demidekidasu
So, in the quest to find the Riften Skooma dealer, I found this bloke called Butcher in Cragslane Cavern. Now, this bloke is one seriously unfair NPC. I've been trying to kill him all morning and every time it goes exactly like this(apologies for the darkness):CLICK TO VIEW VIDEO Bear in mind that I even dropped the difficulty down to "Novice". Looks like I'm going to use TGM before I end up smashing the monitor or something lol How on earth does one defeat this guy in a "legit" manner? Hyacathusarullistad
I've always found Cragslane Cavern a difficult dungeon, even at higher levels. Not entirely sure why. It's one of the very few places I have to make multiple attempts before finishing.
majormittens
He's a really op npc but I guess it balances out seeing how you get to purchase the property in Riften after you finish the quest. He's a real b&@*$, though. The only way I beat him was using poison, skill enhancing potions and whatnot to take him down, I recommend taking him out first whilst you're still not visible. (If you have a stealthy character obv.) The rest are pretty easy.
demidekidasu
Thanks for the replies. I completed the mission in the end but didn't get the right to buy property...Is it dependent on the civil war like with the Solitude and Windhelm houses? My character has not started any of the major questlines yet, I've deliberately avoided them this time through so far.
Hyacathusarullistad
You should be able to ask the Jarl if she needs help with anything else. She'll tell you to help her people. Do some favours for people around town, and then head back to the Karl and she'll make you Thane. You should be able to buy the house from there. IsharaMeradin
You know as many times as I've done the buying of the Riften house, I don't ever recall this Butcher character. I'm sure he was there but was not a memorable fight by any means. Then again, I played on adept without any combat overhaul mods. It might have also been that I used stealth archery and the guy went down before reaching me.

It might have also been that I used stealth archery and the guy went down before reaching me.That's exactly how I'm playing it. In the video I was using a quarterstaff from Immersive Weapons because the bow proved useless, despite her highest combat skills being archery...My character was level 9 at the time, perhaps this is a factor? You should be able to buy the house from there.Definitely no option to ask that...I do know what you are refering to though as I've done it with other holds in previous playthroughs, but this is the first time I've ever gone for the Rift thaneship. I recall her mentioning something about titles before I left for the cave. Odd...Do I need to meet the person in Riverwood or speak to Balgruf first, perhaps? I've not even done the former on this playthrough yet, lol. Or do I need to join the Thieves Guild first because of Maven Blackbriar's obvious influences over the Jarl? I'm litterally just going around the Rift doing all the minor side-quests I can find as I've never spent much time there before. Not particularly interested in any of the campaigns for now... -EDIT-After doing some ninja-Googlery, it seems it's a somewhat known bug with the thaneship/house being unobtanable. Sigh, Bethesda, sigh... Thanks for the help nonetheless. Edited September 23, 2013 by demidekidasu

Maybe. I think I was a higher level when I did the Riften thaneship. Can't be certain as it was many months ago.
majormittens
I was actually around level 20 when I encountered him so I'm not sure if its level-based but I know for a fact that he's made to be stronger than the player character. And regarding the ability to get the property, you should help some npcs in Riften, get ingredients for Ingun etc.
demidekidasu
you should help some npcs in Riften, get ingredients for Ingun etc.Yeah, after doing more Googlery it seems you must do all the quests before there is even any mention of the house or thaneship. I'm going to give it a go. The fetch-quests are about the only quests I've not done yet...Unimaginitive quest design at its best :P Thanks for the replies, again. P.S.I'm starting to wonder if either my game is bugged or my character is just hands-down rubbish. Last night I decided to go tomb-raiding and came face-to-face with several Draugr Deathlords(!!!) in a single room. My character is level 12 right now so you can imagine how that played out...Ugh -.-
