  1. I'm having to mod fiends to have better loot for the later levels, but yes definitely a staple. Nightkin remind me of the scripted "scary" events in games like the Resident Evil Series or Doom. Unlike in OA, it's a bit more intimidating to have a huge super mutant decloaking and charging you with a big weapon. Running Ferals also tend to give one a nice little rush.
  2. PC Gaming isn't for the faint of heart. I grew up on consoles myself, and the biggest factor that comes to mind is ease of use. With a console, while you lack the ability to "hack" and modify, you also have a lot fewer headaches. Console games often are better polished as not only are they easier to test (no software/hardware conflicts and all that), the end user has little recourse when a problem arises, so the end product must be as stable as possible. Thanks to the internet, newer consoles can be patched rectifying errors that were missed. PC gamers on the other hand tend to be more knowledgeable about their systems because the nature of them requires them to be. It's impractical (and effectively impossible) to test everything on the myriad of configurations. While I feel PC games offer a better experience overall, its been the driving factor in my technical knowledge from all the problems I've come across. Games like Fallout and Fallout 2,Doom, Tie Fighter, Half-Life, Starcraft, Diablo 2, and Command and Conquer are what got me into PC Gaming. Ironically enough, those games were far less troublesome to get running stable. These days, newer games tend to push the hardware limits, so being unfamiliar with PC gaming will generally lead most people to frustration. When I was doing tech support regularly, a common issue for far too many people is that their computer didn't meet the minimum requirements. Truth be told, you want to be as "above" minimum as possible for the best experience. As a gamer, desktops are generally recommended because of they're far more upgradeable. Laptops can achieve or surpass most desktop setups, but are more expensive and you won't be able to upgrade key components (like video and power supply) to keep it up to date. Your typical brands generally aren't ideal for gaming, and most PC gamers build their own rigs from "scratch". There are brands like Sager and Falcon Northwest that focus on gaming hardware, but they're also costly. Alienware used to be a big player, but since being purchased by Dell their reputation has fallen a bit. Keep in mind that the hardware between consoles and pcs is pretty similar - a pc with "equivalent" hardware to a console wouldn't perform as well because the software isn't streamlined for the purpose of gaming. However, PCs with the right setup can have superior performance - as said above the difference "will boggle your mind".
  3. Easiest way to make these "legends" tough is to not use the sniper rifle. Note that everyone who "complains" they're too easy are generally sneaking or running around with a sniper rifle, the most versatile weapon in the game thanks to pure DT design.
  4. You really should think to be more courteous in your responses. Also, putting an empty threat in a readme doesn't make things all fine and dandy. Lastly, you really lose any clout when you can't form sentences without grammatical and spelling errors (1337 speak aside).
  5. I always thought sway was a dumb mechanic as its often over-emphasized in gaming. (I still think a slight sway is reasonable, as to mimic breathing or something). There is a mod, browse the cheats and god items section. But aside from the sway, you still need to worry about your gun skills as they impact damage and spread.
  6. Last person who had this issue had to turn off fellout mod or something. Check your mods, something has an issue. If you're not sure where to start, disable all and start from there ;)
  7. PC Mods (aside from the basic save game edits) can be used on XBOX - BUT that requires physically modding the XBoX which is something you don't want to log in to Xbox Live with. As far as I know, its an issue of software - you wouldn't expect a PS3 game to run on Xbox or vice-versa type deal. I may be off or entirely wrong on that, however. Performance wise, if you have to ask the difference between xbox and PC, you are probably lacking the computer hardware to run it on PC as "nicely" as it would on a console like the 360. High performance PCs will outdo the consoles in both aesthetics and performance, but can also run into far more problems. People tend to pick the PC for the sake of its modding as you can't quite get the same experience on the consoles. While there are controls that can be purchased to use on the PC, I think most PC Gamers would argue that the WSAD system is superior for the FPS style gaming, as you can't be nearly as precise with a controller as you can with the mouse/keyboard setup.
