SpeedyB64
You need to remember that the open source and closed source software developers are very different. Closed source: Millions of dollars, hundreds of people, a huge corporation. Open source: A guy in his basement. Closed source is a company while open source is a community who help and cooperate with each other. Open source stuff almost always plugs into other open source stuff to run off of its resources. This is why before you get something do detailed research first. BTW. I suggest that you never under any circumstances get Linux.
Skree000
there is no argument that maya is a better program hehe actually there is big 'argument' on the comparisons between the two programs... but to get into details we must first ask ourselves what aspects of the software we are comparing. 3dstudioMax seems to be more powerful for unwrapping low-polygonal game modelsmaya specializes in insanely high-poly assets, so the UV editor pales in comparison to Max when it comes to 'the important stuff' for game model unwrapping. (vertex by vertex fine tweaking is Max's specialty, since the program was first made to specialize in low poly models, not uber-highpoly movie models) Maya is definitely more powerful than max when it comes to Sub-D modelling and nurbs surfaces. That's what maya was made for after all.Max's sub-d is good, nurbs seem tacked-on... but maya blows it away. Maya's interface with shelves and menus within submenus is only very intuitive for advanced users and power-users mainly in the film industry.Max's interface is more WYSIWIG with few hidden menus and almost every feature is not only more intuitive to newbies but also more logical :) The single-most important and crucial button in Maya (Delete History) is located within 2 submenus and must be remapped to a hotkey by each and every single person using the software. This is not an exception, many crucial or key elements of mayas workflow seem hidden, stashed away if you will, within multiple menus or options windows. By contrast, Max's Reset Transform/Scale, Reset X-form are buttons clearly visible on the sidemenu by any beginner. For newbies Max seems to be an easier start. Maya gives even veteran users of XSI and Max tons of trouble since it was designed with a different purpose in mind, and only within the past few years has been retooled to function as a viable Game-art utility, not just a film-art one. DigitalEternal
I agree, but i wasnt comparing maya to max, rather to blender. I know max is always been for games and maya for film, i personally have always perfered max, probably because ive done more game things, max needs some plugins to get it up to par with some aspects of maya but overall i perfer the interface. Anyays, both are too bloody expensive so ive had to slowly and painfully teach myself blender, Im just hoping work continues on it because there are a few inadiqacies that need to be repaired, and i pray they see the light and give it a real GUI someday lol
