DGK20
Is it possible to run Skyrim legally without using Steam? Is there a way to not have steam running or am I doomed to have wait for my crappy internet to "update steam" every time I want to play?
Rennn
Steam has to be running to play legally Skyrim, unfortunately. To make it a bit less intrusive, however, you can uncheck the "enable Steam community in game" option, under the game properties in Steam.
Arthmoor
Or if you're one of the lucky few for whom it works (I'm not, sadly) you can tell Steam to switch to offline mode and then just never log it back on. Don't count on this actually helping though because Steam tends to force its way online again seemingly at random.

Hyacathusarullistad
I found refusing Steam access through my firewall worked wonders towards preventing it from getting online again. It would try, the firewall would block it, so it would decide to run in offline mode. I've only let it go back online to check for Skyrim updates, and it doesn't look like there'll ever be any more of those anymore.
