Version dropdown confuses me

Hi everyone,

I'm running Vortex (updated today to 1.4.8 ) managing Skyrim SE (aprox. 315 Mods, most of them Textures).

I've never noticed this problem before, so I was wondering if it's due to an update and thought I'd just ask here.

I've been re-installing my mods last night and when I started Vortex toady I noticed that some of my mods (I'm using "Noble Skyrim" as an example) had been... merged(?).

Meaning, Noble Skyrim's SMIM patch had vanished and the version of Noble Skyrim had suddenly turned into the little dropdown I usually get when I have different versions of the same mod installed.

I haven't, though.
When I checked, I realised Vortex had sorted the SMIM patch into the same row and I had to choose which I wanted to enable.

Has this something to do with mod and patch having the same NexusId and the same version (5.5.0)?

Or am I overlooking somthing?

As a last resort, I re-installed the patch and now it has it's own entry in my modlist again, but I just noticed that other mods and their patches are affected as well.

Maybe someone can giv me a heads-up.

Thanks!

PS: Logfiles don't seem to throw out any error's related to this.

That version drop down has been there for quite a while.

I find it very convenient, because Vortex always displays the version currently installed.

So say you have Version 1.01 of a mod installed, and you download Version 1.03 of the same mod.

Now, this is how I use the Version drop down

So 1.01 is showing, I know I just downloaded 1.03, if I click the drop down I can see

Mod A 1.01 (-)
Mod A 1.03 (-)

So I click the Screwdriver Icon the (-) icon next to Version 1.01 and select REMOVE. (You can choose just to REMOVE the mod, or to completely delete the mod)

After 1.01 is uninstalled I then click on the notification bell where it says that I just downloaded 1.03, and I select INSTALL

The drop down makes it so easy to swap version or uninstall old version and install new versions

Firstly, thank you for answering and taking the time to explain as detailed as you did.

Secondly, I already knew what the dropdown is supposed to do.

In my case, though, it's doing something entirely different: it doesn't show me two versions of the same mod (to take your example 1.01 and 1.03).
Instead, it gives me the mod and the patch (belonging to the mod) which have the same version number.

So I end up with;

Noble Skyrim 5.5.0 (-)
NS SMIM Patch 5.5.0 (-)

Ah, that's because of the way the Mod Author 'updated' the mod

Most likely instead of releasing a whole new version, they updated the ESP, or a couple of files and only uploaded those.

Which can cause problems with Vortex depending on how they name the file, or the metadata that Vortex gets from the website that can fool it into thinking you've got it installed twice

Okay, so it's indeed a problem with the version/files.

That's a shame - so I have no choice but to leave the version for the patch empty, don't I?

Otherwise it will happen all over again, the next time I check for updates.

Thank you again, for answering. :)

Unfortunately.

I ran into the SAME problem, where I downloaded a huge mod, then the modder updated the ESP, and uploaded just the ESP, and when I installed the "PAtch", because of how it was named etc, Vortex thought it was a completely new version of the mod, so it removed ALL of the associated Meshes, Textures, Sounds, BSA etc, from the old version of the mod, and only installed the Update ESP.

I had to name the mod something completely different so it wouldn't get grouped/merged with the actual mod and getting treated as the same mod.

Once I did that and installed the new ESP, then vortex told me there was a conflict between the two ESPS with the Same name, so I told the new ESp to LOAD AFTER the old one, and that was that
