krisjay
I'd say it's Delphine. I don't think it's Farengar, because when he asks you to go get the Dragonstone he says he got the info from a reliable source, which I think is Delphine. She's the one examining the stone, and says 'Make sure you give me a rubbing' (or something along those lines), which hints she was the one that wanted the stone retrieved because she wanted to go see the dragon burial sites (which she does). Since she's a blade, she would be always searching for the next Dragonborn, and anything related to dragons. Her note in Jurgen Windcallers Cript even is signed 'A Friend'. It would only make sense that she would know where word walls are.
ProfessorUltraBadass
It is a random npc whom sees you shout. Atleats it is ingame, you can think whatever you want. If someone sees you shouting from a short distance, a letter will be sent. The npc:s name will not be said, but it ill still technically be from that npc. I usually get the letter after you kill your first dragon. Then the letter comes from one of the whiterun guards, or Irileth. Though i like the ideas of the Ebony warrior, Farengar or Hermeus Mora being guilty.
Dovahkiin234
Some people said it might be Delphine, or the Graybeards It can't be Delphine because I remember getting a letter after I finished the main quest; if it were her, she would put Delphine at the end. Can't be the Graybeards, because I got that letter after killing a certain dragon who lives on a certain mountaintop and teaches certain things to you and is related to a certain world-eater. Farengar? I don't know. Doesn't seem likely. The Dragonborn fanclub/Courier's Guild? Call me Sheogorath, but that's the most logical of them all. The couriers can track me down ANYWHERE. I even had one show up right in the middle of nowhere, so... yeah.
StarMystyk
I thought Delphine at first, but when the Courier is talking to you he says, "Don't know who it's from. He wouldn't say. Just that he's a friend of yours." My first character has stopped receiving these Courier visits. I think I may've found all the word walls. I've just been waiting, and hoping, that this mysterious friend would make themselves known. But, its been a few game weeks and maybe it never happens. We may never know. pheo3309
I say it's Calcemo. You buy a dwarven arrow in Riften. Less than a minute later a courier shows up with a letter from Calcemo, who wants you to come all the way to Markarth so he can look at the arrow you just bought. Obviously, the guy either has a one heck of an intelligence network, or is in posession of powerful clairvoyant powers. If anyone is capable of knowing your every move, it's him. And why would someone who owns a whole Dwemer museum be interested in a four septim arrow? It's obviously just an excuse for him to meet you in person. Other possibilities include the Psijics, who do appear to be keeping an eye on the Dragonborn without wanting to interfere directly. Note that the guards keep reporting sightings of Psijics monks appearing and vanishing in thin air, suggesting they're running some kind of Men in Black operation in the background. ...Actually, yeah, this is my new theory: Calcemo is the head of a group of undercover Psijic Monks in charge of monitoring and covertly helping the Dragonborn, and he occasionally sends anonymous letters to nudge the Dragonborn in the right direction. I had to giggle at this one, but it also left me with the idea. If not Calcemo, but what about the Psijic Order? Might be a stretch, but eh. Anyone's a suspect at this point. Even Braith. Monkinsane
I always got the impression that the letters were coming from Farengar, the mage in Dragons Reach. Speaking with him gives me the impression that he may be an ex-blade and is trying to help you without getting directly involved to expose himself. I lean toward this hypothesis, because Delphine tells you she got her information about the dragon burials from the dragonstone that you had to give to Farengar. My guess is that he passed the stone on to Delphine after examining it. Just my $0.02, MikeI agree, Delphine was there talking toFaringaar when I brought him the Dragonstone. So makes sense. Monkinsane
Why not Hermaeus Mora? he has all knowledge hoarded, he wants the dragonborn to grow in power to defeat Miraak, he could send a servant to give the letter to the courier and TA DA! I Like your theory.
TheObstinateNoviceSmith
I know this is a far fetched idea, but what if the "friend" isn't a real NPC which is why it is only signed "a friend" in those letters? Like Bethesda didn't bother to have an exact NPC in that role but just wanted the dragonborn to get letters from some mysterious person. It just seems like anyone named can be excluded or eliminated at a point or two and or for a reason or two so either there is no real NPC behind the mask so to speak, or it is more than one NPC that has been "a friend" to the dragonborn. gingersnapples
trick question: the dragonborn sends the messages when your not looking and during fast travel/wait. :P on a more serious note: its other adventurers, people you don't know but are always near by at the right time. traveled near sources of power, but only realized what they were when the booming voice of a dragonborn roared nearby. either that or its the ebony warrior. he's perfect in everything.
TheObstinateNoviceSmith
Oh and while I like the theory of Hermaeus Mora, I don't think he would ever refer to the dragonborn as an ally or friend. He would see the dragonborn as a servant and or instrument so that would be why I'd eliminate him as being the friend.
