Persistent crashing upon entering Castle Volkihar *Spoilers inside*

Edit: Fixed. Read my second post for my fix.

So I've beaten the Dawnguard quest on the vampire side, told Garen to clean out the entrance to the courtyard after beating Harkon, and after doing some stuff in Solstheim to try to come back. It crashes every single time. I've even tried the back entrance now that the courtyard door is cleaned up. Tried googling all over the place to figure out what's going on. Have yet to find a single thing.

Also one other bit, that when I clicked on that last bit of dialogue with Garen to clean up the courtyard, it just sat there, rather then closing the dialogue like it should have, until I tabbed out. I'm just curious if that bugged up the process to clean it up properly and could be why its crashing now. It only started this crashing after I beat the questline and told him to clean up the courtyard. Every time before that it was fine. It's just now that it crashes every single time when I try to enter. It loads for a bit, and just when it seems like it's finished loading, instant crash.

I'll post my load order below if anything has something to do with it, I've cleaned all my dlc, and the update esm as well, through tes5edit. I have not deactivated any mods in my playthrough either.

Well found my issue. Was the flowing cape mod. It was inactive, but after completely uninstalling it, including the ini tweak and everything else with it, I'm able to get safely back inside without crashing. I'm only going to guess it was because I had it sitting inactive, that it was causing issues. I'm not completely sure though. I just know that I can get back inside now.

I suppose this thread can die now since I fixed my own issue.

Not only your own issue, mine too :)

Forgot to delete the varlet lines in the ini, so my game was crashing over and over... and your hint about the ini save my current gameplay, so Thanks :)

I'm thinking it might just be specifically the ini tweaks when the mod is inactive that could be the source of the crashing. Just a thought crossed my mind the other day when I tried redoing the last Dawnguard quest and reloading the save

right before fighting Harkon and listening to his monologue

for the achievement I somehow missed and it began crashing then. It made my whole theory in my first post moot. That's when I got the idea that maybe that the flowing cape mod had something to do with it, as it does modify Harkon's cape or at least the verlet it uses.

And because there's a holding cell for Harkon (the one you fight at the end I believe), in Volkihar, why else could I not enter?

Thankfully completely uninstalling it fixed it. Although my guess is its only unsafe if its inactive. I've yet to try much with it active. Perhaps I should post this as a heads up to those uninstalling it, in the mod's comments?

Oh thank you both for this. Suddenly I was crashing consistently upon entering Castle Volkihar, and I couldn't figure out why... uninstalled the mods I had added since the last time I'd visited the castle and nope, still crashed every time i opened the front door. It sucked because I was like... maybe a third of the way through the questline... But I too had tried the flowing capes mod but forgot to delete the ini changes, deleted them and it's loading again. Would have probably taken me hours to figure out without this. What's weird though is that I had been to the castle since I tried the mod and after I had (partially) uninstalled it and it didn't crash, but this one time it was just crash-tastic.

I have been having the same problem, it ruined my previous Assassin/Mage/Vampire play-trough in fact.

However I have remembered something...

If using Mod Organizer, there are 2 "varlet", since there are 2 "skyrim.ini". One is in the normal C-drive (or at least that is where mine is), and the other is in your mod organizer folder. For me it was "C:\Users\NAME\Desktop\ModOrganizer\profiles\PLAYER NAME\skyrim.ini". Your file is probably some place different.

Maybe only deleting the one in mod organizer is necessary but I deleted both just to be safe!
