I want to make a personal mod of a small town, which i would probably need to put into it's own worldspace and just travel to.

I haven't really done modding before, so i am just taking this one step at a time, starting with making a new world space and adding building to it and editting the terrain and such.

My only problem is i can;t figure out how to make a new world space, or how large and such.

Is there a tutorial that can help with this? Or anyone willing to give me a synopsis of basic steps?

So I take it this is the general "quick question and answer thread" as well?

I'm still a real noob (started my first practice vault yesterday) and I ran into three problems, that I couldn't resolve by skimming through the tutorial. Any answers or pointers to answers, would be appreciated.

1) Is there a way to eliminate the flickering that occurs when two floor or wall tiles overlap? What's happening there? I'd like to create some hallways that run diagonally to another, and I cannot eliminate all overlap.

2) When creating static collections, I always just end up with a big red exclamation mark.

3) Is there a way to rescale an object only in one direction (aka make it taller but not wider)?

Not really a quick question/answer thread...

but regardless...

1. No, you still need to move the object slight above or below the other object. Say if your floor is at 600.0 and you have some paper on it you need the paper set to 600.5 to eliminate that flicker. Same goes for all things. I happens when two plans occupy the same location.

2. Not sure.

3. No option in the GECK. You can duplicate the item and it's NIF file. Using NifScope you can alter the scale on the x,y,z axis and save it.

best to start a thread for these types of questions instead of posting here (/doing a search in the forums as its already been covered).. although i guess it does somewhat relate to the intended purpose of this sticky...

regardless; here are some places to start learning blender.

http://www.blender.org/education-help/

(look under the docs & videos section)

http://blenderartists.org/cms/ and http://blendernation.com

(many of the questions you will inevitably have, have already been asked and answered on these forums)

http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Blender_3D:_Noob_to_Pro

(this is a great resource)

http://www.youtube.com/user/super3boy

(some youtube videos on various functions)

also check out this thread, there are more links in there

start slow! the learning curve (at least imo) is an exponential one, and there is a LOT to learn

also something that may help you understand the process is opening up models from the game or other people and seeing how they are put together

best of luck

I'm having trouble making a mod where a new item can be purchased for the safehouse. I'm doing the HD00QuestScript, which makes it so the items appear in the house after they've been bought, which requires a "Doonce#" command. I'm using Doonce12, but whenever I try & save the script it tells me doonce12 is an invalid command. Any way I can validate it?

I like to help people, but there becomes a point when people stop helping themselves. I think some would agree that it is easier for to make time to help someone if we know they have tried very hard to solve the problem themselves. Regardless of skill level, there will always be a time when we all run into a snag and we help each other out. However, it is hard for me to take someone serious when they ask questions that basically ask for someone to give them a step by step guide how to do it - entirely. Unfortunately, too, links to tutorials and help are hard to keep track off and place in an area easily found by all.

The problem with experience is you always get it after you need it. Modding is all about trial and error. There might be a few geniuses that have mystical mod making powers, but most of us just keep trying until we get it right. The only thing experience does is help you know ahead of time what is possible and what isn't.

G.E.C.K. - Getting Started

Bethesta GECK Wiki

Here you will find 70% of what you need to know to make your own interiors and find information about every option in the GECK. It may not provide a tutorial for each thing, but can help you weed out nonsense and focus your talents. The search feature does work and there are some good links.

Bethesta Videos

You can find tutorial videos that will help you get going quickly. Most of what they cover is simple stuff, but knowing the fundamentals can help you rule out things when you run into problems.

Oblivion Tutorial Wiki

I don't know anything about Oblivion, but from what people say... texturing and modeling works about the same for both FO3 and Oblivion. So you can find some good reference there that will help you in your Fallout 3 endeavors.

Elder Scrolls Contruction Kit

The Elder Scrolls kit is very similar to the GECK. Navmeshing is different, but for AI, scripting, and most other options are almost identical. If you can't find the info you need on the GECK Wiki, you can find it here.

-------------------------------------------

Tools & Utilities

FO3 Archive Utility

Extract & Create BSA files. These files contain the games raw files - meshes, sounds, textures...

Nif Tools

If you want to edit a mesh, like changing the textures... get NifScope

Nvidia DDS / Normal Map Plugin

Allows you to use Adobe Photoshop to open and edit DDS files. The plugin will also create Normal Maps.

EGM File Generator

This nifty tool creates the critical file needed to keep head wear correctly located on people.

I went back about 12 pages and I will try to go back some more. If I happened to miss something, PM me the link and I'll add it to this post to keep everything in one spot rather than spread out over pages. Like I said, I want to make it easy for people to find info since searching tends to ward people off.