  8. Outside of Vats, you can just set the kill cam setting to off. In Vats, you're needing to modify settings.
  9. I find it hard to believe that FO3 runs with no issues whatsoever =P Granted, it wasn't NEARLY as problematic as FONV has been for me. I'm kinda surprised that was the card you picked up, as you should have had a better soundblaster equivalent in the same price range, especially since that chipset is commonly included on boards. As For the FFDSHOW, its actually an issue for FO3 too, but depending on when you install your codec pack it may automatically add the exe to the disabled lists. Also, might want to make sure you're not expecting too much performance out of the audio and tone down the settings for at least troubleshooting purposes.
  10. After going through that link I listed after, pretty sure FO3 doesn't have the install limit but I wasn't very thorough glancing through it. When I first started using Steam years ago, I thought it was amazing (at the time) and had amazing potential for changing the ways people purchase games. Retail has plenty of limitations, and by utilizing the internet to distribute product, you resolve at least several of those issues. Like how Apple changed the way a great deal of people purchase music, Steam had the potential of doing the same for games. I think a lot of my own personal frustration with it is that instead of encouraging the user to purchase on-line, it tends to do the opposite. I know I personally would rather purchase a game retail (assuming the option is available) as I'm not only going avoid steam-related issues (unless it requires it or something similar like Microsoft Live) as well as have a physical back up should I need to reinstall for whatever reason. For multiplayer games, Steam tends to integrate "seemlessly" in most cases. But this current trend of requiring on-line connections for games with a strong single player aspect does not appear to be benefiting the PC Gaming community. Command and Conquer 4 is a prime example of how relying on an internet connection to play a game can cause a multitude of issues leading to bad experiences for the customer, especially when that customer has little interest beyond the single player campaign. For games like FONV, steam issues only exacerbate user frustrations with the game as they're already problematic from the start --- While PC Users have the benefits of mods without having to mod their own console, console users don't have to worry about drivers, software conflicts, hardware conflicts, etc, and get better support. Unlike PC users, console users can't create mods/modify settings and/or software to resolve their issues, but that also makes them more dependent on the Game Company. In either case, console gaming becomes more favorable for most people. After all, they don't have to worry about upgrading video cards or miscellaneous parts to make it work, they invest in the console and it lasts for several years - PCs don't have that luxury. Not sure what would be left of the PC gaming market if Consoles started taking over the MMO arena. Luckily we've still got Blizzard. It's kinda sad to see how a game as old as Diablo 2 seems to get better support than some of these newer releases.
  11. Glad to hear you've got some redundancy. I've been in a few home offices where there was no backup at all, and by the initial post it did seem likely that was your case - but glad it isn't. As for the remapping of keys, first thing that comes to mind is the keyboard utility software, although as I don't bother using my own, you may not have had that installed either. Also, as it can take some time for certain machines to initialize even a usb keyboard on reboot or first attachment, its not unfathomable that the keyboard and/or software had a bit of an issue and needed a reset.
  12. See the fallout wiki page for details, it will be very helpful for this and other issues you'll probably run across.
  13. Really? I thought your downloads were unlimited. That's what I've read everywhere. Must have been another game then. Just started searching since I finally got curious enough to take the time to look. http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?p=17037164&posted=1#post17037164 For the computer savvy user, it means more steps and a bit of a hassle. For the average user, it can mean nothing (as they'd never notice) to headaches galore depending on the person and their tech support help.
  14. Try removing all the NVSE files and disabling mods to see if you can get to the main screen - if you're not getting even that far, first thing I would check for is any program stealing focus from the gamebryo engine on initialization, like a web page open or even an antivirus notification. Then its on to driver status, namely video, updated doesn't always equal more stable. Have any codec packs? Like K-Lite? FFDSHOW (audio and video) should be configured to be disabled when the FONV exe file runs.
