Why all the SW prequel hate?

I agree, it's the same thing with the Interplay/Bethesda is better at Fallout argument.

Though I do think Lucasarts sold out with the ridiculous animated series.

But the prequels were some of my favorite movies growing up, I remember how obsessed me and my best friend in 5th grade were with the series. Everybody else was all about Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh, I guess we were the only cool kids. lol.

I think it's just a personal thing to be honest, I never really liked any of the Starwars movies, as i prefer the Old Republic setting much more then the New Republic and Rise of the Empire eras. That's not to say they are bad however, but, I personally feel that the Starwars lore is a complete mess once you get pass the Old Republic. There are novels that were way better then the movies, I have a particular one in mind, if i can remember which series it was, I'll put of a link to it. But it was awesome because of its realism which reminded me of Isaac Asimov Foundation Trilogy. Even though there was a few things that bothered me about those books they were in my opinion better written then all of the movies combined. Even though it was wrote around one hundred years ago.

As for why people hate the prequels, its not only the prequels, there is a lot wrong with all the films, some are better then others however. I have heard people list everything from Jar-Jar Binks, to the Midi-Chlorians, Anakin and Padmes terrible connection. C3POs annoying character, sometimes even R2D2's pointless narrative, and all make excellent sense. Because you can get enjoyment from something with out it actually being good, which is fine because there is absolutely nothing wrong with it, all one needs to do Twilight Saga or countless other examples. Which are debately bad but still have a huge following of loyal fandom. I think the main complaints that people are actually trying to say is amateur; amateur writing, plot, story, theme, settings, effects, characters, etc.

I will sum it up with a saying that you probably don't know. You can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear. Now I grew up on the original. I saw the very first Star Wars: A New Hope at a DRIVE-IN movie theater. I sat on the top of the car in my footy PJs. I was Darth Vader for Halloween 2 years running. I had a light saber (which back then was a glorified flashlight.) I love Star Wars. I...LOVE....STAR WARS.

However...just like my saying. You can put all the CGI in the world in it. You can try and try to make it into something it is not. I don't care how amazing the CGI is or isn't (and I don't think it is all that really but lets say it is) all that will not change the fact that the story is lacking, the plot is lacking and most of all...the characters are lacking. That is what made the original three movies for me. I was convinced that somewhere..in a galaxy far, far away that Luke and Leia and Han and R2...all of them were really out there. If I could just travel far and fast enough I could help them fight. I felt Luke's pain when Ben died and I laughed at C3P0 and R2 and all their arguments. They were real to me and THAT is what made those movies great. The prequels....I didn't feel it. They weren't real....yeah the pod race looked awesome....the planets and all the clones looked amazing...but I didn't BELIEVE any of it because the characters all fell flat. I can look at the old movies and suspend my disbelief when I see one of those little threads holding a ship up...I can forget I ever saw it because the characters and the story was compelling and held me and still does. The newer movies were going through the motions.

Sad...but true. I don't hate them. They didn't destroy my love of Star Wars...but I am sad sometimes because I waited so long and they could have been great.

To give a slight plus point to the prequels, they did seem to get better film by film.
RotS>AotC>tPM
but yeah they seemed to have too many dull character and seemed to introduce alot of stuff just so they could make toys of them.

Also that clone wars series was awful (I watch all of the first 2 seasons). It pained Anakin and the clones too much as heroes.

Maybe it's not the movies, but the time between them? I guess sort of what Hardwaremaster was saying how amateur the movies are in general. I personally love movies and some shows that have that feeling of 'cheesyness' - District 9, Cloverfield, Super 8, 2001:ASO, Doctor Who (any episode pre-Matt Smith), Cabin in the Woods and the entire Star Wars saga. Not everyone is a fan of these, but they ALL have an 'A-' feel to them. Not Asylum amateur, though.

Star Wars, with what seems like a huge budget as a series is very poor quality in comparison to other similar movies. Sure, I guess it the original trilogy was 'ground-breaking', but then again Dawn of the Dead was considered that too. And with what we have today, something like that wouldn't even hope to make the big screen. They were great, for their time. Really the only merit that they have (as a series) is the legacy that was left behind. I can imagine Star Wars becoming closer to a sellout like Transformers in the next ten years.

[...]just so they could make toys of them. [...]

And yet people don't complain so much about Transformers, when it seems to have been milked dry multiple times already.

One party does something, it's a bad idea and every mention should be treated as blasphemy unless it's a boycott, but when a different party does the same thing it's the best idea that was ever thought of.

Some people already see it as a sell-out (I'm not saying it is though).

By "just so they could make toys of them" I meant the character designs looked cool but they had no personality or really contributed to the plot. e.g. kudamundi, kit fisto, plo koon, Darth Maul and even General Grevious (the last two even though main villains had no personality or back story)

Wasn't the original transformers TV show made after the toys? So it's not exactly the same transformers was always designed to sell toys while Star Wars was not. Though they did have figures for the originals like Luke Skywalker with wet hair so the prequels can't hold all the blame.

Yes the old cartoons like transformers, he-man, gi joe, tmht (as in hero turtles, when they were good), thundercats...the list goes on, were all toys first and the cartoons were made to sell them. They were just 'glorified' toy commercials but it worked and got them notoriety they have held for a long time, and sometimes like transformers they will revive them to cash in on a new generation (I hear he-man will be making a return).

This is the reason, I personally think people hate the Phantom Menace, and by extension George Lucas. http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys/smiley-happy006.gif

I don't believe that Star Wars Episode IV was ever designed for children. It was the Space Opera Fantasy of a thirty year old with a idea and a goal in mind. Even Empire Strikes Back was still moderately adult in comparison. Return of the Jedi was the chapter that definitively saw the move where promotional toys became an engine of reason, and creatures like the misguided Ewoks took center stage. George Lucas has made the statements that they who grew up with the original trilogy hate the prequels, kids who grew up with the prequels hate the original trilogy, and kids who came to the saga with Clone Wars don't like anything else. There may well be some truth in his words, but whichever way you look at it, as Lucas got older his target audience continued to become younger and younger and younger. To me Anakin Skywalker will never, ever, be believable as a young Darth Vader, not with the fake romance that he and Padme had. Those two simply had no chemistry together for him to turn into the type of character he that did.
