  1. All of the defaults are pretty bad, but they could be better with some portions, like some mods have shown. I kind of like the punkish/street looking tats, but the NUSA flag is kind of dumb. I can't think why any variation of V would have it. Streetkid isn't 6th Street. Nomad is a zero non citizen and loves independence. Corpo is a sworn enemy of Militech types (at least starting off).
  2. For awhile there, I converted more, but many have finally gotten an official port (for example, Deadly Dragons). Now I just have a few small things privately ported over. "Dragons Shout With Voice" - https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/35286 Various little fixes.. You can get many in SSE mods already, but I find them to be overkill. Like a lot of the little mesh fixes in Kryptopr's Weapon mods (Better shaped Glass helms, etc). I just port over small individual fixes.
  3. And what's even worse is, there are folks out there that are trying to tell us that some of those absurd things should be accepted as 'normal', and embraced. Obesity being right there at the top of the list..... Yep, society is being dragged down a step at a time, at an ever increasing pace. That one confuses me. Most of my criticisms of the West are because of bad top-down decisions. But obesity acceptance seems to be the product of people on the bottom. Something of their own making for a change, but bad all the same. I sympathize, because I know a lot hard work is cut out for some if they want to get healthier, and maybe they're just frustrated, but they shouldn't give up. No one said they need to do it overnight, but they shouldn't give up. And I think the enablers are far worse. They don't care at all, and then demonize those who do care.
  4. The West destroyed itself already, over a hundred years ago, with WW1. Especially the European West. And if that wasn't enough, WW2 sealed the deal for good measure. America might have a better fighting chance to stave off dramatic decline, but even that is unlikely (but I'd be happy to be proven wrong). America themselves has become enslaved in the post war years to usury and Wall Street, consumerism, increased erosion of constitutional rights, a vapid yet influential nobility in the form of Hollywood, senseless rebellion against classical values and art, etc.. The list goes on at the absurd things Americans have somehow gotten used to as "normal". It's not quite a "Fall", but a subtle demoralization of society. Just to use a "consumerist" label myself, I would say we're all living in a "Matrix" of sorts. And like the Matrix, you can wake up to it or remain asleep and not even realize just how demoralized you really are. The only reason why I say America is still better off than Western Europe is that they didn't kill off the majority of it's strong, male population (nor did enough of them have kids). You can erode all kinds of cultural values, and still recover with a dedicated few who care about preserving society.. but if you kill your own warriors and young men, then you're pretty much done for.
  5. Hmm... interesting.... At this point, I've installed and then uninstalled about 170-180 mods. The only thing I see that gets left behind (for *some of these mods) is associated folder entries and a very small "_folder_managed_by_vortex" file if the folder has a subfolder (said subfolder(s) being empty following un-installation, btw). This is exactly the same sort of leftover clutter I've seen from uninstalling programs in Windows itself since I began using Windows back in the early 1990s, and the same sort of thing I used to see back before windows, when I was running under DOS, starting in the mid 1980s. Granted, I've never mixed using NMM and Vortex or MO2 and Vortex, so perhaps you garner more substantive garbage from trying to mix the two management systems. I just use one mod manager at a time. And I like I said, I think Vortex is fine. It just has this quirk of wanting to leave it's mark in game folders. That's only really an issue to me with mods with lots of loose files and subfolders. But I've mostly alleviated that by rebuilding many mods with BSAs. At this point, only a few things late in my load order still have loose files (like DynDOLOD) so I'm cool for now.
  6. I think Vortex is fine. I just dislike some of it's design choices. It likes to touch every folder and file related to Skyrim, like making it's own INI files in the Document folders (which I prefer to manage myself) and leaving a trace file in every single mod related folder called "__folder_managed_by_vortex". So even when you decide to uninstall mods, you still have to manually remove each individual instance of these files afterwards. It's a pain in the butt if you installed a mod with lots of files in the Mesh or Texture folders especially (where there are dozens of subfolders). No other mod manager was ever this intrusive and couldn't clean up after itself this poorly.
  7. Just mod to your heart's content, but backup a SkyrimSE.exe in your main game folder, just in case Beth bumrushes people with one of these updates. SKSE tends to update fairly quickly, but for those few days they may not, you can always resort your Skyrim to this old SkyrimSE.exe backup in the meantime. I've updated before...I was just curious if there were any particulars I should be aware of to avoid "hiccups" during the updating process. I've been playing with steam in offline mode since the 1.5.80 update back in June (and fwiw, I have 249 mods currently installed). regards, As far as I know, that's all. As long as nothing updates at all, it should be cool ??? I will be updating from 1.5.80/2.0.16 to 1.5.97/2.0.17, and all the SKSE dependent mods. With all due respect, I don't understand your reply. It's as if you didn't read a word I wrote. I understand perfectly well. None of this matters if you turn updates off on Steam.. then the SkyrimSE.exe is never touched. Your game is in the same state as it has always been, in that case. It doesn't matter what you run, what mods you have, and what SKSE version is working for you if your SkyrimSE.exe is never auto-updated on Steam. This is your main point of concern, which is alleviated by simply turning updates off. It's only people who leave it on that get in trouble and where all of the complaints come from. Hope that helps.

  12. Oh, I just meant that all RPG storage records are in a database of sorts, from a coding standpoint. And they never had a shared/universal one. That would have been great, but everything related to inventory was a hassle in the original game. They couldn't even be bothered to put smelters in all cities, making you travel from Solitude to Whiterun to make ingots. Adding convenient time saving features like shared inventory probably didn't cross their minds when they were already brutalizing players in other ways. :tongue:
  13. No, it was definitely a hassle in the original Skyrim. But I do believe there was a mod that did some kind of unified inventory database or something.
  14. I don't think I have a gaming addiction per se. It's just when I find the one or two that grab me each year that make me addicted. It's always some form of interactive storytelling that does it for me (be it RPG or Adventure, with a variety of choice making mechanics). I first started gaming in arcades, but the game that first truly grabbed me back in the day was Defender of the Crown (C64). Later on, the Wing Commander series was another, on 386 era PC. WC is still the perfect blend of arcade action and interactive storytelling to me.
  15. I heavily modded on an i7 1060 16GB RAM once (now have moved on). You'll be fine in 1080p, for sure. Possibly 1440p will be fine too. Don't bother with 4K. But then, hardly anything does 4K well, to be fair.
  16. That Toy Soldier one looks cool. Never heard of it. You can probably convert it yourself though. Just resave the assets in the new Creation Kit and optimize whatever nif files in there. As for Deadly Multilitation, I wouldn't bother. It's old and very script heavy - and made before a time when script optimization knowhow has improved.
  17. Personally I don't even bother with xEdit. I used to, but I'm not convinced that it makes much difference. Then again, I kind of do "vanilla +" mod setups, so it's not exactly demanding.
  18. I found that the best way to learn is to find a similar mod that does what you want (like with different assets/areas), and then see how they did it. Not always helpful though, depending on how unique your own idea may be.
  19. I think your analysis that it is no longer a priority is correct! It explains a lot! And it isn't the easiest OS in the world to install. Re 'stability' agreed but as I no longer use a computer for anything other than fun and if I'm using the 'spare' to experiment in any case, I don't think that's a concern. You're right - it isn't as if there's a problem over finding alternatives! :laugh: Thanks for the insights! @shumkar - Agreed! There is always generous help! If you're really interested in experimenting with Linux, check out ClearLinux. Made by Intel, no less. It's benchmarked as the fastest distro out there (at least on Intel cpus), but it's also polished for a young distro. I've only used it for desktop stuff a little, so I couldn't say how well it performs for gaming per se. Although it does have Steam in it's "app store" thing.
  20. If this game wasn't amazing to you back in 2011 (and you didn't complete it then), with no mods, I'm afraid that any new mods won't drastically make it amazing either. I could be wrong, but that's my two cents. Mods are great and fix some flaws, but yet, there's only so much you can do with them. The truly big improvements (at the engine and systems level) that we all want to see will only come from Bethesda themselves. I can only hope that TES 6 delivers here, and they aren't recycling Gamebryo/Creation engine/etc.. Skyrim is basically the best they could do with the basic tech they had for a decade, as it was. It's amazing that mods have taken it this far. We're still talking about the game in 2020. That said, I like the site www.tesgeneral.com as a general guide. It's an oldschool site, but still updated with helpful picks in each category. Just surfing the Nexus can be overwhelming.
  21. Valve are slackers when it comes to their own distro (kind of like Half-Life 3 heh). They had greater ambitions at one point, but the Steamboxes didn't really take off, so now they're left with a distro that isn't their top priority. Like others are saying, just get your favorite flavor of Linux and install Steam on that. Anything Ubuntu/Debian related (like SteamOS is) will work just as well. edit: OTOH, since SteamOS isn't as experimental and rigorously updated as others, that makes it more stable at least.
  22. I've converted quite a few myself. Only would warn against converting external/building/landscape type mods for now... at least if you plan on generating LODs. ESLs don't seem to play well with LODGen/DynDOLOD.
  23. Pretty amazing that they'd update the game itself just to make way for a house mod. lol. Imagine if someone with an even more robust city or landscape mod had that power in their hands.
