  1. Was thinking about this recently. May have come up in discussion before, but I don't know that. Reilly's Rangers has this high-paying contract from an unnamed client, to map out the Wastes. So, who is the secret paymaster? Doubt it's the BOS - not really their style, I think. Unless a map to ALL of DC's high-tech goodies is the end result, I doubt that the Outcasts would lower themselves to dealing with Wasters for so long. Talon Company is openly hostile to RR, so probably wouldn't be handing them any jobs. Slavers might like to know where their best centres of supply and demand might be, but would probably handle the job themselves, their own way. Raiders just wouldn't bother. An underling of Tenpenny's MIGHT organize something like this, in anticipation of possible future orders from their boss. Could be a total unknown with an agenda of their own, sure, but what? It is possible that RR themselves don't know for certain - the Mystery Paymaster could be using go-betweens and cut-outs to deal with them. OR RR could be sworn to secrecy as part of the contract - they blab, no pay. Entirely plausible for a mercenary group, however principled they are. My own thought is that maybe the paymaster is someone in the Enclave's intelligence-gathering section (surely it exists, even if badly-run and under-resourced). The aim being to secretly update and improve the Enclave's data for the DC area before their Big Push starts. I've got no proof of this particular theory, unless there is some major detail I've missed someplace. Other thoughts?
  2. I know that most (?) of this stuff has already been found and used by modders, and/or is detailed on the FO3 Wiki. But I thought I would put the following link up for consideration. Some very interesting bits and pieces to be found, certainly. http://tcrf.net/Fallout_3 Unlikely, but one never knows - maybe there is still something that everybody (so far) has missed.
  3. Unless there are any other changes you made to the game, mods would seem to be the likely culprit. An incompatibility issue maybe, OR something simply placed incorrectly? Simple way to check. Disable various mods and run the game to see if the problem persists. If it does, try disabling several other mods and repeat. If at any stage the problem is no longer there, obviously one or more of the disabled mods is somehow to blame. Comes to that, first try switching off ALL your mods, and run the game plain vanilla. If the problem is still there, I'd say it was something you did to the main files. Unless you can figure out what that alteration was, your simplest option may be to uninstall / reinstall.
  4. http://fallout3.nexusmods.com/mods/16468//?
  5. Yeah, I'd second that. Note that there already is a mod where the slaves resettle the place once you wipe out all the Slavers, but options are always good. For a REALLY ambitious modder, maybe have a number of different ways that PF could be resettled, rather than just 'Slavers / Evil' and 'Ex-Slaves / Good'. Much would depend on the LW's choices / methods, including (maybe) who / how / where additional support is gained - Tenpenny Tower, Pitt refugees, Raiders, Rivet City, the Caravans, etc.. I dunno, maybe even give those dang Aliens a shot. Accepted, all this is very likely too tall an order, but thought I'd just toss the idea in.
  6. Isn't there a console command to specifically close dialogue boxes? Guessing that using this may have undesirable effects, but if it is all about closing dialogue ASAP ......
  7. A Youtube video I remember seeing (A year ago? Two years?), linked to "a" mod on the FO3 Nexus (seem to recall the title 'Tribal Armor' somewhere?). Basically, it was a set of quite well done dance animations of FO3 characters + settings, to part of Rockwell's 'Somebody's Watching Me' - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7bQwin3Vv0k No biggie, just that I recently recalled it, wondered where it had gone and made a couple of unsuccessful searches. Probably disappeared into the Great Beyond as many such things do, but if anyone knows if it is still up and where, please let me know.
  8. Welcome aboard. There are a LOT of very good mods for FO3 (including what you mention), and a fair few threads about favourite mod lists. Look at some of these other threads, is my main suggestion.
  9. That would be my recommendation as well. Plenty of retailers here in Australia still have a few of the GOTY (cd) set on the shelves, and I am sure we aren't unique in that sense. Good luck.
