AdmiralCain
Hello everyone. If I've posted this topic in the wrong section of the forum please do tell me so I can see about correcting it. As the title implies, I'd like to try creating some mods of my own. I haven't done any modding before so this is going to something of a learning curve. Basically I'd like to get an idea of what programs I need to download and learn to use. Video tutorials, text walkthroughs, any good sources of information would be appreciated. I guess a sort of Idiot's-How-To would work best since I'm not very computer literate. As to the sorts of mods I'm looking to create they'd be mostly aesthetic. Loading screens, posters, billboards, that kind of thing. At this stage I'm not going to be overly ambitious with intricate armour meshes and the like. I might try making different version to be compatible with 3 and TTW as well as NV. I guess that's about it. Thanks for reading.
MrShersh
Hello! If you want create only retextures - you need to know only Photoshop + DDS plugin from Nvidia (I recomend Legacy version of this plugin). Bonus, you can use BSA unpacker or download like mods you wanna create (Loading screens example) and just replace their texture in Data structure (If you dont know where location loading screen textures in default game without mods). So you to know basic or middle level skill Photoshop for your begining. If you dont want to create a new high quality models of billboards. If it just textures like image on billboards, so again - only photoshop and dds plugin from Nvidia. BSA Unpacker work like win rar archive or 7z (very simple). Hope I was answer to you.Sorry for my english, friend. Edited March 8, 2021 by MrShersh
madmongo
Most modders prefer GIMP to Photoshop, since GIMP is free and Photoshop isn't. Paint.Net (not the Paint that comes with Windows, but it is a free download) can also edit dds files, but isn't anywhere near as popular as GIMP. As MrShersh said, if all you want to do is replace textures, then this is all that you need. If you want to create new objects that are retextures of existing objects (new posters, new billboards, etc), then you'll need to learn how to use the GECK and NifSkope. The GECK is an absolutely miserable toolset, but fortunately creating new objects like these is fairly simple. Creating meshes requires knowledge of 3d modeling. Most modders prefer Blender since it is free. 3ds Max can also be used, but the version that works with FNV is not free. If you get into 3d modeling, specific versions of the tools are required. Lots of useful info here, including links to tools and all kinds of tips and tricks:https://wiki.nexusmods.com/index.php/Getting_started_creating_mods_using_GECK
AdmiralCain
If I've understood correctly the necessary programs are- nvidia dds plugin, legacy version- GIMP- G.E.C.K.- NifSkope and these will work with Fallout 3/NV/TTW Thanks for the wiki link. Can you recommend any good video tutorials? I get the feeling visual examples will help a lot
ashtonlp101
If you're at a university, you might be able to find on their library website that they either have discount codes for Photoshop, or offer licenses for free to students. But as Mongo said, GIMP 2 is the best free option. GIMP 2 actually has a very similar interface to Photoshop.

Can you recommend any good video tutorials? I get the feeling visual examples will help a lot I believe the latest version of GIMP supports dds files without requiring a separate plugin. Fallout 3 has its own version of the GECK. The GECK for Fallout New Vegas will not work for Fallout 3.TTW is a Fallout New Vegas mod, so you will use the FNV GECK if you want to create or edit TTW mods. All you need is:GIMPFallout 3 GECK (only if you want to make Fallout 3 mods)Fallout New Vegas GECKNifskope
