DooM (DOS)

Yep, how could I forget a major part of my college life!!! All that time "wasted" in the lab playing doom 1 and 2 with friends. Ahhhh....those were the days.

I had no idea Doom was getting a Windows makeover. Looks awesome. I really like the weapon pack.

This is extremely cool. Where can we get the mod?

Those sounds and graphics certainly give me some nostalgic flashbacks... not sure I could play it now though. I've been spoiled by more modern games. :pinch:

I feel that way too sometimes, but I still play Doom's classic version anyway. There are sourceports like jDoom and gzDoom to help it out in the looks department, and mods like the one in the video above that even give it a total makeover. And where gameplay is concerned, I often enjoy things simpler rather than more complex. TETRIS is a fine example of a simple game that I love. Space Invaders on my big brother's hand-me-down Atari was the first game I ever played and loved, so sometimes simply shooting hordes of alien mosters is enough for me.

The Doomsday Engine allows you to play the classic first-person shooters DOOM, Heretic, and Hexen using modern technology, with hardware accelerated 3D graphics, surround sound and much more. It runs on Windows, Unix, and Mac OS X operating systems.

The Doomsday Engine is an open source project that is available for download free of charge. The only thing you need is the data files from the original games — Doomsday takes care of the rest.

Thanks for the info. I have the Doomsday Engine, also known as jDoom, but perhaps others don't know where to get it. What I was actually asking (and I apologize for not being more specific) was: where can we find the mod shown in the video, which replaces the weapons and monsters. I visit some of the Doom community sites, but don't recall seeing this particular mod. It's possible I've simply overlooked it. Again, thank you.

I think Doom was like the first game I ever played (that or Duke Nukem or maybe Redneck Rampage haha)... My dad had it and we played it all the time. I have never played Doom 2 though now that I think about it, but I have played Doom 3 and I quit after playing for about ten minutes and still have not played it since then. Actually I still play Doom, just on my Xbox 360 not my computer. I love this game! ;D

My first experience with doom was doom3 the reckoning (i think it was called the reckoning-it had a title).

I liked those days, cuz then my mom took it away from me cuz i was a bit too young to play it.

Then i startedd to play doom for nintendo nintendo 64...somehow i like the old ones more, i dunno why

Because Doom 3 and Doom 1/2 are in two totally different genres. DOOM pretty much defined the fast-paced action fps genre, the kind you can hop into and start blasting away without worrying about anything except...blasting away. A genre which, btw, seems sadly lacking these days.

Doom 3, on the other hand, "tripped over itself and forgot it wasn't System Shock," to borrow Yahtzee's words. It may be a worthy game in its own right (if you like that sort of thing and have played System Shock to death) but it fails miserably as a sequel to DOOM 1/2.

If you like DOOM, check out Painkiller, and by check out, I mean buy it. It's pretty much guaranteed you'll like it if you liked DOOM, and it's by a lesser-known development house that deserves support.
