Modding something for real. (To be built)

Hi,

Sorry to post this again but I looked at the green color on the grey background and it seemed likely that some people might find it hard to read, so here is another post in plain white.

Hello.

I am the CEO of BHFI, a corporation established with the intent to build a real world living history facility of the type that so many of us gamers and reenactors have dreamed of most of our lives. You might say my job has been to take the idea of something really cool and figure out how to do it and make it practical and sustainable.

This is not a joke nor some pie inthe sky effort but a real, fully incorporated and in the engineering stage project which has such talents and professionals as part of the team as the staff of the MMDW team from california which are people that build themed facilities such as the big parks for a living. So this is as serious as it gets, while still being a lot of fun and quite rewarding in the long run.

For quite a while now I have been looking at various ways to convey what it is we are doing, how it will look, and how it will feel. Looking at what has been done in some of the mods and the great deal of effort and talent behind them I have concluded that a MW mod is probably our best way to go to get the impact we want.

In that vein I have just started taking the plunge into doing mods for MW so that I can do a mod of the town and castle complex which we actually intend to build. Quite possibly it may expand to include a mod that also has similarities to the ME Mod, and hopefully we can share useful tidbits or be of mutual benefit in that regard.

Looking over things and playing with the editor some, and the hundreds of

mods out there, I see that it could involve quite a bit of work.

So, my thought, is that perhaps there are some people like you that might be

interested in what we are doing enough to help out with either editor time, sound clips, art, meshes, textures, general know-how or suggestions.

Middle Earth and high fantasy as part of the mod and is something

very important to us as we intend to build a large fantasy section which is

very ME oriented and may in fact have the actual LOTR name attached before

we open if negotiations with the copyright owners go well, if not of course

we just stick to the older names in use which Tolkien himself admits to

using as inspiration and source material.

My thought is that some modders might like the idea that what they are

modelling will actually be built one day and they can actually see it and

touch it and walk around in it. Credit would be given to and for contributions and efforts and made public with the distribution of the final mods.

The facility itself will be a great place to live and work, and will host convetions, weddings, filming, large reenactments and many recurring events. It will make an awesome place to host a gaming convention too.

Anyway, take a look at our website mentioned in the signature file below and

let me know what you think.

So let me get this right... you're trying to create a business and you want MEMod's help... but you don't offer any payment.

So.... for my work.... $20 an hour for modeling.

Any questions?

i dont think he would buy anything from us..but hey.. why would we give our models or anything to this project?? i just say the public is the first.. maybe after we've released it to them we can get back to that topic..

but i think there is no question about this..not from my side at least ...

shh... :shifty: .maybe 20$/hour.:D

Geez folks, having a bad day or something? Somebody get burned on a mod?

Let me reply to some of the messages I see here.

1. Everyone who works on this project is doing it for free, including me. I guarantee I have put in more hours than you can count on making the plans get to the point they have. It's about making something cool happen. I figured if anyone would understand that then modders should. Did any of you actually look at the web pages?

2. The project is educationally, environmentally and socially beneficial. It's designed by gamers and for gamers. And for the record I was modding games when we had to use an assembler/disassembler on the binaries, such as empire for unix on a pdp-11.

3. It won't make anyone any money for several years at least after it opens but if you really need some form of mercenary incentive as well there is the option to work for the company. Company policy is to first hire the people that have volunteered with the best jobs they are capable of holding.

4. Yahoo account. Real simple. Spam filtering disposable account that won't transmit viruses to our servers. Which are also donated by the local ISP.

5. This is something that goes out to people for free just like existing mods, no one is going to make money off of the mod and it will produce proper credit and acknowledgement of all the talents that went into. It's a chance to show off what you can do and then see it for real. Tell me how often any of you get that, and there is a good chance to have a great job and make some money from it eventually.

It's also the kind of credentials and visibility that can translate into the ability to raise money for doing a real game of your own too if that is what you have in mind.

