Various issues with Vortex

Hi there

So, after quite a while i got interest in playing Skyrim again, tried to launch NMM, where i would have to get the mod folder on my precious SSD (hell, only activated mods shall ever go there...), so i checked the site for any new updates, and found that Vortex is the new thing.

Now, the first issue.

When trying to set the mod staging folder for Skyrim, i picked a folder on my drive where i download all the mods and things for my games, worked perfectly fine with the old NMM before the "you need this folder to be on the same drive as the game!!!". So it should work here. But it does not. Simply because Vortex cannot deal with more than 1 subdirectory. When i had the path as "Drive:\{subfolder1}\{subfolder2}\{modfolder}", it said "not found blabla, reinitialize?", and when i hit reinitialize it deleted the modfolder i just created. So i had to change my arrangement with my subfolders which was a minor annoyment. (nvm that, found my "newer" mods folder on my ssd)

Then the second, more impacting issue.

After i managed to get the staging folder, i tried to import my old NMM mods. So i went to the import-option. And then i wanted to import them. And it said "C: X GB req \ X GB free". WHY THE HELL DOES IT WANT TO IMPORT TO C:?!? nothing ever has to touch that drive that does not need to. And the mods have no place on the system-drive, never. So how can i import the mods TO THE GODDAMN MODFOLDER I JUST PAINFULLY SET UP?

Jesus, please forgive me my temper, but i don't know why with every new iteration of a modmanager here it gets painfully more difficult to just get the mods in one folder, and on mod activation put them into the game folder.

I hope someone can help me.

There it chose as the old NMM mod location a folder that doesn't even exist and never has existed, a NMM folder on my SSD where Skyrim is installed. But for some magical reason it found all my mods in a nonexisting folder... .And then i wanted to import them. And it said "C: X GB req \ X GB free". WHY THE HELL DOES IT WANT TO IMPORT TO C:?!? nothing ever has to touch that drive that does not need to. And the mods have no place on the system-drive, never. There are things that all programs in Windows need to save in APPDATA, including NMM and Vortex on the C:\ drive.

First, NMM likes to corrupt it's own files, which a LOT of times causes Vortex to not be able to import properly.

Also, the C: drive where you didn't install any mods, probably has the "Virtual Install" folder from NMM where the VirtualModConfig.xml file is that Vortex needs to read

What Vortex is copying to the C:\ drive is for the appdata folder and to create a database of the mods.

I'm assuming you read through the Tutorial for importing from NMM in the built in knowledge of Vortex, along with the built in Video tutorial on how to import from NMM as well?

When you set the new location of the Mod Staging folder, did you hit APPLY?

A LOT of people set the Mod staging folder and forget to hit APPLY, so it goes back to default.

This here is complete misinformation before the "you need this folder to be on the same drive as the game!!!".

The Download folder can go on ANY drive, the ONLY drive that has to go on the same drive is the Mod Staging folder.

Plus, it's not really a good idea to bury things 3 - 4 subfolders deep because Vortex also creates it's own subfolder for the games it manages to if you made something like D:\mods\downloads\Skyrim you're going to end up with D:\mods\downloads\Skyrim\skyrim

all these "issues" are simply because you've not actually tried to understand vortex. this is mature software that works. there is no debate about that. it works. the caveat is, you need to follow the rules for vortex, just as you would follow the rules for any program you're going to install on your computer. they all have rules that allow them to work correctly. you have some flexibility, sure, but they all have rules that must be obeyed. vortex is no different in that regard.

if i were you, i'd look at the built in knowledge base, and i'd catch some videos off you tube - gopher gaming is a good source - that can show you how to set it up correctly.

you posted elsewhere that vortex deleted your folders - but neglected to say where you installed them.

there is a theme here that suggests you've simply plonked this down and tried to use it like nmm - this isn't nmm. if you want nmm there is a community supported version available on git that you can download and install and it will work as you expect it to.

wow, thanks for the fast replies.

well, the first issue was really due to some non-thinking, and the second, well, i tend to freak out if thinks just tell me they are putting files on C: without any explanation what it is. add to that the fact that i am currently saltier than a salt dispenser...not a good mixture :D sorry for bothering you guys, seems i have to do some more reading...
