Tanner85800
If my steam library, mod staging folder and download folder are on an external drive. E in this case. And I intend to use that external drive on my new PC (itll be the same drive letter so I think the paths should be fine.) Do I just need to install vortex and then put the app data/ roaming in the same spot. (Same user folder etc.) then launch vortex? I havent downloaded steam on the new pc yet either. Would I need to purge and redeploy mods if the game itself is staying in the same steam library?
rmm200
I will share some insights - but don't follow anything I say blindly. Only you are responsible for your results. Any Steam game, do what you need to do to have Steam set up the Windows registry correctly. Have Steam validate the game in it's new location. At least you know about Appdata. The entire Vortex directory there is important. You should be able to copy it over - but only Tannin knows for sure. If you keep the mod staging directory on the same drive as the game, and the drive letter does not change - you should be OK. Same for the hard links. Purge followed by Deploy is always safe. Not Purging before a move can be deadly. Know what you are doing. Good luck. Let us know how it goes.
Cecilia56
Yeah, that'll work. You'll need a SATA data cable, and you'll need to locate an available SATA power cable in the working computer. Plug the drive in, boot the computer, et voila, your drive should be there.25-Jan-2018

But heres my assumption as to the process, let me know what you think? So. Purge mods. Move external hard drive to new pc. Launch game on steam on new pc. Install vortex. Replace app data. And insure that the staging and downloads folders are set the exact same. Redeploy. Am I missing anything? I purged and got steam to recognize the drives. Ill move forward tomorrow. rmm200
Sounds good - to me.I would like to hear some other opinions chime in.If this all works - it would be good to add to the Vortex Wiki.
AugustaCalidia
This sounds good to me as well. I have successfully moved my Vortex installation several times, following the steps outlined here by rmm200. Heed his warning about purging. Purging before moving is absolutely essential to a successful move. What are you doing with your "My Games" folder? rmm200
A user who will remain anonymous had some questions about the procedure as documented: " I was just a bit confused by the order. Do I install vortex first and then import app data or do I import app data first and then install vortex?" I would say install Vortex first, but does it matter? Recommendations?