  15. If you can't get to the main title screen without it crashing (and all mods disabled) its EXTREMELY unlikely its a mod causing the issue by that point. First thing I'd check is if anything is stealing focus away during the initialization process, as the gamebryo engine is pretty picky about that, like a web page or utility program, or even virus protection notification.
  16. Could just be that your batteries died, transmitting a bad signal that was not interpreted by computer leading to crash. As your main computer, you really should consider a back up of some sort - if you were troubled this much for a keyboard, what about the more serious issues that can arise, like a hard drive failure? Having the netbook won't prevent data loss if there's no back up of the main, which one should have for any significant documents/data.
  17. Do you have any codecs installed? Like the K-lite pack? FFDSHOW (both audio/video) needs to be configured not to run when the FONV executable is running as there are conflicts. Also, consider lowering sound settings for the sake of troubleshooting.
  18. Steam was great - in the beginning. Being able to download games you purchased was very nice, as even if you misplaced/lost your original install discs, you didn't have to replace them. Things have changed quite a bit since those days though. Can't remember for sure which game it was, (probably FO3) that users who bought on Steam were now limited to 5 total installs EVER. With games that problematic often requiring several reinstalls during troubleshooting, not even taking into account data loss or hardware failure, it ended up punishing users instead of rewarding them for purchasing through them (as opposed to retail box). While Valve releases have been much less problematic, not everything released on Steam is. While all companies are entitled to protecting their work, as I've seen it the DRM that's been implemented does more harm than good. It doesn't prevent piracy, and while it acts as a deterrent, its far more likely to cause problems for the general consumer. Troubleshooting certain games is difficult enough as is, then compiling them with DRM issues lead to poor if not painful experiences for the customer. For anyone who's ever spent time doing actual tech support, its hard enough to help customers who are "technology-challenged". While I've never felt guilty explaining that someone didn't fulfill the system requirements, having to tell them their game no longer works and must be replaced (for whatever reason)... you already know the customer is very unlikely to ever buy a product from the company again. I hate buggy games. While its fun to be a beta tester, a lot of that is because you're getting access to a product that has yet to be released. When you feel like you're beta testing a "finished product", that fun is only replaced with frustration. Tack on DRM issues on top of that, if the customer wasn't pushed to his/her limits already, they have been now. Basic DRM (ie secure-lok, securedisc) seemed to be far more practical. The majority of folks would simply lack the technical understanding to break it or know what is needed to break it. Those who manage to bypass the security measures will have the knowledge to bypass the security regardless. By preventing the average user from simply burning a copy to give to a friend, you've salvaged a possible sale. On the other hand, if you had a frustrating time just getting the software to install because of DRM, let alone play the game.... instead of salvaging a possible sale, the result is a negative experience. Considering the popularity of social networking sites, that one bad experience is shared again - when other folks chime in with similar bad experiences, the piracy that may have been prevented is overshadowed by honest customers refusing to buy product or future products. You'd think a business model would desire a loyal customer base. Then again, I used to think greed would also keep the financial industry from doing anything to risk its collapse.
