Joesimeri
I was wondering what peoples opinions were on the weapon mod Sword of The Ancient Tongues. It's number 6 most endorsed weapon mod on the nexus with near universal praise. That's quite a feat for a weapon mod including only one weapon design and with only a very basic craft-menu-add implementation. To me the design is very meh. And that blade, it's so ridiculously thick. It is mind boggling to me. What's the appeal? I'm not trolling and truly don't understand it.

There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, Than are dreamt of in your philosophy. So, you don't like something, why do you need people to explain to you, why YOU don't like something? I would definitely call this trolling mainly because you're calling attention to the fact that you don't like something and you want people to talk about it, instead of just moving on to something else and just ignoring it, you're trying to make controversy over it. The sword is super detailed and looks nice in that fantasy way lots of people enjoy. It might be a shocker to some, but many people enjoy fantasy because it isn't realistic or accurate to how the real world works. In this case, we are looking at a 7-year-old mod that came out three years after the games release when amazing weapon mods weren't super common. My point being, that there are plenty of mods I don't understand the appeal of, such as ones that turn the female body into some enormous monstrosity of only two parts, or animé mods but I just move on, I don't make threads asking WHY, because there's no point in me asking. I do like unrealistic fantasy weapons like Kit Rae's designs and the swords from the conan movies and I'm not all about realism. You said that it was released when amazing weapon mods weren't super common. Do you think it's amazing personally? The weapon does not scream "WOW this is amazing, top 6 weapon mod all time" to me. The design is very basic. It's not bad. As I said it's just meh. I'm questioning what the appeal is because it's ranked so highly. Looking into things a bit more. It looks like the author was spotlighted during the Valve-Bethesda steam workshop pay-for-mods controversy. I think internet content virality might be the best explanation. Something not based on what's the best. It's about what got the spotlight at the right time. I was wondering what people's opinions were on the weapon mod Sword of The Ancient Tongues. I understand that personal preference is involved to be sure. I can understand that someone could like this weapon design. I'm just confused by how many people do. It makes me think there is more to it I'm missing. I would like to know what your opinion is on the design. Do you think it is deserving of a top 10 weapon mod of all time ranking? I'm just confused by how many people do. It makes me think there is more to it I'm missing. I would like to know what your opinion is on the design. Do you think it is deserving of a top 10 weapon mod of all time ranking? I wouldn't use it, because I play SSE, and don't install weapon mods that only has one weapon in it, if I use a weapon mod it will be a collection of weapons. As far a s my opinion as to whether it's worthy of the top 10, that's not for me to determine, everybody has different tastes, and apparently enough people like it enough to warrant it's position there. DoctorKaizeld
No, I don't personally like it. It's too outbof place and like HTR said i avoid one weapon sets that don't add the weapon to any lists. My meaning on the mods release is that old popular mod are generally seen more than new ones. The sites default to "top endorsed" organization, and most replies to mod suggestion requests on the forums get the useless response of "look at the top endorsed". This leads to the problem of older mods getting seen more than new. Hence this mod getting number 6.
Joesimeri
I understand your meaning DoctorKaizeId. I think I agree with you. There is a snowball effect with virality of content. Something that is seen by more people is more likely to be shared by those that have seen it and surfaced by content algorithms based on popularity. Since mod communities are most active around the time of a games release or the release of DLCs, mods released around that time are more likely to be seen and endorsed. I agree HadToRegister that it's a matter of differences of taste as well. I would argue that timing is the more significant cause of it's placement though. There is also the factor of continued self advertisement to push views to older mods. Like I said I looked into the author more and they got a bunch of attention during the payed mods controversy. In addition to that they were an active TF2 workshop creator. This would bring more attention to there profile and past work. I wonder if the nexus should implement an option to list mods by weighted endorsement ranking. The weight of each endorsement given would be based on the total number of endorsements given on the entire mod site over the 24 hours prior to it. The formula being endorsementWeight = 1 / totalEndorsmentsPastDaytotalEndorsementRank += endorsementWeight
