How to find things in a huge building - SOLVED!

My technique for my whole life in any maze (or in this case a building in Fallout 4) has been "follow the left wall". But you miss things. And stairs confuse matters.

Another problem I've had is what to do with all these caps I've accumulated.

So, combine the two. Breadcrumbs! I enter a building, the first room has three doors. Pick the left one (best to always pick the left one, or you can end up missing areas if you randomly go through the building and cut off two sections). Drop a cap at the door as you go through it. Drop a cap at every door you go through as you progress through the building. When you find a door already with a cap, don't go through it, you've been that way, pick the next door from the left instead. If all doors have caps, turn back, then when you arrive at the previous room, find a door without a cap. If that has caps at every door aswell, you've finished.

This will make you traverse every single room in the building, so you will find all loot, all enemies, and that elusive holotape/whatever that you must find for the quest you're doing.

To drop a cap you must enter the command "player.drop f 1" into the console. You can assign that command to a key using FO4 Hotkeys at https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/11664/

If you're a skinflint, I guess you could then repeat this, but instead take a cap instead of dropping one, then you get them all back. But that would take twice as long.

Do your companions stop and pick up the caps you drop? :D

That might even be possible. I have the "loot detector" mod so they could..... just a minute..... are you being funny? If they picked them up I'd lose my way! My slave might do that to get back at me - I got a naked slave from the Depravity mod - every time I trade stuff like weapons with her, my character says "I wanna change your gear" and she says "we both do" - why would anyone hate being naked? Maybe it's the gunshot wounds.

Now I want a mod that lets you drop glowsticks for this purpose ...

I always wondered what the point of those was. Torches (sorry flashlights, even thought they don't flash) are better in almost every situation. I guess if you know you'll never get them back they're cheaper or something.

Ever notice glowstick have a hole at one end? Right there is a clue for their real intended use.

Not to use to see, but to use to be seen.

Connect that to a trip wire, and you get instant feedback that someone (or something) has entered a very specific location - that you know exactly where it is.

Less clandestine uses would be to simply hang at the outdoor latrine, so you know exactly where to go to relieve yourself at 0:30 in the morning. Or, to simply use them to mark the staircase when the power goes out - like it did in Texas this winter - for days.

I've seen a glowstick once in my entire life, and I was about 8. So I didn't know there was a hole and I don't know what you mean by its intended use.
