Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War delivers a level of visual detail never before seen in an RTS. Hundreds of units clash on the battlefields of the dark future, unleashing massive destruction through a stunning battery of long-range weaponry before closing in for the finish. Incredible kill animations bring science fiction combat to life like never before, and the gritty future-gothic Warhammer 40,000 setting provides a striking tableau for the chaos and carnage of this grim, dark future, where there is only war!

It's a great game, but the online community is small outside of the US so there's a fair bit of waiting around if you want to play a 2x2 automatch or something like that. Don't even think about playing 3x3 autos unless you've already lined up the people. I've heard rumours that there's folks that died waiting to join an automatched 4x4.

But as a game it is absolutely brilliant. A lot more fun than Warcraft 3, even if it does have a few balance issues and uses gamespy for multiplayer.

This topic fell so far down that somebody started their own. I'm officially reviving it.

My thoughts on DoW.

To be honest I was highly disappointed. Most notably, all the weapons are far too weak. In the tabletop game a landraider can be wrecked with one clean hit from a lascannon. In DoW it takes 8-10 shots. Likewise troops stand and fire at one another for far too long before they start dying.

Also it has a terrible draw distance if you look at the view sideways, and they completely failed to include the tyranids. they forgot several other races too, but all the major races except the Tyranids are being added in th DC expansion.

They also missed tons of units for existing sides. The chaos gods for example. In tabletop there are 4 chaos gods, each with their own greater demon, lesser demon groups, champion, and unique unit (khorne berzerkers for example.

In DoW they used the Greater Daemon and unique unit from Khorne, the Champion from Nurgle and the lesser demons from Tzeentch. They included no hint at all of Slaanesh.

Relic also failed to include many of the eldar aspect warriors. The Swooping Hawks, Striking Scorpions, Dire Avengers and Fire Dragons were missing. They did add the fire dragons in WA expansion though.

The next expansion looks mostly rather brilliant, although they are not adding any new chaos units or aspect warriors. Instead, chaos' "new" unit will be the daemon prince. Except that the daemon prince is not new at all. It was in DoW originally but simply not playable. I find this cheap and insulting, and if it wasn't for the Necrons in the expansion, I would not be buying it.

But the necrons will be there, and seem to be faithfully reproduced (although pariahs and the Deciever are notably absent from preview videos) and so I will be buying Dark Crusade.

Sorry for the rant. I just feel strongly that Dawn of War lets warhammer fans down considerably, though it's still far better than anything that has come before.

DoW rocks, in every way. :D

except sometimes I feel like the mechs are overpowered.

the melee could be better

and my favourite part is the army painter.

Just played the demo for the second expansion: Dark Crusade. The Tau were very cool, though not too sure if i'd actually choose them that often. I have a friend that will go nuts over them though. I can't wait to try the Necron. As an only slight fan of the tabletop (never had the money to do more then watch) and a decent fan of the literature (books and such) I think they have done a good job bringing the feel to the PC.

I'm a bit confused though with the demo for Dark Crusade. It has been stated multiple times that there will not be any new units for the old races... but at the end of the demo it had an advertisement slideshow. The last frame's text stated "Five new units, one for each of the original races" or something to that effect. Also in the demo I swear I saw a new vehicle for the Space Marines (and boy was it a pain). I really hope they do add new units to each of the original races.

Oh and if anyone ever wants to play a match (prefer co-op), feel free to send me a PM.

There will indeed be 5 'new' units. 1 for each faction.

SM: Grey Knights. Super space marines that are designed to fight demons. they have turbo speed and are actually pretty cool.

Orks: Flash gitz. Ranged specialists that have lots of good weapons but are vulnerable up close.

Eldar: Harlequin. Even though there are many core eldar units still missing, they chose to add the harlequin. Except that in 40k the harlequins have several different types of units and are almost a seperate race in themselves. Nevertheless the harlequin looks incredible in combat.

Chaos: Daemon Prince. Now this really pisses me off. The deom prince was in the original DoW, but not playable. All they've done is add in the ability to build him and alter a few stats. Given that chaos is missing more of it's units than any other faction, the arrogance of this astounds me, and is almost (but not quite) enough to make me boycott DC out of rage.

Imperial Guard: Heavy Weapon teams. Another vulk up by relic. Heavy weapon teams were supposed to be in winter assault, and the IG have sucked ass as a result. This will finally fix them, but we shouldn't have to pay for something that belongs in a free patch.

Cool, thanks for finding that for me (I couldn't find that if my life depended on it and oh how I tried). Yeah I did noticed that they are missing a TON of eldar and chaos units. You have to remember though that since it is a strategy game, they need a sense of balance. They can't add in everything since the stats will have to be different then the tabletop. Thus they have certain "this team needs this kind of a unit" spots they have to fill. Thus you have to keep in mind that adding a new unit to a team you've already balanced is INCREDIBLY hard. If you are not careful you could ruin the entire MP/skirmish game. Oh and while I am overjoyed to hear the IG is getting a Heavy Weapons Team, they do not suck without them. I have beaten MOST (not all, but most) people playing as the IG. :)
