.

Point is, in a post-apocalyptic wasteland, rusted and ratty weapons just look cool. I love my rusty, beaten Desert Dragon 'cuz it matches my rusty, beaten character and the rusty, beaten world they patrol.

Ratty weapons also serve to make the mint weapons look all the more awesome.

I understand the need to rant...I've had my share. Realism is not an inherent part of this game. It was meant to entertain and present an alternate reality. The Construction Kit will, however, allow you to change anything you do not like about the game...such as adding mint-condition versions of the weapons.

Something I'd like to see done is having various wear-n-tear versions of each weapon with the model/texture being swapped out based on the condition percentage. Five versions to be exact.

75-100% - Perfect finish

50-74% - Used (current look-n-feel)

25-49% - Slight physical damage and filthy-looking

1-24% - Heavily damaged and run down

0% - Physically broken

Of course, this may pose a problem when using the weapon and the condition crossing one of the thresholds. The game engine might not handle swapping it out very well. ;)
