Baldur's Gate 3 - Unable to get mods to work

Hello all,

I am trying to mod Baldur's Gate 3 and so far haven't had any luck.

I downloaded all the mods into Vortex as usual, installed and enabled them all. But whenever I play, non of the .pak files are working. All of the loose file mods seem to be working fine.

I did try the Candor mod manager but it didn't work at all and corrupted my game, so gave up on that pretty quick.

I know people are managing to run this, I am just wondering what I am missing.B

Any tips will be great (and I understand it is probably user error!)

When you start Baldurs Gate 3 and close it again, look out for a notification in Vortex telling you that "modsettings.lsx" was reset. If you get that, at least one of your mods in invalid, meaning it's not supported by (this version of) BG3.

Also check on the load order page that the mods are all enabled. They should be by default but just making sure.

Finally I would advice that before you fully jump into modding, get one mod that is easy to verify if it works, e.g. one that unlocks a race for BG3, enable only that one mod, see the race appears in the menu.

If that works the tools are ok in principal and the problem is most likely with the specific mods you're using.

If even that single mod doesn't work it's likely you're doing something wrong so check if there is a notification, blinking icons, anything trying to get your attention in Vortex.

Of course it's always possible there is a bug, can't rule that out, but honestly it shouldn't be your first assumption because we do test this stuff. ;)

Hi, thank you for all of your help!

I am not new to modding, have modded other games through vortex before but BG3 just seems to not be working for me at all. I understand it is probably user error. Tried loading every mod individually, none of them worked, and now when I try and modify the load order it pops up with "Failed to write load order", saying I need to start the game. I have started the game multiple times while trying this out, but it does not recognise that. I haven't seen anyone else have this problem so I assume it is something I have done... any ideas?

I think the problem may mean you don't have an in-game profile yet. BG3 has this concept of profiles - I guess so multiple users can play the game on the same system, each profile would have its own savegames and also it's own mod setup.

In Vortex on the Load order screen you have to select which BG3 profile you want to apply the mods to. Maybe there isn't one yet.

Otherwise: The "Failed to write load order" notification gives you additional information when you press "More". Even if that info doesn't make sense to you, when you ask for help, always include it. Others (we devs specifically) might make sense of it.

Hey, i have a similiar problem.
Im not entirely new to modding too, but Baldurs Gate 3 seems to be impossible to mod for me.
Where i am having my problems is, that the list for "in-game profiles" in vortex is just empty, and
i cant choose any in the "load order".
I tryed to reinstall it all, deleting all mods, reinstalling the game, setting up vortex profiles, but nothing worked.
Im using the version of Vortex where i can manualy change the games Location, and hope that this isnt the problem.
Would be happy for any help, since i try setting up a modpack for me and some friends to play together, but
right now nothing works at all.

Edit: Okay, forget it. it somehow managed to load a profile at random now, after my i dont know how manyth try of restarting XD

I'm having same problem as Muddyevil. Under patch 6 I had about 8 mods loaded and they all worked fine. Then me, being the fool that I am, followed Larians instructions to the letter deleting all that they recommended (people using mods under patch 6) to get patch 7 to work. Just can't get mods to work under patch 7.

I am having this problem now with the full release of BG3, it was easy to mod just fine during Early Access.

I posted this in another thread in the BG3 specific forum on here:

I am having the same problem, it seems Vortex is doing "something" to delete the "load order" then spit out an error:

"Failed to write load order"
"Please run the game at least once and create a profile in-game"

But when I run the game, it gives me the "Failed to load the main menu from the current game mod. The main menu in that mod requires the level. Make sure to clear any local mods and try again." error.
The only way I can fix that to boot up the game again is delete %AppData%\Local\Larian Studios\Baldur's Gate 3\
I can then boot up the game to play it, but once I try to mod it again with Vortex is spits out the "Failed to write load order" error again and makes BG3 spit out the "Failed to load the main menu from the current game mod" error...
It has to be a problem with Vortex, it worked just fine during Early Access. I even followed their instructions for preparing for the full release.

Could Vortex be expecting profiles when the game no longer uses them?

Edit:

This is what the error in Vortex shows under details:
