"Stand by" or "Shut down"

Recommended Posts

Hello

I bought myself a new Rig a few Weeks ago which was a little expensive, so i am very sensitive right now about my new System.

I just wanted to know what is better for the Components/PC in the long Run, completely Shut the System down when i go to slepp or go into "Save Energy" Mode?

I am not a Computer Expert at all, so pardon my Question.

meh i just leave mine running. youll be looking to buy new parts for replacement due to being out of date before you are looking to replace them from them always being on.

i do shut mine off occasionally, usually when i know im going to be gone for a few days. figure id give it a rest when i know i wont be using it. but other then that, day to day use, it doesnt get shut off.

I shut my computer down, but a big part of why is simply because my computer is in my room and within close proximity to my bed. The light and noise would keep me up all night.

Now if my computer was somewhere else in my house and it was something cheap say a Dell, I would have no problem leaving it running 24/7.

lol my PC has no lights and is near silent, and its 5 feet from my bed. on top of that i have a little fan on my bed next to my pillow. both for the white noise and keeps me cool with my blankets on haha. so even if my PC made noise (which is doesnt) i wouldnt be able to hear it over my fan anyways :P

My rig has 12 fans.

6 case fans

2 watercooler fans (acts as the 7th case fan)

3 GPU fans

1 PSU fan

Doesn't really matter if I shut it down or not, but I prefer complete silence so I always shut it down for the night.

Btw, with fan controller I shut down all the fans in idle. The loudest part is the Caviar Blue HDD, and it shuts down in idle too.

I shut mine down at night (if I remember). Mine uses a lot of power and I'd rather not rack up my electric bill anymore than it is :P

Putting them into sleep mode, I never saw a reason for it. I also think it could damage your HDD and other components in the long run.

Oh yeah I forgot how high my electric bill would be if I kept my PC running all the time haha.

Also yeah sleep mode isn't too good for storage devices. Specifically SSD's. I turned off sleep mode on my system for this reason.

Standby only makes sense for offices and other networked computers grouped all in the same room since they may otherwise require long boot times or the necessity to log into them in ways beyond the normal understanding of office workers. Some businesses have even gone on to use the practice as a means of heating many of those spaces in the winter.

For personal use though, standby doesn't make much sense unless you're in a situation where you need to quickly lockdown any input or display, but keep things processing. Such as a work/rendering computer in a location accessible to children. But that really only works if you set it to require logon details once Standby has been enabled.

Turning off your computer is usually the best idea for saving power or component life, although doing it too frequently can lead to wearing out lower-end power supplies. Keeping things on, and just idle is the other alternative, but this can decrease the life of your hard drives (both SSD and Mechanical). But the average drive craps out after about 4-5 years anyway, regardless of usage, so you're usually looking to rebuild or replace significant portions of your system anyway.
