Slaiv
I agree - Valve has gone waaaay too overboard. The whole "Steam" idea was a bad one in the first place. Piracy is never going to stop - despite how many laws are made against it, do you see a smaller number of people downloading music today? Plus we all know Valve just made up that hacker story to buy more development time. :shifty:

Zmid
Getting the game via steam was quite painless... After I entered in the payment information, all past works of Valve, including CS Source became avaliable to me, and HL2 started preloading. As soon as 8am GMT rolled along (the game is only released at midnight for those of you on the West coast), I was playing the game after a few minutes, in which the game decrypted itself.<{POST_SNAPBACK}> A-ha, that is the secret - go ninja on them and attack when everyone is asleep. :shifty: ^_^ I'm glad to see that at least they've now sorted it out. Today, I accessed my Steam account first try and immediately got a wee message saying my CD-Key is verified and an option to print out a receipt as proof of purchase. ...And also, for all the people that are so upset about activation, IIRC, there is the option to register via mail You're remembering wrongly. :P Direct quote from a leaflet inside the box:A Steam account is required to play Half-Life 2 and an internet connection is required to create and use your Steam account. During installation you will be prompted to create your Steam account and validate your CD key, once this is complete you can play Half-Life 2. I'm for Valve in their decision.Piracy has reached ridiculous levels lately. It's not really the activation process that pissed me off. It's the fact it seems to have inconvenienced quite a lot of people for very little effect, if what Dark0ne has posted is correct. Cynical *censored* I am, I reckoned it would delay hacked HL2 appearing by a week. That appears to have been wildly optimistic. At the moment i'm on my college system, because on my gaming PC i've got no Net (the shame :bye: ). Does anyone know of any way to get the code without being connected to the Net on the machine you've installed the game to? It's not really a question of getting a code. You have to install the game, connect into a Steam account and enter the CD code you get with it. Steam then verifies the code is good and that unlocks the game. In short, no net connection=no play. Too busy with Everquest 2 to give a damn about HL2 and Valve - who can burn in hell for all I care. Pissed us all about too much and now I've moved on to better (repeat better..i.e EQ2 > HL2) things. I'd be half tempted to do the same - if it weren't for the fact there's no way I can pay for my account time (I don't have, nor want, a credit card and the game time cards are unavailable where I live). I love half-life 1 and 2 but in the uk when is it out????? *checks watch* Now. ^_^
Abramul
including CS SourceCorrect me if I'm wrong, but wasn't Counterstrike a free, independently made mod? (At least for those who already had HL)
Slaiv
Originally, but then Valve decided that they could make money on it [those greedy b*stards] and took advantage of that - they took the mod team under their wing, and released it as an official "expansion." valdir
I've been playing for the past three hours and I can definately say that it's the first game in a long time that's actually just damn fun. My only complaint is the loading. It takes me 3 minutes to go from my desktop into the game. And then there's in "zone" loading, which takes 30 seconds. It may not sound like much, put it can pull you out of the action  However, the game is exceedingly fun. I'm at a part now set in the creepy town of Ravenholm. That part alone beats Doom 3's scariness factor by far. CREEPY :halloween: I haven't had a chance to try out CS:Source yet, but I'm afraid of how long it'll take to load
FlightlessBird
Daaaannnnggg... You guys already got Half-Life 2... I just got War craft 3, and not the expansion... I guess i need to catch up... Anyway i'm thinking about buying the game... in like... A Very long time. I am still a fan of the orignal HL so I think i'll play through that one again. Once I'm done with WC3 of course... And that sercurity measures sound insane. Demoralizing +
Marxist ßastard
Dark0ne:<{POST_SNAPBACK}>...EQ2 > HL2... [...] The game you speak of, Marxist, is Sacred -- and it was ridiculous. Darky, you command a large network and a very large and active forum... That's quite an achievement... ...And that's why it's all the more distressing to me that you have the spiteful and ignorant mind of an eight-year-old boy. I had wondered where those lone "HALFLIFE II SUKCS!!! - 0/10" ratings -- amid that sea of 9.2+ reviews that is the reaction to Half-Life 2 -- had come from, and now I know. Slaiv:<{POST_SNAPBACK}>Plus we all know Valve just made up that hacker story... Oh, yes, everyone knows that, including the German policemen who captured the hacker, who is also the author of several malware applications... Slaiv:<{POST_SNAPBACK}>[They did it] to buy more development time. ...Which is why the hacker struck after the release had been pushed back... My, you have quite a knack for conspiracies... What's next, your declaration that "everybody knows" that the country of Azerbaijan is just an optical illusion created by the Majestic 12 to cover up their secret movie studio, where the moon landing and every major assassination for the last fifty years was filmed? Slaiv:<{POST_SNAPBACK}>[Counter-Strike was originally a free user-created modification], but then Valve decided that they could make money on it (those greedy bastards) and took advantage of that - they took the mod team under their wing, and released it as an official "expansion."Counter-Strike becomes the number one online FPS.Valve, thinking that CS, with the improvements that the Source engine provides, would be more valuable to the community than a Half-Life 2 version of HLDM (which would be easily made by the community as well), buys out the project with the intent of making it into the multiplayer component of Half-Life 2.Valve releases a cheaper retail version of Half-Life without HLDM and the original single-player content, but with Counter-Strike included as default, providing an alternative option for those who don't want to pay for Half-Life's original content or don't want to download Counter-Strike, which was hell for 56k.Valve uses Counter-Strike to test out their Steam system, so that they can perfect it before the release of Half-Life 2. Players who are not comfortable with Steam can still play older versions of the mod through WON.Valve contracts third-party developers to make Condition Zero, a single-player component of Counter-Strike and an expanded multiplayer component, providing more content to Counter-Strike fans.Valve releases Half-Life 2, with the genuinely amazing CS:Source as the multiplayer component. CS:Source is included with all versions of Half-Life 2.Sound about right? Well, now we have this:Slaiv is the only person in the world inteligent enough not to fall for this ploy, and claims that Valve took over Counter-Strike completely and forced players to pay for content that was originally free....Oh, and didn't you have a Halo signature a while ago? I guess the identity of the author of the "HL2 is gr8 but i think HALO i sbetter, just my opinin! - 7/10" reviews has been revealed.
Peregrine
I really wish people would stop whining about steam. It's not that much of an inconvenience, if you aren't pirating the game. If you are, then you get no sympathy from me. Otherwise, who cares if you have to register online? So the servers were a bit overloaded the first day and you didn't get to play at the exact first possible minute. Who cares? It's just a game. If it's that important to you to play immediately, you need to get some help for your addiction. As for the game itself... amazing doesn't even begin to describe it. If only I had the replacement for my melted video card and could play it myself....

Wait..have you played EQ2? No? *Dark0ne stamps a huge "VOID" sign on Marxist's forehead* ... get out of this debate :P I really wish people would stop whining about steam. Same..never had any problems with Steam.
