Worst injuries?

I don't know why but I'm always fascinated about painful injuries.

So, why not create a thread where everyone can share their injury stories and we can all sympathise and cringe and stuff?

I've got 3 stories:

1. This happened when I was 5 years old. We were staying at a motel which had these massive bunk-beds that had 3 beds stacked on top of each other. Being the cheeky little sod I was, I went on the top one. Sadly it didn't click that I was a sleep-walker, and in the middle of the night I fell out of the bunk (which would have been about 8 feet high), hit the ground, broke my arm and bruised my head. But, since I was only 5 years old, having a broken arm got me attention so I was happy.

TL;DR - fell out of a very tall bunk-bed and broke my arm.

2. I would have been about 8 when this happened. My friend and I were riding out bikes down the gravel driveway and doing sharp turns so we could skid and slide (hooray for safety). Now, you can probably guess what happens next; I go down and attempt to slide, but this time I fell off my bike, landing knee first on the gravel and scraping all the skin off it. Needless to say I cried for Mum and I had to walk back up the driveway. The worst part was cleaning it, because looking at all the oozing flesh that was my knee and wiping the cloth over it was horrifying.

TL;DR - came off my bike on a gravel road and scraped my knee raw.

3. This last story happened last year. We have a pool out the back, and we also have lots of beach gear like wake-boards, knee-boards, body-boards etc. Well, we had the knee-board in the pool and we were swimming. I decided it would be intelligent to jump on the knee board and "surf" across the length of the pool. So, I had a big run up and jumped onto it: I went about 3 metres without falling off, and I actually stayed on long enough for it to sink. But, this is where it went all wrong; the knee-board went nose-first underwater, and I jumped off backwards. Due to its angle and buoyancy, it came flying back up and smashed me in the face, splitting my nose and almost knocking me unconscious. Needless to say that knee-board died later that day. I've got a scar on my nose where it happened, though luckily its only visible in sunlight or when I put pressure on it. At least I now fit in with my siblings though - my sister has 4 long scars on her forehead due to a horse-riding accident, and my brother has light scars over his face from an accident with boiling water when he was a baby. I guess you could say we're a bit of an accident prone family.

TL;DR - got hit in the face with a knee-board and split my nose.

So, those are my stories. If anyone wants to share their painful experiences, go right ahead.

When I was 2, I took a grenade shrapnel to my left shoulder, severed two bones and it still clicks when I raise my arm.

At the age of 4, I impaled myself onto a piece of metal sticking through a driver's seat on a wrecked jeep, no permanent damage though.

At the age of 5 I was in a car accident, broke a rib and right arm. Also cracked my skull and dislodged my left wrist after falling from a wall.

When I was 7, I got impaled on a fence in front of my neighbor's house, I had a concussion from a home-made rocket and broke my middle finger by sticking my hand into a concrete mixer.

When I was 8, I broke two ribs falling down the stairs, dislodged my right shoulder for the first time trying to catch a stop sign while driving in a car.

At 9, I broke my nose in a fight, broke my right leg and skinned my back falling off a bike on a steep dirt road.

At 11, I dislodged my right shoulder for the second time trying to jump into a moving car, got ran over by that car afterwards resulting in a broken right arm as well.

At 12 I had my first fall from a motorcycle, cracking my skull again, was wearing a bunch of bandages on my head through the whole summer.

At 15 I was stabbed for the first time damaging my left kidney, and I ended up with two missing teeth in a fight.

At 16 I lost another tooth, got a lacerated left leg in a crash with my bike and got impaled on my neighbor's fence again, breaking two ribs as well.

At 18 I was shot for the first time during military training, some idiot forgot to pull the safety and dropped the rifle, resulting in a 7.62mm hole in my chest, one rib was removed.

At 19 I got shot twice in Afghanistan, 7 bullet holes from a machine gun + one from a rifle, also I got stabbed in my leg twice, had two ribs and a piece of my right lung removed due to being torn by bullets.

At 20 I stepped on a mine with the back of my boot, resulting in the back of my right leg being covered in shrapnels, I now fire up metal alarms in the airport, also fell off a bike and dislodged my shoulder for the third time, skinning my arm as well.

This year I managed to have an entire nail sticking through my foot, had a broken little finger on my right hand and removed another tooth due to having it smashed in a fight.

These are just off the top of my head, there's more. And yes, I was (actually, I still am) an overly-aggressive idiot everyone fears even today, and my body looks like I fell into a giant blender, then got ran over by a bullet train afterwards.

Good thing is, I still have plenty of bones to break, a bunch of body parts I can impale myself on, and doctors say they have enough spare parts for me to keep patching me for years to come.

Problem with my injuries is not the pain, it's my wife that yaps every time I injure myself, I can stand the pain without a problem but her yapping is unbearable. Women drive us men to stop with the stupid, pain-inflicting, bone-breaking, dangerous stuff, and that sucks.

Imagine your list in 20 years time...

I image I'll have quite a few things to add to the list, I'm a sloppy guy that does a lot of crazy things for no good reason other than thinking it would be fun. What can I say, my brain goes bonkers some times, that can't be fixed.

Not like it matters anyway, it's all good as long as my private parts are in one piece and functioning.

Well despite having over 55 operations only one has been from an actual injury. I was riding my bike without proper shoes and wrecked. Broke two of my toes and dislocated one. One of them the bones were down beside one another. Needless to say it was painful. Instead of putting pins in (i was like 11) they actually put my toes up in this wiring and hung weights on the leg to pull them into place. Then they casted my foot really fast and they (the toes) are fine now (well as fine as it can be at 42.)

This was the early 80s and they really didn't believe children felt pain or something. I didn't have any drugs for pain. I remember the nurse saying "think of somewhere nice, think of the beach!" to which I replied, "I've never been to the beach!!" Kinda funny now. *grin*

Werner--I say you win the injury contest. Well done, Immortal. ha ha

When I was 4 years old I decided it would be a good idea to ride my tricycle down the stairs. Went fairly well actually, if it wasn't for the front door being closed at the time. Had to get 3 stiches in my lower lip and chin as a result.

A little over a year ago I was stabbed from behind with a screwdriver in my right shoulder by a would-be car thief who wanted to take my car keys from me in order to take my car.

Had to go to the hospital to have the wound checked, but the screwdriver didn't really hit anything vital, so it just took some bandages to fix that one.

Nothing much else really.

@Werne: Homo Sapiens Invictus. :tongue:

I don't remember how old I was (five, six?) but I jumped from one of those playhouse things or whatever you call them, hoping to land on this tricycle on the bottom (it had a bar that you could fling yourself from). Instead, I hit the ground and landed directly on my arm, almost breaking it. It was the most excruciating thing I had have felt in my life. The pain is still very vivid to me. Because of the pain, I couldn't move my arm for a few days. I had to practice moving it and it was sore for awhile. But that's as close as I ever want to be to breaking an arm. :pinch:

Back in Junior High me and a few friends were visiting my aunt in Kyoto. I dont really remember why it lead to this, but I had to jump a gap between my aunts house and the neighbors house. I slipped when I landed on the other house's awning and broke my leg and seriously injured my left hand.

To this day I still haven't lived it down :pinch:
