Lanceor
Bitmaps are uncompressed - if your colour depth is 32 bit (most likely), each and every pixel is 4 bytes. Changing it to a jpeg will instantly reduce the size in KB by a LOT, as jpeg uses compression algorithms to reduce the size. You can also alter the quality of the jpeg from 0% to 100% - typically I use 50% or 75% for images where quality isn't too important (e.g. screenshot of a crash) or 90-95% for something that can be used as a wallpaper. Finally, you can reduce the pixel size as smaller pictures naturally require fewer kilobytes. There's plenty of websites that allow you to upload an image and they resize and convert it for you for free. They may be limited in the maximum size or number of images that they'll allow though. There's also lots of free software to convert the format to jpeg, png or gif (any of which are smaller than bmp). Check in places like CNet for such a program. Finally an image editor like GIMP (free), Paint Shop Pro ($) or Photoshop ($$$$$$$$) can easily resize and convert images (as well as lots of other stuff, such as cropping, sharpening, adjusting contrast etc.. If you're going to be uploading more than a couple of images, consider getting some software to do it. :)
