Keyboard vs Controller

Which do you guys prefer?

I actually started playing games on Xbox 360 and was terrified of the keyboard. So when I heard you could use a wired xbox 360 controller, I decided to get Fallout New Vegas for pc.

I've tried to use the keyboard a few times, but it just feels foreign to me...which is odd because I use it to play Portal and Half Life. The keyboard has it's moments, what with console, Project Nevada, sniping!

But what do you guys prefer? And why?

Any advice on how I can finally make the full switch to keyboard would also be appreciated.

I used to play games on console exclusively, and was very adept at using the controller. When I learned about being able to mod games on PC, I decided that it was something that I just had to try out. So I bought Windows 7, installed on my Macbook Pro, and bought Oblivion. It was a very slow transition for me to get used to using the mouse and keyboard rather than the controller like I had used for my entire life. But, simply due to perserverance, my inability to get my controller to work with a Windows installation on a Mac, and perhaps to the nature of the first game that I played that way (with Oblivion not really being all that aim-intensive), it eventually became second nature for me to use mouse and keyboard. I've since completely abandoned all consoles in favor of dumping the money that would have gone towards those systems into building and upgrading a nice gaming computer. My advice for making a full switch to using keyboard would simply be to keep at it. The more you use it, the less foreign it will seem. Make sure your desk and chair are aligned properly and comfortably, so that your wrists are at the proper angles to prevent injury, and just play.

Mouse and keyboard for everything other than racing games, I use a wheel for those wherever possible. Controllers feel sluggish and clumsy to me. My advice to the OP would be stick with it, it's something that takes some getting used to.

I have mouse and controller for my pc but barely use the controller. I found for games like XCom the controller works really well, but for titles like Fallout, I use mouse and keyboard only. For the same reason as jim_uk.

With mouse + keyboard I have a faster and directer gameplay. There also are lots of key you need (hotkeys, custom mod keys) a controller doesn't have.

A friend of mine plays on a console only and is quite used to a Playstation controller. I gave him a 360 controller and let him play Crysis on the pc. He took one and a half hour for a segment I played in a quarter of that time with mouse and keyboard without much hassle. He already knew the game, he just spent way more time aiming, looking and running around. Of cause the 360 controller was the thing he constantly complained about.

So yeah, controller can complicate a game a great deal when it comes to 1st person shooter.

As of FNV: It is a rpg, but the gameplay clearly is like other first person shooter. You'll have to look and aim around a lot. I for myself, I only use VATS if I got into trouble. So I would say that my play stile relies on mouse and keyboard pretty much.

I guess I was afraid of the keyboard. I look at it and go, "wow, there's a lot of room for error." But I definitely agree, aiming is much more accurate and faster with the mouse. But there are times when it's not as fast for me. My first time using the keyboard and mouse to hack a terminal, I couldn't figure out how to close it for like fifteen minutes.

I'm going to try and use keyboard more, just because of things like Project Nevada and what not. But at least I know I'm not the only person here still using a controller.

At least if you are playing through DLCs like Old World Blues with a high level char, I could not imagine to survive long using a controller. Had trouble enough with mouse + keyboard and used VATS a lot. Since I didn't spent much in action points, I only had my one or two shots which, well, doesn't exactly do much. Enemies are so strong, that it really focuses on real time combat. They eat ammo like cookies. Edited by tortured Tomato
