Path of Exile

Dunno if many of you know about this game, but it goes Open Beta tomorrow:

My bf and I have been playing the Closed Beta for a month or so now..and wow, this game is awesome. It feels like you are playing Diablo II, yet you are not. The skill/item system is quite different from most ARPGs, but it's quite a refreshing change.

Best thing about this company IMO, is there is no "pay to win" crap whatsoever. The only micotransactions are crappy little cosmetic items, armour paint, stuff like that. It also seems by the way the item system works, the economy wont become all inflated and crazy like it does in D2/D3.

Give it a try tomorrow, I believe Open Beta people get 3 character slots. If Diablo III ticked you off, this game will make you feel better haha.

I played PoE in closed beta for months, and liked the game and the closed beta community. But now that open beta has hit, the community has taken a turn for the worst, and its gotten so bad its not even enjoyable for me anymore. I had a few people I played with but they all quit playing, and went back to Diablo 3. I think its the influx of young teenagers, when the open beta community was mostly composed of adults.

Sounds like Guild War's system; free to play but you can buy "services" with "gems" a bit like an RL money shop; some of it is useful, like recustomising your toon's appearance, but since you can buy it for game money, nobody spends a cent on it.

If I may ask, what's an ARPG?

Action RPG. real time RPG as opposed to Turn based and the like.

something like Diablo would be an ARPG. whereas many JRPGs, like the early FF games are not ARPGs.(though it can be both. but im not sure if JARPG is a term or not :P)

I'm back after downloading and playing Path of Exile for approximately 45 minutes. I'm not a fan of the point and click movement, but other than that it seems good so far. The graphics are good, the game is pretty easy to max, the controls are responsive, and it's an interesting premise. The combat is less tedious than similar games. It's still too early for me to say anything beyond that, however.

im playing open beta currently and im 17 and played mmo's for a long time and value teamwork more than most things and currently people just quit from party's but friends are playing so yeah i party with them most of the time but yeah im really enjoying the game and would recommend it to anyone looking for a game to play.

The passive tree is so large that i've made a anti-Templar sort of character with heavy armor and spells and resurrectable minions.

i agree with your comments about the people quitting from groups and what not it takes it's tool on the community and i truly hope they keep it pay to have like armor paints and those little cosmetics things people don't really care about.

i would recommend to people who want to play with other people and have fun.

and i apoligize for any spelling mistakes or grammar what not

And i'm a New Zealander so i love to see games from NZ

The company said they will NEVER have a RMAH or any items that you can buy that makes you character better. Big win for me. But of course, there's people complaining on their forums that they should have something like that. I hope they stick with their promise...

I've met a few decent people on there so far, but yeah, the community has gone down the hole a bit since it went open beta. I play with my boyfriend and a friend that lives in town, so I always have a party at least. But, most of the people are generally rude, that's why I leave the global chat off haha. There's been a few people that have complained it's "too hard"...I just laugh and roll my eyes when people say that. It's pretty refreshing to play a game that's difficult for once.

I love the passive tree, it's pretty cool. My friend is making a Templar archer. He's SO much better than using the Ranger as an archer just because he starts at a good spot on the skill tree. I'm making a tank Marauder, no fancy movements on the skill tree with this build...you pretty much stay around in the area he starts at. Fun though, you can make some crazy hybrids. I'm thinking of making a necromancer Witch when my PSU comes in the mail :D

For an Open Beta, it functions really well. The server has been crashing a lot lately because there are so many people playing though. But, GGG is awesome about releasing patches and fixing the servers. The server will be down for 3 minutes max, then you're back to playing :D

This is going to be an awesome game if they stick with what they have. I'm just hoping this isn't going to turn into another Diablo 3...

You get those kinds of people no matter what. But, the part that's actually noteworthy here is that at any time there are about 6,000+ people playing, so it's a small minority. Additionally, GGG has done something that almost no game maker has ever done... They have moderators and actual staff watch the chat and even respond, not as some Q&A event, not as some sort of special "The world is crashing, sorry for the trouble", but actually participating and answering questions.

Beyond that, kinda really digging the skill and economy system. It encourages you to go out and farm areas, but without the diminishing returns of equipment in those areas no longer being worth picking up. Having unidentified items give you something different than identified ones adds this component of planning and risk with what you sell verses id and sell.

My only real complaints are that skill gems are a little too rare for being something that is sold for 1 scroll piece. Or that zombies are a little too squishy, and die way to fast against magic damage, compared with the sheer number of things that do lots of magic and AoE damage.
