If im not mistaken in Oblivion you dont need to hold magic in hand so +1 to Oblivion again.

Nostalgia. A few people find Oblivion more tasteful, but the vast majority whom prefer Oblivion over Skyrim do so because of nostalgia.

Not in all cases. I know for sure that I enjoyed Oblivion much more than I enjoyed Skyrim.

It's because Oblivion felt more like an RPG than Skyrim did. Skyrim, to me, has far less role playing options than Oblivion, which is why it feels that every character is the same. Oblivion had far more options to create unique characters and that's why a lot of people liked it more.

Graphically I love Skyrim. I love the size and breadth of the game. The storyline is a bit less interesting for me and I don't find the setting quite as compelling, but I still prefer the game.

Morrowind was before my time in the Elder Scrolls and I'm too much of a graphics snob to go back to it :-(

If I had played Skyrim before Oblivion I would have been tired and bored with Oblivion, so it's a matter of Oblivion being the first one. People who played Oblivion might go with it because they want the same experience from Skyrim. Skyrim beats Oblivion in its environment's art design, Oblivion's storyline is more engaging than Skyrim IMO. The quests in Oblivion are 1000X more interesting and varied, but the level system is better in Skyrim. I would recommend Oblivion to anyone who hasn't played Skyrim rather than someone who has. One thing I liked about Skyrim was to let me specialize my character however I wanted compared to oblivion where it felt like I was trying to become a master mage, a very stealthy thief and a mobile tank at the same time. But Oblivion wins because of its better characters and quests.

Skyrim, while I did enjoy oblivion one problem I had with it was; for being the capitol of a empire....why the hell does it look like they just to roam and slammed Africa down ontop of it? I had both games modded pretty much right out the box, and can tell you very little about the vanilla of either outside of quest and storylines. Well I guess I played Oblivion a little longer they skyrim, but I modded the hell out of oblivion when I started modding it.I still to this day haven't had a fraction of the mods running on skyrim I did on oblivion.

Skyrim. I never played Oblivion before Skyrim. So graphically, it's of course as step back. Part of what got me into Skyrim was how polished it was. It's visually, very impressive. While I can appreciate great gameplay without impressive visuals, I couldn't get as immersed into Obilivion. I gave it a shot twice, but just found myself completely unable to both times. When I tried to pretty the game up a bit to make it look, graphically a little closer to skyrim, it just flat out crashed to desktop with ANY animation or graphical mod. On a brand new Alienware m17x, that's kinda bad. So, Skyrim for me.

Oblivion is better. It had a better main quest, better faction quests, and better side quests in general. The world of Cyrodiil was better realized too. The cities actually felt like cities, and the environment offered quite a bit of variety.

Skyrim on the other hand is prettier to look at, but the UI is horrible and the quests were very much stinted. However...I am very fond of the whole nordic/viking theme which is why I'm still interested in the game. Plus Skyrim has controller support which means a lot to me. After using a mouse and keyboard in the CK....I really don't want to be using one in-game.

So in conclusion Oblivion is better but right now I'm more interested in Skyrim.

At the end of the day the best thing Oblivion had to offer was some pretty good story arcs although I will say I miss those waving trees and grass.

The gameplay itself was only decent imo with nothing special to offer. If you skilled up correctly then you win and roflstomp the game and if you didn't then the game roflstomped you. The leveling system was seriously broken resulted in hundred of balancing mods.

The one thing though that I really hated about oblivion was the fact that they gave us a third person view for the first time yet offer NO support for it. The animation was terrible and we couldn't use a crosshair...

Skyrim improves on everything that was wrong with Oblivion and it shows. It exploded with populariy when it was released and even surprised the devs themselves "they didn't expect the hype and sales it got" as they have said a few times in reviews and such. I play primarily in third person view when I play skyrim because hell its the first Elder Scrolls game to offer such an amazing third person view.