  10. Actually, no. What you say has already been dwelt upon here a time or two (except for the DA reference, good comparison that). Noting also that nobody here has been saying "Heh! Stoopid Bethesda, they got it SO wrong!". Creative decision on their part, sure. But many here STILL like the Green Look better, often because it does seem a more accurate depiction of what would be found. Plus, the desert look has been seriously seriously over-used anyhow. As for the pristine cars you mention, once again we fall back on the 'Late 21st Century Tech dressed up to look like the 1950s' argument. After 200 years of exposure to the elements, any vehicle we can think of (whether car, truck, bus, plane, motorbike, railway car, etc.) should be piles of rust flakes - with maybe a few still-recognizable bits'n'pieces scattered around. But what we find in FO3 is a great many of all these things somehow remaining (fairly) recognizable, tough enough to use for construction or shelter, and (in many cases) ready-to-explode. Quite extraordinary, really. But in the final analysis, this is every bit as much a "creative" decision as the blasted desert appearance of the 'canonical' landscape.
  11. I did. Post #14. There was even a response or two.
  12. Don't see the need, personally. In FO3, Chems are things that, when taken, have some effect on the user (ie. drugs). How / why should alcohol be treated any different?
  13. For first-time playthroughs, this is VERY handy if you get stuck or just want to know all the options: http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Portal:Fallout_3
  14. If the canonical look is your thing, that is entirely up to you.
  15. Why not simply rename the Data folder? That way you can have 2 copies in your Fo3 directory at the same time without have to copy/paste the entire folder every time. Yep, could certainly do that. Was also thinking that this could be the basis for some kind of utility program. Give users quick access to a list of different FO3 "worlds" to play in, rather than having to Mark One Eyeball Check which long list of mods are actually in place. Just a thought, anyways.
  16. Please bear with me. Not sure how doable this notion is (or how well I can communicate it), but here goes. Fo3 has a lot of mods, of which many are not necessarily compatible with each other, stylistically or otherwise. There are times when one may just feel like playing in a different world (ie. different set of mods), but that can involve a lot of switching around and fiddling. For example, if I suddenly want to play a plain vanilla game for a change, I simply use FOMM to uncheck all the extra stuff and then carry on. No worries. But if I want to switch my game between (for example) an Obscurum / WH40K mash-up and a Greenworld with all the extras, it gets messy - especially if I want to keep BOTH groupings for diferent gamesaves. The simple brute force option (as far as I can tell) is to have separate copies of the relevant 'Data' files, and physically swap these around in the FO3 folder. Wondering, is there a better way?
  17. Absolutely have fun with it - that's the primary reason to do anything like this. Based on my own tastes (such as they are  ), I suggest not making the story TOO much of a downer (if I want to be depressed, I can watch the news). But it's all up to you - your project, your rules.
  18. I think there is no simple answer there. Simply reading aloud all the dialogue stuff will appeal to people who don't know the game, but may just irritate / bore some of those who already know the game. Maybe do a bit of both, at least to start with - both read-aloud and narration. See how well it goes (and what the reactions are), then adjust accordingly. For myself, I prefer to play Good Guys. Not Mr Pure, but killing everything and generally being a d##k never appealed to me (not judging those who prefer to play Evil - you play your way, I'll play mine). I think also you get more interesting / entertaining RP situations by being (mostly) Good. Someone doing something similar to what you are thinking about - http://www.youtube.com/playlist?annotation_id=annotation_612532&feature=iv&list=PLms8rbPjpUi3Uq0eJZ3XS1pP2vIb2Gbs6&src_vid=rdPaaJNUZi0 Good Luck. EDIT: I guess one really obvious question to ask is, what mods will you use? This project may be a very very good way to showcase your favourites.
  19. Do NOT bump threads. It is very specifically against forum rules, and for good reason. If nobody has answered your question, it is probably because no one has an answer.
  20. I hear the aliens were very keen about something called a "Illudium Q-36 Explosive Space Modulator".
  21. Might do better posting this in 'Mod Requests'.
  22. ANOTHER thought for character options / origins is to go the 'Buck Rogers' route - ie. someone from the Pre-War world who awakens from suspended animation to find themselves in the FO world. Thinking of it as a series of short introductory scenes set Pre-War, vaguely like what we see in FO3 and the LW's life in the Vault. Then the War starts, and the character has to get to a specific locale whilst all hell is breaking loose. S / he climbs into the sleep chamber (or whatever), and the next scene is waking up a couple of centuries later. Guessing this particular intro might take up too much resources compared to the rest of the game. An interesting idea though.
  23. Heck. Much as I love FO3 but, on my old system, if I could get only one CTD per 80 minutes play I would have counted myself lucky,
  24. @MurkedYourPosse: If you didn't already know, note that there are a number of YouTube tutorials on using the GECK and for other aspects of FO3 modding. Good luck!
