How can anybody srsly play as a Vampire Hunter?

I tried to kill her immediately on my first playthrough. It is the most logical reaction, IMO, if one is a vampire hunter.

More irritating to me than the fact that I can't kill her is that the entire Dawnguard seems fine with her remaining with them after the main questline. It is a huge stretch that the leader would have bothered to listen to anything she had to say before he killed her when she first arrived. Even if one stretched disbelief far enough to accept he is suffering her presence in order to deal with the greater evil, this reason dissapates after that evil has been removed. Seems completely nonsensical to me that the leader of the DG, having devoted his life to obsessively eating, breathing, (not)sleeping vampire killing would be like, "OK vampires are a plague upon the earth. Except for you, sweetie! Want to hang out?"

Even more than that, if Serana is, as she claims, proud of being a daughter of cold harbor, then why is she happy to chill with a bunch of people devoted to killing her kind? And having demonstrated a strong instinct for survival in other ways, wouldn't she decide there was a better, safer, place for her to do her thing?

Personally I like other things about the DLC, but...

To answer the OP, I can't seriously play it. But I can't accept that Akatosh would tap a vampire to save the world, either, sooo.....

They do explain why you can't kill her actually. Killing Serana makes no sense whatsoever, wether you like it or not you need her if you want to stop Harkon, who is a much, much bigger threat. This is the explanation you're given as soon as you even mention to Serana that you're a vampire hunter and killing vampires is kind of your thing.

Also, Serana is clearly not a ravenous monster but a person just like anyone else, she happens to be a Vampire but I don't think anyone can really make a convincing argument for her deserving to die any more than anyone else in Skyrim, the Dragonborn has committed far more acts of brutality than she has. If you want to play a zealot who kills vampires solely because they are vampires that's fine, but it means you won't be able to do Dawnguard.

As for justifying it through roeplaying, it's easy. You don't like Serana, you have little reason to trust Vampires based on prior experience, as far as you know they are all monsters. On the other hand, it's not every day you find an ancient Vampire with an Elder Scroll on her back. Why does she have the scroll? Why was she locked away? Why were other Vampires looking for her? Only one person can help you answer those questions and that person is Serana. Killing Serana on the spot accomplishes nothing.

In short, your character has to set aside his/her personal bias and look at the big picture. A Vampire hunter that kills without thought is no better than any other wanton murderer.

How exactly shoud Bethesda do such a thing? You are using a mod and such stuff wasnt meant to be in the game. Shall they try to make every single situation that can happen to be roleplayable as every single character imaginable?

Also, just as a hint, if you truly roleplay, you can end up in situations where you are forced to do stuff you dont like to do. Forcing situations into something that fits your charakter isnt always the best idea.

The mods aren't necessary at all. Bethesda should indeed think about the main playstyles or characters and provide a limited set of choices accordingly but in this case my choice should be the norm.

You are a vampire hunter, you are told the vampires want something which is most likely related to Serana I'm assuming its the Elder Scroll and you are handing it right over TO the vampires. Her explanation when you tell her the Dawnguard would want her dead is: "Well look kill me and you've killed one vampire. If people are after me then there's something bigger going on." I'm sorry but that does NOT suffice.

There just isn't any reason why you should trust her you should kill her to secure what the vampires were looking for that is what a vampire hunter does that is what the game even tells you the Dawnguard would want.

I've been trying to kill her myself right now, the xx should be 02 if Dawnguard is at the top of your loadorder. But using "setessential 02002B6C 0" doesn't let me kill her. :(

Edit: Even using kill on her afterwards doesn't work.

The question is, why exactly do you want to kill her "on sight"? Looks like a fanatic to me.

I know that the DG questline is not great or logical, but thats not the point.

I can live with the fact that it's the smart option not to kill her and see where she leads you, but the forced friendship after that is nonsense. It's like Bethesda wanted to offer us a follower with a more indepth character and backstory, but they didn't feel like creating two of them for those of us that just don't want anything to do with vampires. Instead they tried to create a one-size-fits-all follower that is completely forced and unwanted from the vampire hunter's point of view.

