Saints Row 4 modding.

Saints Row 4 will be getting full mod support, not only that but it also looks like Saints Row 2 will be getting it as well. Idolninja, the guy behind the Gentlemen of the Row mods just asked for SR4 file information to help modders and to his surprise they got back to him with the promise of a full SDK, oh how things have changed from the nickle and diming of THQ.

Sometimes it does pay to ask.

A point of clarification though... What was mentioned was releasing mod tools for SR3 as a trial run for SR4. Given how people probably aren't going to even look back at SR3 once the forth is released, it may not go very well. SR3 also has a number of technical issues to deal with that made modding a challenge... Including having all the DLC contained in the base game but locked away, adding complications to adding new content which doesn't inadvertently add content from a "DLC". Having had the chance to play SR2 and look back on SR3 with new perspective, I'm even more doubtful that much will come of this if they continue with any similar practices regarding game content.

Given that the plot of SR4 seems to completely do away with rival gangs, police, military as the antagonistic force in exchange for Aliens and a matrix like environment... It just feels like another step in the wrong direction. Nevermind the trope of every series eventually ending in space just before it crashes and burns.

The trial run is to get them so the community can use them, they have already confirmed support for SR4, the early alpha releases for SR2 and SR3 are already out, this is the plan moving forward with SR3 http://www.saintsrowmods.com/forum/threads/volition-update-to-srtt-modding-sdk.2830/

I think how SR4 turns out depends on how much of the development was done under THQ, if interviews are to be believed it was their interference that resulted in the mess that was SR3. The main story line was gutted, it was supposed to revolve around Shaundi, the death of Gat hit her hard and the story had her going from hippy chick to what she is in SR3, THQ didn't like it because survivor guilt was "too dark" for the game. SR2 characters didn't reappear because originally rather than blow up Gats funeral, Killbane let off a dirty bomb in Stilwater than killed all of them, this was also changed because THQ didn't like it. Gats death was supposed to be a big thing but that also was cut for being "too dark", THQ were doing everything in their power to dumb it down.

Wow jim that actually sounds like a far richer story and something that tops SR2 in over the top events, also gives you an idea on what STAG was ment to be. Not some petty vilian that they were in SR3. I guess THQ wanted both to avoid subjects like this as it might feel to close to reality and also to make it stand out against the more serious GTA V.

I don't know what THQ were doing, the fact the company went bust suggests they didn't either. I guess we'll find out in a couple of weeks, I'll be buying it for the modding anyway, if the game is good then that's a bonus.

Personally, I think going for a more light hearted attitude was one of the few saving graces of SR3. If you look past the short story, the DLC, general lack of past characters, it really isn't that bad of a game. The "boss" in SR2 just seems... meaner from what I've seen so far. In SR3, he's... I dunno, more on top of things, relaxed, and having a blast while committing open homicide. Basically, realizing how ludicrous their exploits were and just saying "F it, let's just have fun".

GTA in comparison just feels too angsty and dark... Almost to the point where there isn't much left for them to do to push the edge further.

There's always room to push the edge further. Add a few internet fetishes and kittenocide.

Yes, but that wouldn't necessarily make for a better game or interesting storyline.

SR3, as half-assed as it was, still ends up telling a good storyline about a group of criminals who got so caught up in their fame, needed to be taken down a peg, hurt in a profound way, just to rediscover the meaning in what they do and to stop being corporate whores.

Naw, for me Saint's Row 3 was about crashing a cessna into a kiddy pool, jumping out wearing a panda suit, and then slaughtering 50 Submissives with a gigantic chainsaw. And all the while being attacked by aliens that are actually film crew, and backed up by the gigantic mal-formed clone of a dead homicidal maniac.