  19. I recently finished another play through a few days back and prepped some save files for whenever the DLC hits PC. After running through New Vegas Bounties (which I recommend highly), I've found myself a bit stumped as for what to hunt. What are your favorite targets? Cazadores - If they weren't found in numbers, I wouldn't mind going after these on a regular basis. While I can handle them, with my low avg fps its not the most pleasant experience. Deathclaws - After the Junction and the Promontory (and practically everywhere they're found) the only natural respawn I get of them is at Dead Wind. While I still get a rush when one starts charging (especially if I'm reloading), they get kinda old. Vipers/Gunslingers - I could probably just modify some leveled item lists to make them more interesting, but as they stand now they're pretty pathetic after the first few levels. Mercs - really wish there were more of these, albeit more of them geared like the one that drops the YCS and have them actually roaming the desert Great Khans - probably the closest thing to a target I'd like to kill - but I just like them too much to slaughter them, I'd feel guilty Brotherhood - As much fun as it would be to waste the bunker, I just can't bring myself to do it. The only thing I miss about the enclave was that it was like fighting BoS without the guilt. Geckos - while animal friend makes all but the fire breathing friendly (not sure why they aren't normally included), they stop being fun once you've got decent weapons Ghouls - If they aren't feral, I'm not gonna kill them, they've been through enough. Just wish the hostile ones had better loot to make them feel more rewarding. Legion - probably just need to arm them better before the dam with the Geck, the whole bringing a knife to a gunfight makes them all too easy prey. NCR - better loot, but the soldiers already have enough problems. Robots - wish there were more, preferably respawning - but in the Mojave Wasteland one would expect them more a rarity Lakelurks - make me wish mirelurks were around, I miss how much harder their head/face was to hit. Mutants - Marcus is my boy, and the Mountain ones know better than to attack me, so hostiles are too few and far between. Like how they feel meaner than in FO3 tho. PowderGangers - not enough respawning hostiles (without modding), loot is pretty weak for the later levels Boomers - while tempting since they did try to *ban me* up, enjoy watching the napalm drop in the end battle Radscorpions - while pretty scary for the poorly equipped, that's about it Fiends - after the bounties, they're a lot less fun to kill (for me at least)
  20. Would make sure to configure/disable FFDshow (both audio and video) when the fonv executable runs. (really should be done for FO3 too) Make sure you've got nothing else running in the background (no apps, no web browsers etc, even minimized) anything that would steal focus away from the window during the initialization process. Are you getting any particular errors with details?
  21. Honestly the armor isn't worth farming, too bulky and in generally lousy condition - better value to weight ratio in the weapons/ammo. You sure you aren't killing these guys in sneak - if an npc group is friendly, and you kill one of them while hidden with a silent weapon (ie silenced sniper) they will not go hostile. Super mutants on Black Mountain are friendly if you fix Rhonda - but if you attack one openly (not hidden no silencer) they will no longer be neutral to you (unless something is broken or modified by mod) Do you have jury rigging? When repairing equipped armors, it can lock in the factions of whats worn until another like faction item is equipped/unequipped. NCR, Legion, BoS, White Glove, Great Khans. Are you traveling with any companions? One would be especially friendly in the BoS Bunker.
  22. When you start using texture and mesh mods, you go beyond just dragging and dropping files into their respective folders. When I first started using them, I experienced exactly what you had described. You need to setup archiveinvalidated (basically a dummy file so that the game will use the new textures). The automatic install wasn't working for NV when I went through the process, so I had to do some ini editing. If you're really not comfortable in doing such, I would suggest either taking the time to learn (nothing heavy duty just text editing) or avoid using mods that would altogether. You've basically got to add the archiveinvalidated!.bsa to the data folder and modify the ini slightly - the directions should be found in the same place you get the file on the nexus. I'd also recommend using the NV Fallout Mod Manager to help ease the startup process.
  23. First thing that comes to mind is FFDSHOW - going in the config (both audio and video) and adding the fonv executable file to the disable list so that FFDSHOW doesn't start.
  24. I really hope English isn't your primary language as your post is a little hard to follow. The game should be patching automatically when connecting to steam as long as you're not in off-line mode. Bugs is pretty vague, as the game is buggy in nature. Even with patches, broken aspects remain. What are your system specs and Operating System?
  25. What is your sound card? Honestly, if it's incompatible that leads me to question the rest of your setup. I've been able to run games below system requirements, but certain aspects can't be ignored as they're required by the software (like certain shaders for graphics for instance). Sound is rarely an issue unless you're trying to use a basic integrated realtek chipset at the higher settings usually. If you're on a desktop, unless you've got some finicky high end sound card, you could always replace that as you'd have plenty of options for a variety of budgets. Notebook/laptop - short of an external soundcard setup like that offered from Soundblaster... not much else I'd also check if you've got any special codec packages installed - ffdshow has some issues when running alongside FO3/FONV