I honestly thought we were gaining a good friend in the guy that walks up to the Dawnguard Fortress with you the first time you go there, especially since he had so much room for growth, so I was very dissapointed when you never really hear from him again. He would've been an excellent counterpart to Serana for us vampire hunters.

I would agree with you if it weren't for the fact she is carrying an Elder Scroll and even admits it. She already gives you directions to the castle when you first meet her but you could argue that that isn't enough without her guidance.

I continued playing and told myself she completely took control over me and is using me against my will it was pretty neat when we came across the destroyed Vigil and I roleplayed like I was about to break free from her spell .

Anyway this whole plot is ridiculous so I brought her back and returned to the Dawnguard and Isran rightfully is like WTF are you doing? When he asks where she is now, one of the answers is literally "She wanted to go home, so I took her to her castle." I facepalmed. Then he again rationally asks why you didn't take the Elder Scroll and the answers are: "There were too many." "Im lucky I made it out alive." "I never had the chance." All of the choices obviously don't explain why you did not take it when she was still alone... I took the last option going with my indoctrination RP.

How is this so bad? How did nobody think this through? Surely they must have had enough time to release DLC when they feel it is ready.

I killed her once, and not on a modded game either. When I was escorting her to Volkihar the first time I decided to investigate a cave. Well, 'mistakes' were made and she became hostile to me (I'd accidentally attacked one of the draugr she resurrected). I smacked her down and she died. Her body was lootable and everything. As I stood there looking at her, I thought to myself "This is probably NOT good for the Dawnguard questline...", so I reloaded the game. I haven't been able to duplicate the feat since. A glitch, I guess.

As far as Beth's vampire storyline, I guess we didn't get the memo that vampires are all sparkly, cool, and whatnot now instead of bloodthirsty undead monsters.

I think what Bethesda's intent was....was that we were all meant to be rather enamored by Serana with her further fleshed out character, etc...note she is one of the very few Vamps (her and her mother) without the uglification facial changes that came with the DG Vamp DLC...also note all the sudden threads popping up with people wanting Serana marriageable when DG first came out.

Well, first things first...Even though it doesnt show up, you can go talk to Isran after meeting Serana....And he will tell you to "play along" to see what is up....Second, after the MQ, you can ask her to get cured, PROVIDED you made a certain question and chose the right after-question at a certain point....And third, well, Serana isnt all bad, I mean, I keep her a vampire in case I ever want to turn, but she is one of the most worked on characters of the game...How can you hate her?

First off re-read the OP's post, it's not about 'hate', it's about Role Play....the discussion is RP'ing Vamp Hunters with Role Plays not able to be Role Played due to Serana's story line.

As for curing Serana's....that is not the point, you Dovahkin does not know that...plus you have to play nice with Serana, be all concerned about her, etc....to have her cure herself, why would a Dovah with no personal interest or pleasant feelings for her be concerned about 'how she feels'?

You are missing the point about Serana's Vampirism, Dovah's being RP'ed as Vamp hating Hunters are not being Role Played to eventually ask Serana to make them a Vamp themselves...I know for my own game, my Dovah was not overly pleasant to her....she's a Vampire, he's a Werewolf, he does not like Vamps full stop, the only good Vamp is a dead Vamp in his books.....Yet he can't complete his mission due to Serana's essential status even once the DG story line has come to an end....That fact I am working on to allow my Dovah to complete his mission.

That's a fair argument and it's entirely up to the individual how they roleplay, but to me this seems like a missed oppurtunity for character growth. People change, for better or worse, and a character who remains the same no matter what is in my opinion very boring. Again, roleplay is a very personal thing and I'd be silly to try to tell anyone how to do it, but that's my opinion.

I do have a question though, purely out of curiosity. How does your character justify killing Serana after all she's done for him and all of Tamriel?
