LordSarcasm
Now, before you join/ destroy the Dark Brotherhood, most players usually run into an assassin sent after them by said organization. And then if you play long enough, you may encounter a half dozen Dark Brotherhood Assassins within a single playthrough. It;s astonishing that they would let you join their ranks at all at this point, considering you are quite possibly the single deadliest target they have have ever had. That's beside the point though. Of course the Dark Brotherhood aren't the only ones after you. Sometimes you may meet hired thugs, but the difference between them and the Dark Brotherhood encounters is that the thugs carry a message that indicates who your enemy actually is. The Dark Brotherhood assassins also carry a letter, but it doesn't tell you who actually hired them. Also, generally people would call the Dark Brotherhood for something a little more sinister than to get back at you for stealing a healing potion. For somebody to call in the professionals they must REALLY want you dead! Who do you think that would be? If you break into Maven Blackbriars house you'll find a door in the basement with a matser-level lock, and behind the door is a circle where she did the black sacrament. There is also a note to Astrid that says the target was not killed like Maven had asked, and that in the future the Brotherhood should try harder. No indication who the target might be. It could be the Dragonborn for all we know. A possible motive is that if the Dragonborn signs on with the Thieve's Guild, Maven will send you on a couple of highly confidential assignments, so perhaps she see's the Dragonborn as a potential loose end to eliminate. Except that the Aassassin encounters can begin before you even meet Maven Blackbriar or join the Guild.
stars2heaven
Well there are plenty of instances of marks joining the dark brotherhood after they either killed their assassins or killed the one who wanted them assassinated. I always figured the one/s sending them after me would either be Maven or the Thalmor.
jack013
i like to imagine they're never very successful at killing their target.also, my money's on proventus. what a c***; imperial dog!
Dweedle
rule out the Thalmor, they wouldn't use Dark Brotherhood because they send their own assasians. Maven.. maybe.. Heres something I thought of, have you started the civil war when these assasians attacks? I was thinking maybe its the opposing faction.
ShadCroly
Ya know, that's a really good question. On pretty much all my characters, I try and be as helpful and nice a person as I possibly can to everyone I meet (minus one or two individuals), so it really kinda confuses the heck out of me when I'm walking down the road and suddenly a Dark Brotherhood assassin jumps out and tries to kill me. Who did I piss off? Who did I piss off enough that they'd want to kill me? Sure, I do legally ambiguous crap all the time working for the Thieve's Guild, but how could anyone tell it was specifically me doing it? And on that note, why would ANYONE want to kill you? Anyone that knows who I am also knows that I'm the Dragonborn, the mortal with the soul of a dragon, born to save the world from complete and utter destruction. How can anyone be so short-sighted that they would doom all of existence by wanting to kill me before I've done my job? Worse yet, why would anyone want to mess with me AFTER I just crushed a dragon god beneath my boot? Could it be the Thalmor? They're evil as s*** and I murder them all the time, but they usually send their own assassination squads after me. I don't think it could be Maven. Sure, she's got connections, but you become the leader the Thieve's Guild. Would she really risk pissing off one of her big guns by calling in a hit on their leader? And I doubt it's the opposing faction during the Civil war. My current character has stopped two assassination attempts and hasn't even chosen a side yet. TheGreenLion
My guess...it was Alduin. :ninja: As it is rather vague I don't think you are supposed to be able to determine who sent them. But just about everyone hears the Greybeards speak your identity, so they could easily have followed up with the current events of you killing a dragon near Whiterun and it wouldn't be hard to pressure the guards that were there to squeal on you. Maybe a leftover band of Dragon worshippers? Hard to say.
Dweedle
Shout in the city, you get a note saying how people are not happy about the return of the dragon born. Maybe its Mede.
luzburg
Shout in the city, you get a note saying how people are not happy about the return of the dragon born. Maybe its Mede. The guy seems pretty cool. I don't think he'd do that. Though it would be ironic if you were right. This is not spoiler section before anyone forgets
formalrevya
Well there's two variants of dark brotherhood assassins sent after you. the first group, of which there are only two members, only attack you at two specific points in the story ((Which I won't spoil)) and they're always the exact same characters. the second group, are part of the radiant AI and they have similiar triggers to the armed Thugs. In that they get sent after you when you do something diabolical to the citizens of skyrim. as to why they don't actually name the person Responsible. It's most likely because the notes come from their leader and not from the person who put out the contract themselves. An assassin doesn't need to know who told their boss to tell them to kill someone, they just need to know that they're supposed to kill someone.