So yeah, if money is all that floats it for you then why are you doing an ME mod? You can't sell it legally or you'll be sued by the current rights owners but if it comes to where we can hire people to do this sort of thing you can count on it being the people that had the good sense and foresight to help make it happen.

Either way it will get done, it will just take a little longer. I figured you folks would understand wanting to do something excellent and cool and work with people that appreciate talent for a good cause.

Anyone that has a hard time believing me can contact the people at MMDW and the professional themed facility trade associations who can verify our efforts, or you can call the secretary of state to ask about our credentials.

Tell me this, how are you going to feel in a few years when you see it is built and you passed up this chance?

"So yeah, if money is all that floats it for you then why are you doing an ME mod?"

here is the point...

we WANT to make Memod...We've started this because we want to make it...

your project is interesting but we already have a goal...

-make memod(make it look as tolkien has written),release it to public free..

so the answer to your request from my side: after we've finished memod we can reconsider.

but wait for a dev...maybe they see things other way..

about money..do you think i was serious? naive thought...

1. Everyone who works on this project is doing it for free, including me. I guarantee I have put in more hours than you can count on making the plans get to the point they have. It's about making something cool happen. I figured if anyone would understand that then modders should.

Of course you're working on it for free, it's your project! I don't know how you convinced those other poor fools to help for nothing, but some of us aren't so insane.

Did any of you actually look at the web pages?

Yes, I looked at them. Now where's the proof that you actually run this project?

2. The project is educationally, environmentally and socially beneficial. It's designed by gamers and for gamers. And for the record I was modding games when we had to use an assembler/disassembler on the binaries, such as empire for unix on a pdp-11.

It's designed for and beneficial for gamers who live in another state. None of that matters to me if I never go to it.

3. It won't make anyone any money for several years at least after it opens but if you really need some form of mercenary incentive as well there is the option to work for the company. Company policy is to first hire the people that have volunteered with the best jobs they are capable of holding.

Translation: work for free for a few years for the promise of a future job. Not going to happen.

4. Yahoo account. Real simple. Spam filtering disposable account that won't transmit viruses to our servers. Which are also donated by the local ISP.

Transmit viruses? Why would an expert modder like you not know something as simple as how to avoid email viruses? And remember what I said about not being sure of your identity? It doesn't help that you use a yahoo account instead of one from this project.

Yes, but existing mods aren't going to make someone else rich. I'm not volunteering my time so Daerk can sell MEMod and keep all the profits for himself (but maybe give me a bit if he feels like it in a few years).

It's also the kind of credentials and visibility that can translate into the ability to raise money for doing a real game of your own too if that is what you have in mind.

Finally a valid point.... but not worth it. You're expecting way too much when I can get the same visibility by working on my own personal stuff.

Either way it will get done, it will just take a little longer. I figured you folks would understand wanting to do something excellent and cool and work with people that appreciate talent for a good cause.

I would be happy to work for you all you want for money. But you're not getting free labor for a project that will never benefit me, and will allow you to make a profit off of my volunteer work.

Anyone that has a hard time believing me can contact the people at MMDW and the professional themed facility trade associations who can verify our efforts, or you can call the secretary of state to ask about our credentials.

Which proves that someone is making the project you linked to. That says nothing about your own involvement or position in the project.

Tell me this, how are you going to feel in a few years when you see it is built and you passed up this chance?

Absolutely fine. I'll probably never visit it anyway, so why would I care?

In summary, I do two kinds of work for other people:

1) That which interests me (and yours doesn't).

2) That which pays enough to get me to do it anyway, like my current job.

The overwhelming majority of people will agree with me.

The whole things just seems a bit fishy to me...But maybe I just misunderstand.

Let me try and get this straight:

-You are working on a facility for gamers/reenactments/etc...

-You want to build this facility virtually via a Morrowind mod

-You want us to be a part of the creation of this mod

That's how I understood your posts to be, in which case I am confused as to what the purpose of this mod is.
