New User... vortex says DL failed, but still DL'ing?

I was trying to DL a big mod for Skyrim (improved textures). The DL hung and went inactive per the Vortex GUI. So I tried to cancel it and thought I had (it disappeared from the DL list). Tried to start it again, to re-try (via link from Vortex site in browser). But I got a Fail message, and the message complains about the .7z file being write protected.

So I found the file (not on the path the popup said it would be on, but close-ish). And to my surprise it is still growing. So the DL that I thought was hung appears to still be running, which is why I can't retry it. But since the DL is no longer listed as healthy/working in the UI, will I be able to install when (hours from now) this big mod finally finishes DLing?

And why is Vortex putting these DLs on my C drive when I used Settings and configured it to use my E drive?

It's all rather confusing for the n00b... despite the good video tutes. The actual app doesn't seem to behave quite as the tutes describe it :-)

Being a Skyrim N00b also, I'm a little puzzled by compatibility. I'm running the VR game on Steam. I'd like to bump up the graphics and ambient sound quality with a few recommended mods, which is why I bought Vortex and started to tinker. But I'm now learning that Skyrim VR is not quite the same as SE... and there's this patch or tool called SKSE which might or might not work with VR version... and some mods rely on SKSE and some don't... yikes. I google for info about it but keep getting articles that are out of date, referring to NMM and so on.

When you've been doing this a while I'm sure it all makes perfect sense. I've been modding ETS2 for years, and that can get kind of confusing for n00bs also, but I've got the hang of it now. But I'm all new and bewildered when it comes to Skyrim mods. It's a new language to learn.

If anyone has an UP TO DATE definitive guide to modding Skyrim VR safely, I'd sure appreciate a link.

Short note on the download. If you have one that is problematic, download it manually.

When you have it successfully downloaded, just drag it to the Vortex mod window where it says Drop here.

If you paid for Vortex - someone ripped you off. Vortex is free. You can pay for faster downloads - but not required.

Identify what path and files you feel were downloaded to your C drive. That does not happen if you have it configured correctly.

Thanks both. I think I may have tried to Apply the DL folder setting while a DL was in progress, because I think I remember an error popup. It was rather late at night :-) and there was that invisible DL going on for hours.

As of this morning, the massive invisible DL for the textures patch seemed to have thrown a DL-failed error, and the file itself (the 7z that was slowly but steadily growing last night) had disappeared. OK whatever. While the app was idle, I made sure to do the Apply of the DL folder location, and yes, all the DL files obediently hopped over to the new location. Perhaps things don't work consistently when a big DL is in progress? And the failed DL took multiple hours, so I may have been pushing a lot of app buttons while it was in a weird state.

Thanks for the tip on dragging manually DL'd files if the app-linked DL fails.

I paid for Vortex because the modding community for this game is so cool, and I felt like supporting the devs... yah coulda got it free -- but if I pay for it, then even more people can get it free, that's kinda how I look at it.

I'm using a list of recommended mods from UploadVR: https://uploadvr.com/must-skyrim-vr-pc-mods-make-tamriel-even-better/

The article seems to indicate that these mods will work with SkyrimVR. My goal is just cosmetic (prettification) not so much gameplay hacks. I have an AMD RX5700 XT (Sapphire) with 8GB VRAM so am hoping I have the horsepower to render the modded game. Guess I can subtract mods if it's janky after enhancement :-)

Now I'm looking at this SKSE thing that some mods apparently depend on, and wondering (a) whether the download site is safe (my browser says Insecure) and (b) whether it plays nice with the VR version.
