Where did my GBs go? :)

I've used Vortex since I started modding... And I like it... It works and it's pretty straight forward... But what it is doing with my HDD space, I have no idea...

So here is my problem. I download all my mods to a different HDD, for storage. I then drag & drop to Vortex.

Currently, the total size of all the mods I've downloaded for special edition (NOT INSTALLED - JUST WHOLE COLLECTION), is at 65.4GB.

But in my steam directory, my actual Skyrim SE directory is 97.6GB in size, and my users\appdata\roaming\vortex folder is 132GB.

So a rough calculation shows that when modding with Vortex, it roughly tripples everything in size? Surely, this can not be correct?

Also, for the life of me, I can not get Vortex to store the archives on another disk.

Any way to fix this?

No, every few weeks or so we have to explain this to people that Vortex does NOT triple your space.
It's Windows that counts the hardlinks as space.

You have the Mod Archive =- Space of the mod archive
Mod Staging Folder - Unzipped archive = Space of unzipped Mod archive
Data Folder - Hardlink to Unzipped archive in Mod Staging Folder = ZERO SPACE, however, Windows counts it as the same size as the Unzipped Archive in the Mod Staging Folder because "Windows"

So...example

Mod Archive (100mb) + Unzipped Mod Archive in Mod Staging Folder (250mb) = Hardlink in Data folder (0) = 350mb

Windows incorrectly reports it this way: Mod Archive (100mb) + Unzipped Mod Archive in Mod Staging Folder (250mb) = Hardlink in Data folder (250) = 600mb

And if you have a small boot SSD - get both Downloads and Mod Staging Directory out of AppData/Roaming/Vortex - which is on your boot drive.

Vortex makes it easy to relocate those directories. If you have problems - ask for help.

That is assuming you don't let Steam install your games in Program Files on the boot drive. Fix that also if needed..
